BEREA, OHIO--  The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team had a perfect 2-0-1 record at the season-opening Yellow Jacket Quad Meet in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea today (November 10, 2007).

The Yellow Jackets defeated Waynesburg (Pa.) College, 48-6, and Case Western Reserve University, 35-7.  B-W's match against The College of Mount St. Joseph ended in a 21-21 tie.

Individually, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior NCAA Division III All-Amrican 165-pounder Gino Russo (Northfield Center/ Macedonia Nordonia) who had a 3-0 record.  In addition, freshman 125-pounder Tyler Erwin (Granville/ Watkins Memorial) also had a 3-0 record without every having to grapple as he received three straight forfeits. Also, freshman 157-pounder Korey Leonhard (Kinsman/ Pymatuning Valley), senior 174-pounder Jeremy Feador (North Olmsted) and senior 184-pounder Brian Haines (Amanda/ Teays Valley) all had 2-0 slates. Overall, B-W had a 24-9 individual record and a .727 winning percentage for the day.

"I thought we wrestled pretty well for the first day," said veteran Yellow Jacket Head Coach Rich Fleming. "We got excellent effort from a number of people. Obviously Gino is our team leader and we rely on him to wrestle well, and he did."

In the first match of the day against MSJ, the Jackets' recorded victories by Erwin at 125 pounds, junior Mohamed Salem (Westlake) at 149, Russo at 165, Feador at 174 and Haines at 184.  

In its victory against Waynesburg, Erwin won at 125, freshman Phillip Payne (Woodmere/ Orange) at 133, sophomore Eric Schubert (Oberlin/ Senior) at 141, senior Scott Haber (Brook Park/ Parma Normandy) at 149, Leonhard at 157, Russo at 165, Feador at 174, Haines at 184 and freshman Andrew Scavazzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge) at 197.

Against CWRU, Erwin won by forfeit for third time at 125, junior Brian Bucher (Ottawa Hills/ Avon Lake) won at 133, junior Joe Incorvaia (Medina/ Highland) at 157, Russo at 165, senior Antonio Campea (Hinckley/ Parma Padua) at 174, Scavazzo at 184, senior Bryan Gulich (Richmond Heights) at 197 and freshman Tim Jacobsson (Fuchu-Shi, Japan/ The American School) at 285.

The Yellow Jacket wrestlers will be back in action on Saturday, November 17 when they travel to Olivet, Michigan to compete at the Olivet College Duals. Action begins at 8:30 a.m. The Olivet College Web site at www.olivetcollege.edu already has a schedule posted for the event.
