BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's soccer team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 3-1, tonight (Oct. 28) at the George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
With the win, B-W improves to 7-10-1 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. Heidelberg drops to 1-16 overall and 0-8 in the OAC.
Senior midfielder Katie Johnson (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) opened up the scoring quickly for the Jackets when she scored her second goal of the season in the fifth minute. In the second half, sophomore forward Emily Roll (Dover) added her fifth goal of the year at the 57:58 mark, which proved to be the game winner. Senior midfielder Emily Panek (North Olmsted) added an insurance goal, her second of the year, in the 87th minute to make the score 3-0 with only a few minutes to go in the contest. Heidelberg broke the shutout with less than a minute remaining.
In goal, senior two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Goalie of the Year, Amanda Avram (Kirtland/ Villa Angela - St. Joseph), who was honored before the game (see story below), faced one shot, recorded one save and allowed no goals in 63 minutes of action. Freshman Emily Leonard (Stow) played the remainder of the game allowing the lone goal.
The Yellow Jackets will conclude their season on Saturday, November 1st when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 1:00. It will be Seniors' Day at the stadium.

BEREA, OHIO -- When current senior goalie Amanda Avram (Kirtland/ Villa Angela - St. Joseph High School) stepped on the Baldwin-Wallace College campus four years ago, she was deemed by both former soccer coach Kelli Gray and current women's athletic director and basketball coach Cheri Harrer as a special person. Tonight (October 28, 2003), Avram is being honored as B-W's all-time saves leader as a goalie prior to the Yellow Jackets 7:00 p.m. start against Heidelberg College at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
"Amanda is an outstanding young women in many, many ways," said Harrer, who had the opportunity to coach Amanda on the basketball court as a freshman. "Amanda exemplifies the term student-athlete. She is an outstanding student, a great soccer player and very imvolved on our campus. She is a leader in every way, sharpe and form. We have been blessed to have Amanda as a member of our campus community."
As a soccer player, Avram is a three-time All-OAC player and the OAC's two-time Goalie of the Year award winner. She has also been B-W's Most Valuable Player all three years. In addition, three times during her career, Avram has been tabbed as an OAC Player of the Week. As a freshman, Amanda also played basketball and was a member of a team that advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament round of the "Elite Eight".
