Baldwin-Wallace is 10th at RIT Tourney, Junior 197-Pounder Devin Carman Wins

His Second Straight Individual Title at RIT

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College wrestling team, led by junior 197-pounder Devin Carman (Ashtabuula/ Geneva High School), finished 10th of 16 teams at the annual Rochester (N.Y.) Institute of Technology Tournament on December 4. Carman won his second straight individual title at RIT with a 4-0 record.

At RIT, Carman won the title and had a 4-0 record to improve his seasonal mark to 10-1 overall (.909 winning percentage) and his career slate to 44-11 (an .800 winning percentage). In his first match, Carman defeated D.J. Bross from Thiel College of Pennsylvania, 12-4. He then won a 7-2 decision over John Francis of John Carroll University in his second match and beat Thomas Sanders of Case Western Reserve University, 4-0, in his third match. In the championship match, Carman beat third-seeded Brandon Kelly of Wilkes (Pa.) College, 5-2. The individual title at RIT was Carman's second straight. He also won a crown a year ago with a 5-0 record and lost in the championship match as a freshman and had a 4-1 record.

In addition to Carman, junior 285-pounder Bryan Kmetz (Brunswick) placed fifth with a 4-2 mark, junior Steve Vaughn (Parma/ Normandy) was 4-2 at 157 pounds and junior 174-pounder T. Terry (Bedford (St. Peter Chanel) was 3-2.

After three weeks of competition, Kmetz tops the team in victories with 12 wins and is 12-3 overall with an .800 winning percentage. Carman and his 10 wins rank second and his .909 winning percentage leads the squad. In addition, freshman 157-pounder Gino Russo (Northfield Center/ Nordonia) and Terry are tied for third with seven wins each. Russo is 7-4 with a .636 winning percentage and Terry is 7-7 overall. Vaughan, who is 4-3 at 157 pounds, is 5-3 overall with a .625 winning percentage.

The Yellow Jacket grapplers are now idle until January 8 when they travel to Ithaca, New York to face Ithaca College and Montclair State (N.J.) in a tri-match. Then, in consecutive weeks, B-W will compete at the Division III National Dual Match Championships at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on January 15 and at the NCAA National Dual Match Championships at Cleveland State University on November 21-22.
