B-W Wrestlers Lose to Centenary (N.J.) in First Match at Wilkes (Pa.) University Duals
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team lost to Centenary (N.J.) College, 25-11, in its first match today (Thursday, January 3, 2007) at the Wilkes University Duals in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets, now 4-8-1 overall, will wrestle twice more at Wilkes.
Despite the loss for the Yellow Jackets, junior 133-pounder Brian Bucher (Ottawa/ Avon Lake) won won by decision, 5-4; senior 165-pound All-American Gino Russo (Northfield Center/ Macedonia Nordonia) won by technical fall, 20-5; and freshman 184-pounder Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge) won by decision, 3-1.
With his victory at 165 pounds, Russo, ranked second in the latest NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association) poll at his weight class, improved to a perfect 14-0 overall. A year ago, Russo placed sixth at the NCAA Division III National Tournament and was the Ohio Athletic Conference 165-pound champion. Bucher’s win improved his seasonal mark to 10-4 and Scavuzzo is now 10-6 overall, including a 6-6 slate at 184 pounds.
Following its last two matches at Wilkes, the Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, January 8 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to face fourth-ranked Heidelberg College in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
