The Sixth-Ranked Baldwin Wallace University Women Defeat Fifth-Ranked

Capital, 59-54, in Bexley to Improve to a Perfect 8-0

BEREA, OHIO — The sixth-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival and fifth-ranked and previously unbeaten Capital University, 59-54, today (Dec. 17) in an OAC game at the Capital Center in Bexley.

With their win, the Yellow Jackets improve to a perfect 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC.  With its loss, Capital loses for the first time this season and falls to 8-1 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.

In the first half, Capital jumped out to a 9-2 lead with 16:52 left when junior guard Kati Todd canned two foul shots.  Then BW went on a 16-0 run to lead 18-9 when junior forward Michelle White (Hudson) made a layup.  BW led by as many as 11 points with 3:59 left and by nine points at the intermission at 31-22. 

In the second half, BW extended its lead to 13 points at 35-22 at the 18:40 when freshman guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name) scored on a layup.  Capital then went on a 27-15 run to close to within 50-49 with 3:40 left when senior guard Sarah Heitkamp scored on a layup.  Yellow Jacket junior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) scored on a layup and junior forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) scored, was fouled and made her free throw for a 55-49 lead.

BW was led by senior guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) with 12 points.  For Capital, Heitkamp had a game-high 21 points, senior forward Jennifer Lilly had 11 and freshman guard Heather McAlpin had 10.

BW will next be in action on Tuesday, December 20 when they travel to Las Vegas, Nevada and play 24th-ranked Bates (Maine) College in the first round of the d3Desert Shootout Tournament at 6:30 p.m. EST. BW also plays either ninth-ranked Scranton (Pa.) College and Simpson (Iowa) College on Dec. 22 at either 6:30 or 8:45 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The ninth-ranked (d3hoops.com Internet Web site poll) Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team will look to win its eighth straight game to open the 2005-2006 season when it travels to Bexley to play Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival Capital University in a key early season OAC game.  BW and Capital were picked one-two in the OAC preseason poll.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 7-0 overall and 3-0 OAC record following a 72-56 victory against OAC rival Ohio Northern University on December 14 in Berea. BW also has beaten Bethany (W.Va.) College and the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at the Rochester Tournament, traditional rival Wittenberg University, Cleveland cross-town rival Case and OAC foes Otterbein College, Muskingum College and ONU.
        The Crusaders enter today's contest ranked fifth nationally by d3hoops.com and are 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the OAC following a 77-46 victory over Mount Union College last Saturday (Dec. 10) in Bexley.
       
The Baldwin Wallace versus Capital Series -- BW and Capital have played 48 times previously in women's basketball. The Crusaders hold a 33-15 series advantage. The two teams split a pair of games last season. Capital beat BW, 56-52, in Berea on December 18, 2004 and BW beat Capital, 84-68, in Bexley on February 19, 2005. BW has won 15 of the last 19 meetings between the two teams.  Capital won the first 29 games of the series.

The Last Meeting Between BW and Capital:  On February  19, 2005 in Bexley:  Baldwin Wallace --  84, Capital --  68  --  The Yellow Jackets and Capital last played on February 19, 2005 in Bexley and the Yellow Jackets won, 84-68.  BW was led by current senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) who scored a career-high 21 points.  Current junior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua) had 13 points in the winning effort.  Capital was led by current senior Sara Heitkamp's 31 points and six steals, and current seniors Kati Todd and Jennifer Lilly each scored 12 points.

BW Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and 5'9" junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC guard Michelle White (Hudson) in the backcourt with 5'8" freshman Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name).  On the inside, look for 5'10" sophomore Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) to start alongside 6'0" senior All-OAC center Jenn Neal (Mentor).  Altenweg is scoring 10.6 points per game and grabs 3.9 rebounds per game. White is scoring 9.4 ppg. and grabs 3.3 rpg. Mondrach is scoring 8.0 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg. Flowers is scoring 6.1 ppg. and tops the team at 4.3 rpg. Neal is scoring 6.4 ppg.
        Coach Harrer's bench is deep, so look for 5'6" junior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'11" sophomore swing player Alyson Cotter (Salem), junior 5'8" forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) and 5'8" sophomore forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) all to see action as veterans. The will be joined by 5'5" freshman guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Holy Name) and 5'8" freshman guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison).  Jaworski is scoring 6.6 ppg. and grabs 2.0 rpg, and has a team-leading nine three-pointers  Cotter is scoring 7.0 ppg. and grabs 3.7 rpg. Latimer scores 7.6 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg.  Shrider scores 4.6 ppg., and grabs 3.9 rpg.  Quiring scores 3.1 ppg. and Mottayaw scores 3.8 ppg.

Scouting the Capital University Crusaders -- Look for Head Coach Dixie Jeffers to start 5'6" senior All-OAC guard Sara Heitkamp, 5'9" senior All-OAC guard Kati Todd and 5'3" junior guard Kate Leopold in the backcourt.  In the front court, look for 6'0" senior All-OAC forward Jennifer Lilly to start alongside 5'10" freshman forward Daniele Manalac.  Heitkamp leads the team in scoring at 15.5 ppg. and also is tied for top rebounding honors with 6.5 rpg.  Todd is scoring 13.4 ppg. and tops the team with 17 three-pointers.  Lilly is averaging 9.0 ppg. and is tied with Heitkamp with 6.5 rpg.  Leopold is scoring 2.3 ppg. and Manalac scores 6.3 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg.
        Off the bench look for Coach Jeffers to play 6'0" sophomore forward Jenna Algie, 5'11" guard Heather McAlpin, and 5'3" point guard Lindsey Pfirman.  Algie scores 4.1 ppg., McAlpin scores 4.9 ppg. and Pfirman adds 2.3 ppg.

In BW's Last Game :  Baldwin Wallace -- 72, Ohio Northern -- 56 on December 14 in Berea, Ohio --  In their last game, the Yellow Jackets defeated OAC-rival Ohio Northern University, 72-56, on December 14 in the Ursprung Gymnasium.  Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was senior forward Jenn Neal with 14 points.  Senior guard Nikki Altenweg and junior guard Steffani Jaworski each chipped in with 10 points.

In Capital's Last Game: Capital -- 77, Mount Union -- 46 on December 10 in Alliance, Ohio -- In Capital's last game, the Crusaders defeated by the Purple Raiders of Mount Union, 77-46, on December 10, 2005 in Alliance, Ohio.  Leading the way for Capital was current senior guards Kati Todd and Sara Heitkamp who scored 15 and 14 points respectively.  Jenna Algie came off the bench to score nine points and grab a team high six rebounds.  Mount Union was lead by sophomore forward Alicia Williams who scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. 


Yellow Jacket Chatter

The OAC and National Polls --  The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish first in the Ohio Athletic Conference preseason poll by the coaches.  The Jackets are ranked 10th in the latest national poll published by www.d3hoops.com 

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fifth OAC regular season title in the last seven years and its fourth OAC Tournament crown in the last seven years.  BW also won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in eight of the last 10 years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in BW History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in BW history with 308 victories.  Harrer is 308-114 in her career and is in her 16th season at BW.
