BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated traditional and nonleague rival Wittenberg University, 65-50, tonight (Tuesday, November 22, 2005) in its home opener at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Recreational Center in Berea.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-0 overall while the Tigers fall to 2-1 for the season.
B-W got out to the early 2-0 lead but would trail the rest of the first half as the first twenty minutes of action saw Wittenberg reach its biggest lead of six twice, with the second time coming at the 5:04 mark when freshman forward Lauren Rivers scored on a layup to give the Tigers a 21-15 lead. B-W battled back, trimming the Tigers' lead to just three heading into halftime, at 28-25, when senior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) made a pair of free throws with :33 seconds remaining. The Yellow Jackets did struggle offensively shooting just 30.8 percent (eight-of-26) from the floor while committing 14 turnovers.
The second half would tell a different story for B-W as the Yellow Jackets opened up with an 18-6 run capped by junior guard Steffani Jaworski's (Parma/Padua) three-pointer, giving B-W a 43-34 advantage with 12:44 to play. The Tigers closed to within two points twice with the second time coming at the 4:55 mark when junior forward Kathy Hittle made a short jumper making the score 50-48. The final 4:55 belonged to the Yellow Jackets as they outscored the Tigers 15-2, reaching their biggest lead of 15 points when Jaworski made a layup with just :14 seconds left in the game. B-W shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) in the second half, including 40.0 percent (two-of-five) from three point range and made eight-of-nine (88.9%) free throw attempts.
Leading the way for B-W offensively were sophomore forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) and sophomore forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/Senior) with 13 points each. In addition, senior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and freshman guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Holy Name) each with eight points. Cotter, Flowers, and junior guard/forward Michelle White (Hudson) each had a team-high six rebounds.
For Wittenberg, Hittle led the way with a game-high 16 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Megan Miller chipped in with 12 points for the Tigers.
B-W will next be in action when it travels to University Circle on Tuesday, November 29, at 7:00 p.m. to play Cleveland cross-town and nonleague rival Case in the Emerson Gymnasium.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its third straight game when it plays host to traditional and nonleague rival Wittenberg University. Both B-W and Wittenberg are annually two of the top teams in Division III.
The Yellow Jackets opened the season last weekend (Nov. 18-19) and won the University of Rochester Tournament in Rochester, New York. B-W defeated Bethany (W.Va.) College, 90-38, in the first round and then beat host Rochester, 53-39, in the championship game.
The Tigers opened the season by winning the Virginia Wesleyan University Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia as they defeated the University of the Ozarks, 68-66, in their opener and then beat host Virginia Wesleyan, 65-55, in the championship game.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Wittenberg Series -- This is the 22nd time that Baldwin-Wallace College and Wittenberg University will meet in women's basketball. The first meeting occurred during the 1984-85 season when the Tigers defeated the Yellow Jackets , 66-55. B-W leads the series, 12-9, and won last year's meeting in Springfield, 72-62 The last Wittenberg victory came on November 20, 2001 in Springfield, 71-53. The Yellow Jackets have won four straight.

Altenweg is scoring 9.5 points per game and grabs 3.5 rebounds per game. White is scoring 7.0 ppg. and grabs 3.5 rpg. Mondrach is scoring 5.0 ppg. and grabs 3.5 rpg. Flowers is scoring 8.0 ppg. and tops the team at 5.5 rpg. Neal is scoring 2.5 ppg.
Harrer's bench is deep, so look for 5'6" junior guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan), 5'11" sophomore swing player Alyson Cotter (Salem), junior 5'8" forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) and 5'8" sophomore forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) all to see action as veterans. The will be joined by 5'5" freshman guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Holy Name) and 5'8" freshman guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison). Cotter is scoring 9.0 ppg. and grabs 3.5 rpg. Latimer scores 5.5 ppg. and grabs 3.5 rpg., Shrider scores 7.5 ppg., grabs 4.5 rpg. and has a team-leading three three-pointers and five steals. Quiring scores 2.0 ppg. and Mottayaw scores 5.5 ppg. and has a team-leading six assists.
Scouting The Wittenberg Tigers -- Look for veteran Head Coach Pam Smith to start 6'0" junior Kathy Hittle and 5'9" sophomore Ali Rohlfs and 5'9" junior forward Rachel Clark-Haggy on the inside and 5'5" senior Brittany Landreth, 5'6" junior Megan Miller on the perimeter. After two games, Hittle tops the team in scoring at 16.0 ppg. and rebounding at 12.5 rpg. Miller is second in scoring at 13.5 ppg. and has canned a team-leading six-of-11 three-pointers. She also grabs 5.0 rpg. Clark-Haggy tallies 8.5 ppg., Rohlfs scores 8.0 ppg. and tops the team with five steals. Landreth scores 6.5 ppg. and tops the squad with seven assists.
Off the bench, look for Coach Smith to play 6'0" sophomore forward Katie Gregorevich, 5'2" junior guard Andrea Hackett, 6'0" senior guard Carrie Jones, 5'10" freshman Rachel Dixon and 5'9" sophomore Ellie Stonecash. Gregorevich scores 6.5 ppg. and grabs 5.0 rpg. and Stonecash scores 4.0 ppg.
In B-W's First Game at Rochester: Baldwin-Wallace -- 90, Bethany (W.Va.) -- 38 at the University of Rochester Tournament in Rochester, New York -- The Yellow Jackets defeated Bethany College, 90-38 in the first round of the University of Rochester Tournament on Friday, November 18. Junior guard Steffani Jaworski and sophomore forward Stacia Shrider led the way for the Yellow Jackets with a game-high 11 points each. Senior point guard Nikki Altenweg chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.
In B-W's Second Game: Baldwin-Wallece -- 53, The University of Rochester (N.Y.) -- 39 in the University of Rochester Tournament Championship Game -- The Yellow Jackets defeated the University of Rochester, 53-39, to claim the championship at the University of Rochester Tournament in Rochester, New York. Nikki Altenweg and sophomore forward Alyson Cotter each led the way for the Yellow Jackets with nine points. Sophomore forward Carly Flowers also chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Stacia Shrider had a team-high eight boards. For her efforts, Shrider was named as the tournament's Most Valuable Player and both Altenweg and Flowers were tabbed to the all-tournament team.
In Wittenberg's Last Game: Wittenberg -- 65, Virginia Wesleyan -- 55 on November 19 in Norfolk, Va. -- The Tigers also won its seaon opening tournament as they competed at the Virginia Wesleyan Tip-Off Tournament in Norfolk, Virginia. Wittenberg won its opener against the University of the Ozarks, 68-66, on Friday, November 18 and then beat host Virginia Wesleyan College, 65-55, in the championship game on Nov. 19. Shrider Named MVP and Two Others Make All-Tournament Team -- Sophomore Stacia Shrider was named as the tournament Most Valuable Player at Rochester. In the two games, Shrider scored 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds, canned three three-pointers, passed for a pair of assists and made five steals.
Shrider was joined on the all-tourney team by senior Nikki Altenweg and sophomore Carly Flowers.
The OAC and National Polls -- The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish first in the Ohio Athletic Conference preseason poll by the coaches.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fifth OAC regular season title in the last seven years and its fourth OAC Tournament crown in the last seven years. B-W also won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in eight of the last 10 years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have nine straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 218-40 with an .845 winning percentage.
