Summa Memorial Tournament in Berea
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team finished fourth of nine schools at the 2004 and 18th Annual John Summa Memorial Tournament in Berea today (Feb. 7, 2004).
The Yellow Jackets totalled 73.5 points and had two champions, a second place finisher and a fourth place finisher. Brockport State (N.Y.) had 169.5 points and won the team title for the eighth straight year and entered the tourney ranked sixth in Division III. Olivet College of Michigan, ranked 29th in Div. III, was second with 111.5 points and Thiel (Pa.) College was third with 75.5 points.
Individually for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore 184-pounder Sterling Sebek (Columbus, Georgia/ Brookstone) and sophomore 285-pounder Bryan Kmetz (Brunswick) each won individual titles, senior 141-pounder Sayre Wuhr (Hudson) placed second and sophomore All-American and 133-pounder Jared Selover (Wapakoneta) was fourth.
Sebek had a 3-0 record and defeated Nate Santelli of Thiel (Pa.) in the title match, 8-2. Kmetz was also 3-0 and beat Arnold Frost (Brockport State), 8-2, in the title match. Wuhr, this week's Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time in the past three weeks, lost in the championship match to Dan Roberts of Brockport State, 6-2. The loss ended a 14-match winning streak. Selover was 2-2 at 133 pounds to place fourth.
In terms of individual awards, Sebek was named as the John Summa Most Outstanding Wrestler. Olivet 285-pounder Charlie Walker won both the Fastest Pin Award and the Most Pins Award in the Fastest Time as he pinned teammate James Tanis in 13 seconds to win the Fastest Pin Award and had three total pins in 10:19 to win the Most Pins in the Fastest Time Award.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Tuesday when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to wrestle Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College at the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. B-W will enter that match at 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the OAC and tied with Heidelberg and John Carroll University for second place in the OAC.
