The Yellow Jacket women are coming off of the two best tournament showings this spring in the past two weeks when they placed second at the seven-team ONU Lady Polar Bear Invitational Tournament on April 8 in Ada, and last weekend, the B-W women won the nine-team Mt. Union Invitational at the Pleasant View Golf Course in Paris, Ohio.
At the Mt. Union tourney, the Yellow Jackets carded a two-day, 36-hole team total of 690 (349-341) strokes placing them ahead of OAC rival Otterbein by one stroke. Individually for the Yellow Jackets, freshman Kylee Ehinger (Roanoke, Ind./Bishop Luers) led the way by carding a two-day total of 167 strokes, including a season and team-low 81 on the second day. Following Ehinger, were fellow freshmen Tara Wetherelt (Stockton, Calif./ Franklin) with a two-day total of 172 (86-86) strokes and Sarah Hacker (New Albany, Ind/Our Lady of Providence) with 175 (88-87) strokes on the par 72, 5,800-yard layout. In addition, sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference players Lauren Buckner (Westlake) and Emily Scheetz (Canton/ Perry) had totals of 176 (99-87) and 182 (91-91), respectively to round out the top five B-W players.
After four tournaments and seven rounds of 18 holes this spring, Wetherelt tops the squad in stroke average at 88.8 strokes per 18 holes. Ehinger and Buckner are tied for second at 93.57 strokes. Scheetz is fourth at 94.71 and is followed by Hacker at 95.14 and freshman Kelly Gallaway (Ashland Senior) at 97.25 strokes. Other team members include seniors Lindsay Light (Ft. Wayne, Ind./ Concordia Lutheran) and Karissa Kusick (Chicora, Pa./ Karns City) and junior Sarah Todd (Seneca, Pa./ Cranberry).
"We have been constantly improving all spring, and the way we played at both ONU and Mt. Union proves it," said second-year Head Coach Jim Meyer. "Our tournament should offer another excellent challenge for our young team. All year, we have battled with Otterbein and Wilmington. This tournament is also just a week before the OAC Championships. It should be fun to watch our kids grow some more.
We are excited to play Pine Hills," said Meyer. "It offers an excellent challenge for all styles of golfer. It is a public course that reminds many of a country club."
The 2004 Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 29-30 at the Little Turtle Country Club in Greater Columbus.
