SEASON PREVIEW: 2010-11 Baldwin-Wallace College Women's Golf

Brooke Hamilton

BEREA, OHIO – With its entire roster returning from a year ago, and a talented group of newcomers, the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s golf team enters the 2010 season looking to improve on last spring’s sixth-place finish at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets will be under the direction of first-year Head Coach Wayne Schneider.

Schneider returns a nice mix of veterans and talented youngsters. Last season, four of B-W’s five golfers at the OAC Tournament were freshmen.

Expected to lead the way are sophomores Brooke Hamilton (Cleveland/St. Joseph Academy) and Rebecca Kapusta (Independence).

Hamilton led B-W in the fall of 2009 with a 91.56 stroke average per round and shot a season-best 85 in the first round of the B-W Yellow Jacket Invitational. During the spring season, Hamilton averaged 96.56 per round, good for second on the team. Her best round of the spring was an 89 in round two of the OAC Tournament as she finished tied for 17th (97+89=186) individually.

Kapusta averaged 97.11 per round in the fall of 2009 and shot a season-best 93 in the first round of the Gannon (Pa.) Fall Invitational.  During the spring, Kapusta averaged a team-best 95.56 strokes per round with a best round of 85 during the second day of the OAC Tournament. Kapusta was B-W’s top scorer at the Championships, placing 14th (94+85=179) overall.

Schneider also will count on the experience of his two returning seniors, Nicole Carlone (Canton/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Sam Migalski (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional).

Carlone, a three-year letterwinner and B-W’s captain last year, had her best season as a collegian last fall as she averaged 100.89 per round. She also carded a career-best 91 on the second day of the Yellow Jacket Invitiational. In the spring, Carlone averaged 105.29 strokes per round and finished tied for 27th as an individual at the OAC Tournament (96+107=203). Carlone’s 96 in round one at the OAC Tournament was a season-best.

Migalski, a two-year letterwinner, played seven rounds of golf in the fall of 2009 and averaged 105.00 strokes per round. Her best round of 2009, a 96, came on the second day of the Yellow Jacket Invitational. In the spring, Migalski recorded a stroke average of 107.14. Her best round came at the Mount Union Spring Invite, where she posted a score of 101 on the first day. Included in that round was a hole-in-one on the par-3, 129-yard 15th-hole at Tannenhauf G.C. in Alliance. She also has a career-low 88 to her credit that she shot as a freshman during the spring season at the Wilmington College Invite.

Also back for the Yellow Jackets are sophomores Sarah Terrill (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and Emily Eighmy (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and junior Caci Lewandowski (Sharon Center/Medina Highland).

Terrill competed in three fall tournaments posting a stroke average of 110.33. In the spring, she played in all five tournaments and averaged 110.22 per round. Terrill’s best round of the year came at the Mount Union Spring Invite where she shot a 99 on the first day. She placed 28th (100+101=201) at the OAC Tournament.

Eighmy played in every round last season, averaging 107.33 strokes in the fall and 112.78 in the spring. Her best round of the year came on day one at the OAC Championships, where she shot a 99. At the OAC Tournament, Eighmy finished tied for 31st (99+105=204).

Lewandowski averaged 107.33 in the fall of 2009, shooting a season-best 100 on the second day of the Yellow Jacket Invitational. She missed most of the spring campaign. Her career-best of 96 came as a freshman during the fall season.

Schneider also welcomes a recruiting class of six freshmen golfers, including Sarah Allred (Akron/Green), Mary Crisafio (Pittsburgh, Pa./The Linsly School), Miranda Cunningham (Dayton/Christian), Rebecca Jones (Hilliard/Darby), Miranda Rockich (Akron/Green) and Emilee Woolf (Ravenna/Senior).

B-W opens the 2010 fall season by hosting the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Sweetbriar Golf Club in Avon on September 11-12. The fall schedule features five tournaments and the spring schedule is tentatively scheduled for five as well. The 2011 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament is scheduled for April 16-17 at Tannenhauf Golf Club in Alliance.
