Selover Takes Home Fourth Place and All-American Honors at the NCAA Wrestling Tournament

BEREA, OHIO - Baldwin-Wallace College freshman 125-pound wrestler Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) earned NCAA Division III All-American honors as he placed fourth individually at the National Championship Tournament this weekend at Ohio Northern University in Ada.

Selover, who lost his opening match to fourth-seeded Greg Brendemuehl of Augsburg (Minn.) College, 2-1, came back to win three consecutive matches to earn All-American honors. The top eight in each of the 10 weights earn Division III All-American honors.  On Friday evening, Selover defeated sixth-seeded Terry Morgan of Loras College of Iowa, 9-3, in his first consolation bracket match.

Today, Saturday March 8, Selover defeated #8-seed Nick Kehagias (Univ.of Chicago), 9-4, then he pinned Brendemuehl in a rematch of their opening round match at the 6:16 mark. Selover's day ended when he was pinned by #5-seeded Tom Prairie (Williams College) in 2:55 in the third place match.

Selover, now 35-8 overall, won four tournament titles this winter, including last weekend's Ohio Athletic Conference 125-pound title and the OAC John Summa Most Valuable Wrestler Award. Selover was the first freshman in OAC history to do it. In addition, his 33 wins rank first on the Yellow Jacket squad. He is also just one of his wrestlers in B-W history to have 30 or more wins in a season.

Hartlaub Eliminated from NCAA's

Baldwin-Wallace College senior 285-pound wrestler Greg Hartlaub and resident and graduate of Avon Lake High School, lost a pair of matches today and was eliminated at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament at Ohio Northern University in Ada.

Hartlaub lost his first match to the number five-seed, Pat Thomas of Loras (Iowa) College, when he was pinned in 1:55 of the first period. The score was 0-0 when Thomas caught Hartlaub with a move, gained leverage, took him to the mats and earned the quick pin. In his second match, Hartlaub battled Jim Rennise of SUNY-Brockport (N.Y.), but lost, 6-3.

Hartlaub, the Ohio Athletic Conference champion at 285 pounds, ends his second with a 23-7 record and .767 winning percentage.

Unfortunate Injury Ends Shelby High Grad Joe Heiland's Season at the NCAA Division III National Tourney at Ohio Northern

Baldwin-Wallace College junior Joe Heiland, a graduate of Shelby High School, ended his season today at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament at Ohio Northern University early into his first match.

Heiland injured his ankle in the first 10 seconds of his first round match against fifth-seeded Ryan Strum of Wartburg (Iowa) College and had to medically default. Due to the injury, Heiland had to forfeit his second match and end his season with a 32-7 record and .821 winning percentage.

"We are extremely sad for Joe," said Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach. "He had such a great year and to have this happen at the national tournament has to be disheartenening. We really feel for Joe and his family.

"There were also a lot of people here in Ada to see Joe wrestle, and we appreciate all of their support," said Fleming. "Joe is a tough young man who will come back from the injury and be a stronger person and wrestler. We are proud of all that Joe was able to accomplish this season."

With his 32 wins, Heiland ranked second to freshman All-American 125-pounder Jared Selover of Wapakoneta H.S. He is also the sixth Yellow Jacket in school history to have 30 or more wins in a season.
