BEREA, OHIO — Freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) scored a career-high 21 points tonight (Tuesday, November 23) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated traditional arch-rival Wittenberg University, 72-62, at the Wittenberg HPER Center in Springfield. The win was B-W's second straight.
With its win, B-W is now 2-1 overall. With its loss, Wittenberg fell to 1-2 overall.
In the first half, Wittenberg had an early, 14-13 lead before B-W went on a 13-0 run that was fueled by seven straight points from Shiplett to lead 26-14 with 7:56 left before halftime. B-W led by as many as 12 points on three separate occassions with the last one being at 39-27 with two seconds left before the intermission when junior guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored on a layup.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended their lead to as many as 14 points at 61-47 at the 7:51 mark when freshman forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior) canned a jumper. The closest Wittenberg would get was five points at 67-62 with 48 seconds remaining in the game. A basketball by Shiplett and three free throws by Altenweg then sealed the win for B-W.
In addition to Shiplett, Altenweg scored 14 points, grabbed nine rebounds and passed for nine assists. Also in double figures for B-W was freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) with a career-high 12 points and sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) with 10 markers. Wittenberg was led by sophomore center Kathy Hittle's 15 points.
The Yellow Jacket women are now idle until Wednesday, December 1 when they play nonleague foe Grove City College of Pennsylvania at 6:00 p.m. in the first game of a women's and men's doubleheader in Berea. The B-W men will play traditional rival Oberlin College at 8:00 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its second straight game when it travels to Springfield to play traditional and nonleague rival Wittenberg University. Both B-W and Wittenberg are annually two of the top teams in Division III.
The Yellow Jackets finished third in the Greater Cleveland Tip-Off Tournament in South Euclid after losing to Case Western Reserve University, 66-63, in overtime on Friday, November 19, then defeating Oberlin College, 78-45, in the consolation game on Saturday, Nov. 20.
The Tigers also finished third as they competed at the Southwestern University Tip-Off Tournament in Georgetown, Texas. Wittenberg lost its opener to Howard Payne (Texas) University, 65-53, on Friday, November 19 and then beat McMurray (Texas) University, 63-48, in the consolation game on Nov. 20.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Wittenberg Series-- This is the 21st time that Baldwin-Wallace College and Wittenberg University will meet in women's basketball. The first meeting occurred during the 1984-85 season when the Tigers defeated the Yellow Jackets , 66-55. B-W leads the series, 11-9, and won their last meeting, 77-62 The last Wittenberg victory came on November 20, 2001 in Springfield, 71-53. The Yellow Jackets have won three straight.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb), and 5'9" sophomore guard Michelle White (Hudson) on the perimeter. Look for 5'10" freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/Northwest), and 6'0" junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) to get the nod inside.
After two games, Cara Shiplett tops the team in scoring at 13.0 ppg., rebounding with 7.0 rpg. and steals with four. She is also canning a team-leading 55.6 percent of her field goals (10-of-18). Nikki Altenweg is the only other player in double-digit scoring at 10.5 ppg. Altenweg and Ashley Westenbarger are tied for the team-lead with seven assists each. Sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) comes off the bench and has a team-high four three-pointers.
Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play 6'0" junior forward Lindsay Mamula (Clinton/ Massillon Jackson), Jaworski, 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), and 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland). Thus far, Mamula is averaging just 1.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in limited action. Jaworski is averaging 9.0 ppg.
Scouting The Wittenberg Tigers -- Look for veteran Head Coach Pam Smith to start 6'0" sophomore Kathy Hittle and 5'9" freshman Ali Rohlfs on the inside and 5'8" junior Carrie Jones, 5'5" junior Brittany Landreth and 5'9" senior Alison Nahrup on the perimeter. Jones started the opener and 5'6" sophomore Megan Miller started the second game. After two games, Miller tops the team in scoring at 13.5 ppg. and has canned six-of-17 three-pointers. Rohlfs is the only other Tiger in double digits at 12.5 ppg. Jones tops Wittenberg with 6.5 rpg.
Off the bench, look for Coach Smith to play 6'0" freshman forward Katie Gregorevich, 5'2" sophomore guard Andrea Hackett and 6'0" junior forward Joyce Dindo among others.
IN B-W'S FIRST GAME: CWRU -- 67, Baldwin-Wallace -- 63 in Overtime at the Greater Cleveland College Tourney -- The Yellow Jackets were defeated by Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University, 66-63 in overtime, in the first round of the Greater Cleveland College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday, November 19, played at Notre Dame College of Ohio. Despite the loss, Nikki Altenweg led the Yellow Jackets in scoting with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Joining her in double figures were Steffani Jaworski with 11 points and both freshmen Ashley Westenbarger and Cara Shiplett each had 10 markers. Shiplett and Jenn Neal led the team in rebounding with eight and seven, respectively.
IN B-W'S SECOND GAME: Baldwin-Wallece -- 78, OBERLIN -- 45 at the Greater Cleveland College Tourney -- The Yellow Jackets defeated Oberlin College, 78-45, to claim third place at the Greater Cleveland Tip-Off Tournament in South Euclid. B-W was led in scoring by Cara Shiplett with 16 points and she also grabbed six rebounds. In addition, Carly Flowers and Michelle White each chipped in 10 points apiece. Flowers was a perfect five-of-five from the field. White grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
IN WITTENBERG'S LAST GAME: Wittenberg -- 65, McMurray (Texas) -- 48 on November 20 in Georgetown, Texas -- The Tigers also finished third as they competed at the Southwestern University Tip-Off Tournament in Georgetown, Texas. THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN B-W AND WITTENBERG: On November 25, 2003 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 77, Wittenberg -- 62 -- The Yellow Jackets defeated the Tigers, 77-62, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The Yellow Jackets were led by graduated senior All-American Erika Schultz who scored a game-high 19 points. Inaddition, current junior center Lindsay Mamula scored 14 points and grabbed seven boards. The Tigers were led by graduated seniors Amber Bishop (a game-high 19 points) and Haley Warden (17 points and 11 rebounds).

The OAC and National Polls -- The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish third by the OAC Coaches during the OAC's annual preseason conference call with the media on November 3. B-W was also tabbed to finish 21st in Division III by DIIINews magazine and is listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in the D3hoops.com Internet Web Site preseason poll.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 193-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 279 victories. Harrer is 279-109 in her career with a .707 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
