BEREA, OHIO -- Four Baldwin-Wallace Colege fall sport teams will begin action this weekend and another will test its luck in a scrimmage game aginast formidable opposition
The Yellow Jacket volleyball team, 27-7 overall a year ago, travels to Cincinnati to participate in the eight-team Mt. St. Joseph Tournament. B-W, ranked 21st nationally in 2002, returns five starters, including four All-Ohio Athletic Conference players. It will open pool play against OAC arch-rival and ninth-ranked Ohio Northern University on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and then play Thomas More (Ky.) College at 7:30 p.m. The Jackets' conclude pool play on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. versus Savannah School of Art and Design (Ga.). The consolation and championship rounds are at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. The B-W women's and men's socer teams begin play on Saturday and Sunday at the Penn State-Behrend College Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. The women play traditional rival Hiram College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m., and the men play the Terriers at 4:00 p.m. The consolation matches are Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. and the championship matches are at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. For more information about the men's soccer team, please click here.
The Yellow Jacket women both seek to improve on last year's 9-8-3 overall mark and challenge for an OAC title in 2003. The B-W men were 5-12-2 under first-year Head Coach Reid Ayers in 2002. With both a solid veteran corps returning and an outstanding group of newcomers in camp, Ayers expects both his men's and women's teams to be much stronger this fall. The women's golf team will open its 2003-04 schedule at the annual Grand Valley State (Mich.) University Tournament on Monday (Labor Day) and Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets were third at the 2003 OAC Tournament under first-year coach Jim Meyer. Now in his second year, Meyer returns a solid veteran cast and arguably B-W's best-ever recruiting class. The B-W football team officially kicks off its schedule on September 6 when it hosts Allegheny (Pa.) College. This weekend, the Yellow Jackets, 8-2 overall in 2002 and ranked anywhere from third to 15th in five Division III preseason polls, travel to the College of Wooster for its annual scrimmage game at 1:00 p.m. That contest should prove interesting as Wooster is also highly regarded.
