Baldwin-Wallace Finishes Third of Seven Teams at the Annual John Summa Tournament
BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team placed third at the annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The Yellow Jackets scored 86.00 points, had one individual champion and five place winners. Click here for complete tournament results.
Freshman 125-pounder Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) defeated Rob Regner (Thiel), 7-1 to take first place. Selover had two technical falls earlier in the day, one over Shawn Julock (Thiel-2) in the quarter-finals and the other over Joe Suchowolec (Olivet) in the semi-finals.
Junior 133-pounder Jeff Varney (Chagrin Falls) and junior 165-pounder Joe Heiland (Shelby) both placed second. Heiland had a major decision over Chad Kaiser (Olivet), 14-5, and defeated Brad Statzer (Wilmington), 5-3, in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. Heiland was defeated in the finals match by Artie Wielder (Brockport), 6-4 in OT. Varney pinned Dan Garcia (Wilmington) in 24 seconds and defeated Kevin DeJulius (Washington & Jefferson), 5-2, before losing to Dan Roberts (Brockport) in the finals match, 4-1.
Freshman 197-pounder Devin Carman (Ashtabula/Geneva) placed third by pinning Ahmed Zeaiter (Olivet), in 1:17.
Freshmen 125-pounder Mike Ham (Concord/Notre Dame-Cathederal Latin) and Corey Wilson (Zanesville/Maysville) were also place winners for the Yellow Jackets. Ham placed fourth after losing to Mike Olem (Waynesburg), by fall in 5:21. Wilson took sixth after having a medical default in the finals.
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action Tuesday, February 11th, when they travel to Alliance to take on OAC-rival Mount Union. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
