Baldwin-Wallace Grapplers Finish Third at 24th Annual Summa Tourney in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team finished third of five teams at the 24th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse today (Saturday, February 6, 2010).  Two  Yellow Jackets won individual titles and three B-W grapplers placed second.

Brockport State (N.Y.) won the team title for the 14th straight year with a total of 167.50 points. Waynesburg (Pa.) University placed second with 139.50 points, host B-W was third with 134, Thiel (Pa.) College was fourth with 54 and Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology was fifth with 35.50 points. Waynesburg’s 125-pounder Alex Crown was the 2010 John Summa Most Valuable Wrestler, B-W junior 125-pounder Tyler Erwin (Westerville/ Watkins Memorial) had the Fastest Pin in 36 seconds and won the award for the Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time with two in 2:37. The only 2009 champion to defed a title this year was Brockport’s James Forsyth, who won the title at 149 pounds a year ago and won the 165-pound crown in 2010.

Leading the way for B-W was junior 174-pounder Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge), a 2009 Ohio Athletic Conference champion and NCAA Division III national qualifier, and junior 197-pounder Tristan Stoll (Milan/ Edison), who both won individual titles. In addition, junior 133-pounder Phil Payne (Orange Village/ Orange), senior 141-pounder Eric Schubert (Oberlin) and junior 157-pounder Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/ Pymatuning Valley) each placed second, sophomore 149-pounder Grant Steward (Columbus/ Worthington Kilbourne) and junior 184-pounder Cody Quick (Mount Vernon) each placed third and Tyler Erwin and junior 285-pounder Ryan Jones (Uniontown/ Lake) each placed fourth.

Scavuzzo, who finished with a 3-0 record and improved to 14-4 this season, won his title by defeating Clay Neivert of Brockport State, 4-2 in overtime. A year ago, he placed second at the Summa. Stoll was 2-0 today, improved to 16-3 overall, and won his title by pinning Brockport’s Tom Voorhis in 1:13.

The Yellow Jacket wrestlers will be back in action on Tuessday, February 9 when they host OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.  It is Seniors’ Night in Berea and prior to the match, Eric Schubert will be recognized for his four-year committment to the program.

Following the JCU match, B-W is idle until Saturday, February 20 when it travels to Alliance, Ohio to participate in the 2010 OAC Championship Tournament at Mount Union College in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex. Wrestling begins at 10:00 a.m.
