The 12th-Ranked Baldwin Wallace Women's Basketball Team Beats John

Carroll, 81-53, to Remain Unbeaten in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) scored a team-high 16 points as the 12th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 81-53, tonight (Jan. 11) in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.  BW's victory was its 28th straight against the Blue Streaks dating back to the 1990-91 season.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 12-2 overall and is the only unbeaten OAC team with a perfect 7-0 record. With its loss, JCU is now 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Blue Streaks jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after a jumper by senior Shayla Bell at the 18:16 mark.  The Yellow Jackets responded and took their first lead of the half at 13-12 on a layup by junior Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) with 13:12 left in the half.  The lead would change hands eight times throughout the rest of the half.  The last lead change came at the 6:11 mark when junior Michelle White (Hudson) canned a jumper giving the Yellow Jackets a 23-22 lead.  BW would outscore the Blue Streaks 12-2 over the last six minutes and take a 35-24 advantage into the locker room. 

In the second half,  BW increased its lead to 18 points, 56-38, with 10:45 remaining after a steal and a fastbreak layup by senior Nikki Altenweg (Perry).  John Carroll cut the lead to 15 points, 58-43, after a three-pointer by junior Jessica Gibbons with 9:02 remaining.  That would be as close as the Blue Streaks would get as the Yellow Jackets took control down the stretch for an 81-53 victory.

In addition to LatimerAltenweg had 12 points, five assists, and four steals.  Freshman Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) added 12 points and senior Jenn Neal (Mentor) chipped in with 10 points.

 JCU was led by Bell with 18 points and five rebounds.  Juniors Jessica Gibbons and Tracey Prosinski eached chipped in with nine points.

BW will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play OAC rival Marietta College in the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The 12th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team will look to win its third straight game when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University.  The Yellow Jackets seek to stay unbeaten in the OAC and NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region and defeat JCU for the 28th straight time.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 11-2 overall and with a perfect 6-0 OAC record following a 70-67 overtime victory against OAC foe Wilmington College on Saturday (Jan. 7). BW also is 9-0 in the Great Lakes Region of Division III.
        The Blue Streaks of John Carroll University enter tonight's game with a 7-5 overall and 3-3 OAC record following an 80-69 victory versus Marietta College on Saturday (Jan. 7) in University Heights.  The Blue Streaks have won four of their past five games overall.
       
The Baldwin Wallace versus John Carroll Series -- This is the 48th all-time meeting between Baldwin Wallace University and John Carroll University in women's basketball.  BW leads the all-time series, 30-17 and has won 27 straight games against the Blue Streaks.  The Yellow Jackets won both meetings a year ago, including a 62-50 victory in the first matchup in University Heights on January 12, 2005, and a 70-59 win in the  second game in Berea on Jan. 26.  The first-ever meeting was during the 1975-76 season when JCU won, 57-56.

In the Last Game Between BW and JCU:  Baldwin Wallace -- 70, John Carroll-- 59 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium on January 26, 2005 in Berea, Ohio --  In the final meeting last season between BW and JCU, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Streaks, 70-59, on January 26 in Berea.  BW was led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) with a game-high 20 points. In addition, senior All-OAC forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) chipped in with 14 points and junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Michelle White (Hudson) scored six points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

BW Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" senior Nikki Altenweg and 5'9" junior Michelle White in the backcourt with 5'8" freshman Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name).  On the inside, look for 5'10" sophomore Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) to start alongside 6'0" senior Jenn Neal.  Altenweg is scoring 10.8 points per game and grabs 3.6 rebounds per game. White
is scoring 7.5 ppg. and grabs 3.2 rpg. Mondrach is scoring 8.3 ppg. and grabs 3.3 rpg. Flowers is scoring 4.7 ppg. and grabs 3.3 rpg. Neal is scoring 6.8 ppg. and has blocked seven  shots.
        Harrer's bench is deep, so look for 5'6" junior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'11" sophomore swing player Alyson Cotter (Salem), junior 5'8" forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) and 5'8" sophomore forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'5" freshman guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Holy Name) and 5'8" freshman guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison).  Jaworski is scoring 4.4 ppg. and has 10 three-pointers  Cotter is scoring 6.7 ppg. and grabs 3.3 rpg. Latimer scores 7.7 ppg. and grabs 3.5 rpg.  Shrider scores 4.2 ppg., and grabs 3.9 rpg.  Quiring scores 3.1 ppg. and Mottayaw scores 2.8 ppg.                                                    

Scouting the John Carroll Blue Streaks -- Look for head coach Kristie Maravalli to start 5'7" senior guard Shayla Bell, 5'5" junior guard Jessica Gibbons and 5'7" freshman guard Rachael Price in the backcourt.  In the front court, look for 5'10" junior forward Allison Kern to start alongside 6'1" senior forward Caitlin Hubach.  Bell leads the team in scoring at 15.3 ppg., and pulls down 5.6 rpg.   Hubach is second on the team in scoring with 11.2 ppg., and leads the team in rebounding at 9.5 rpg.  Gibbons is tied for third in scoring at 7.8 ppg. grabs 3.5 rpg., and leads the team in assists with 38 and in steals with 24.  Price is also third on the team in scoring at 7.8 ppg., and grabs 2.1 rpg.  Kern is scoring 7.5 ppg., and grabs 4.8 rpg.
        Off the bench look for Maravalli to play 5'7" junior guard Mary Gilloon, 5'11" junior forward Tracey Prosinski, 5'5" freshman guard Alex D'Amico and 5'10" freshman forward Erin Zahariev.  Zahariev is scoring 6.8 ppg., and pulls down 4.1 rpg. Prosinski is scoring 5.2 ppg., and is shooting 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free-throw line.  Gilloon is scoring 1.9 ppg., pulls down 1.9 rpg., and has 14 assists.  D'Amico is averaging 1,9 ppg., and grabs 1.0 rpg.

In BW's Last Game:  Baldwin Wallace -- 70, Wilmington-- 67 at the Fred Raizk Center on January 7 in  Wilmington, Ohio --  In their last game, the Yellow Jackets won 70-67 in overtime versus OAC rival Wilmington  College on January 7 in Wilmington.  With the win, BW has won two straight contests.  The Yellow Jackets were led by senior guard Nikki Altenweg with a game-high 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds.  Freshman guard Amanda Mondrach added 12 points on four-of -six shooting from the floor. Rounding out the double-figure scorers was junior forward Jessica Latimer who came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds.  The game was tied 62-all at the end of regulation. Sophomore forward Stacia Shrider scored the game-winning basket and Altenweg sealed the win with a pair of foul shots.

In John Carroll's Last Game:  John Carroll -- 80, Marietta -- 69 on January 7 in University Heights -- In John Carroll's last game on Wednesday, January 7, 2006, the Blue Streaks defeated the Marietta Pioneers, 80-69.  Leading the way for John Carroll was Shayla Bell with a game-high 19 points.  Joining her in double-figures was Erin Zahariev with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Tracey Prosinski added 11 points and seven rebounds and was a perfect four-of-four from the free-throw line.  Caitlin Hubach and Allison Kern each added 10 points.  Hubach grabbed seven rebounds and Kern was a perfect six-of-six from the free-throw line.

Neal and Altenweg Among All-Time Leaders --  Senior All-OAC center Jenn Neal (Mentor) is the school's all-time leader with 87 blocked shots.  Overall, Neal has 598 career points and 317 career rebounds. Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) currently stands fourth all-time in school history in steals with 190 and is seventh all-time with 293 assists.  Altenweg also has 704 career points and 217 career rebounds.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in BW History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in BW history with 312 victories.  Harrer is 312-116 in her career with a .729 winning percentage and is in her 16th season at BW.
