John Summa Memorial Tournament
BEREA, OHIO -- Junior 174-pounder Jeremy Feador (North Olmsted) won an individual title, was the Most Valuable Wrestler and won the Most Pins Award as the Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team placed second of 10 schools today (Saturday, February 3, 2007) at the 21st Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in the Lou Higgins Fieldhouse in Berea.
The Yellow Jackets scored 117 points and placed second to Brockport State (N.Y.) College which won an 11th straight Summa tourney title with 129 points. Thiel College of Pennsylvania was third with 107.5 points.
Feador won all three of his matches by pin en route to being the John Summa Most Valuable Wrestler. He pinned Igor Babuskin of Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) in his first match in 1:55, then pinned Bryan Gomez of Morrisville State (N.Y.) College in 1:46 and ended his "pin-fest" by pancaking Eric Van Patten of Brockport State in 1:46. The trio of pins also earned Feador the Most Pins Award. He is now 18-8 this season with a team-best 10 pins.
In addition to Feador, sophomore 197-pounder Paul Burger (Mentor) and senior 285-pounder Bryan Kmetz (Brunswick) both won individual titles, senior 133-pounder Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) was second, sophomore 133-pounder Brian Bucher (Avon Lake), sophomore 149-pounder Mo Salem (Westlake) and junior 184-pounder Antonio Campea (Hinckley/ Parma Padua) all placed third and junior 184-pounder Bryan Haines (Amanda/ Teays Valley) placed fourth.
Burger won his title with a 3-0 record and had a pin, a major decision and another decision. He pinned Mike Tees of Tri-State (Ind.) in his first match in 2:22, beat Rob Northrup of Brockport State in the semifinals, 9-4, and then defeated Brockport's Steve Spiegeliere, 11-2, in the championship match. Burger is now 5-1 this season.
Kmetz had a 4-0 record with a pair of pins and a pair of decisions. In his first two matches, he pinned Melvin Warrick of Waynesburg (Pa.) College in 1:13 and then flatened Justin Talkington of Tri-State in 42 seconds before beating Micah Vore of RIT, 9-6, in the semifinals. In the championship match, he defeated Kyle Brown from Thiel (Pa.), 7-4. It is the second time this season that Kmetz beat Brown. Kmetz remained undefeated this season at 12-0 with seven pins.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 6 when they host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College on Seniors' Day in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of The Lou Higgins Center at 7:30 p.m. B-W will take an 11-10 and 3-2 OAC dual match mark into their finbal dual match of the season. The 2007 OAC Championship Tournament is Saturday, Feb. 17 at Heidelberg College and begins at 10:00 a.m.
