BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team lost all three matches at the annual B-W Quad Tournament today (Saturday, November 7, 2009) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center. This was the season-opener for the Yellow Jackets.
B-W lost to the College of Mount St. Joseph, 24-19, to Lycoming (Pa.) College, 29-15, and to Thiel (Pa.) College, 25-12.
For the Yellow Jackets, junior 174-pound defending Ohio Athletic Conference champ and 2009 NCAA Division III national qualifier Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge) and sophomore 285-pounder Ryan Jones (Uniontown/ Lake) led the way by each finishing 3-0 and junior 133-pounder Phillip Payne (Orange Village/ Orange) and 157-pounder Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/ Pymatuning Valley) each were 2-1.
In the first match versus MSJ, B-W winners were Payne by pin, Leonard and Scavuzzo each by decision and Jones by forfeit. In addition, both freshman 133-pounder Danny Huffman (Maple Heights) and sophomore 157-pounder Tim Levitsy (Parma/ Senior) each won by pin in exhibition matches.
In the loss to Lycoming, Payne, Leonhard and Scavuzzo all won by decision and Jones pinned his opponent. In exhibition matches, both Huffman and Levitsky again pinned their opponents.
In the defeat to Thiel, sophomore 125-pounder Jeremy Dombrady (Copley) won by decision, senior 141-pounder Eric Schubert (Oberlin) won in overtime, Scavuzzo won his third straight decision and Jones completed a perfect day by winning by decision. In exhibition matches, Huffman won by pin, his third straight, and Levitsky and sophomore 165-pounder Mike Hosta (Hickley/ Medina Highland) each lost by decision.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Saturday, November 14 when they host Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
