Brockport State (N.Y.) Wins its Ninth Straight Summa Tournament Title, B-W is

Third and Kmetz Wins Summa Most Valuable Award

BEREA, OHIO —  Brockport State (N.Y.) College won the 19th Annual Baldwin-Wallace College John Summa Wrestling Tournament today (Saturday, February 5, 2005) in the B-W Recreation Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio.

The title by SUNY/ Brockport was its ninth straight Summa title. Host B-W finished third of seven school and junior 285-pounder Bryan Kmetz (Brunswick) highlighted the event for B-W by winning an individual title and the John Summa Most valuable Wrestler Award. In addition, B-W had two other grapplers, junior 197-pounder Devin Carman (Ashtabula/ Geneva) and junior 133-pounder Chris Harrold (Willoughby/ South) advance to the championship match at their respective weight class.

Brockport had four champions and advanced six wrestlers to the championship round. Second place Olivet (Mich.) College had a pair of champions. The Fastest Pin Award was won by Greg Hudie of Olivet, and Brandon Clark of Brockport State College earned the Most Pins Award with three.

Kmetz won both of his matches in the tourney as beat Duncan Ianucci of Brockport State, 5-2, and then defeated fifth-ranked Patrick Bennett of Brockport State in the finals, 9-3. With his two wins, Kmetz is now 17-4 overall.

Carman, who is currently ranked seventh in Division III in the latest Adidas-Brute National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, split a pair of matches to finish second and is now 21-3 overall. He received a first round bye, won his semifinal match due to a medical default early in the first period and then lost in the championship match, 8-4, to Brockport's sixth-ranked Will Weiss. Harrold won twice to advance to the championship round before being pinned.

B-W next wrestles on Tuesday, Feb. 8 when it hosts OAC-rival Heidelberg College in an OAC dual match in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.
