Wrestling National Tourney at St. Olaf (Minn.)
BEREA, OHIO — Baldwin-Wallace College junior 197-pounder Devin Carman (Ashtabula/ Geneva) earned All-American honors and placed eighth at the 2005 NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships at St. Olaf (Minn.) College. Senior 165-pounder Joe Heiland (Shelby) also competed and went 1-2 on the weekend.
Carman, the Ohio Athletic Conference champ at 197 pounds, lost in his first match to top-seeded Akeem Carter of Wartburg (Iowa), 9-3. He then defeated Thomas Sanders of local Case Western Reserve University, 11-0 and seventh-seeded Silver Oghayore of Norwich, 6-4. Carman was pinned by fifth-seeded Justin Sorensen of Augsburg, in 2:59. He took on eighth-seeded Mike McCabe of Coe and lost 3-2 to place eighth. Carman ends his season with a 26-5 record and his career mark now stands at 60-15.
Heiland, a two-time OAC champ at 165 pounds who made his second appearance at the national tourney, lost his first match to second-seeded Nick Ammerman of the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse, 7-3. He won against seventh-seeded Cole Williams of Dubuque, 6-3, in the consolation bracket. He then lost to John Dolan of Williams, 4-3. Heiland ended this season with a 14-8 overall and had a 76-26 career mark.
