BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team lost to Springfield (Mass.) College, 20-17, in its first match today (Saturday, January 12, 2008) during the second day of the Lycoming (Pa.) College Budd Whitehill Duals in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets, now 5-14-1 overall, will wrestle St. John's (Minn.) University in a consolation match at Lycoming.
Despite the loss for the Yellow Jackets, freshman 125-pounder Tyler Erwin (Granville/Watkins Memorial) won by decision, 11-8; senior 165-pounder All-American Gino Russo (Northfield Center/Macedonia Nordonia) won by major decision, 14-5; senior 174-pounder Jeremy Feador (North Olmsted) pinned his opponent in 2:48; and senior 1797-pounder Brian Haines (Amanda/Teays Valley) won by major decision, 10-0.
With his victory at 165 pounds, Russo, ranked second in the latest NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) poll at his weight class, improved to a perfect 21-0 overall. A year ago, Russo placed sixth at the NCAA Division III National Tournament and was the Ohio Athletic Conference 165-pound champion. Erwin's win improved his seasonal mark to 6-17, Feador improved to 11-8 and Haines improved to 6-2.
Following its second match today at 1:30 p.m., B-W will return to Berea to host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College in a home OAC dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
