BEREA, OHIO — Freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) scored 11 points today (Saturday, January 8, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College, 84-56, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
With its win, B-W, 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the OAC, moves into first place. With its loss, Wilmington, the defending Division III national champion, fell to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. B-W's win also evened the overall series with the Quakers at 8-8.
In the first half, B-W never trailed, stretching its lead out to as many as 16 points with 2:54 remaining when freshman forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/Senior) hit a three-pointer to put the Yellow Jackets up 34-18. At the half, B-W led 37-23.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets extended its lead to 32 points, its biggest of the afternoon, after a 22-5 run spanning 5:36 when sophomore forward Shelly Altizer (Eastlake/North) hit a jumper with 2:24 remaining in the contest.
In addition to Shrider for B-W, sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) scored 10 points and three others chipped in with nine points each. Sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) added eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Wilmington was led by freshman guard Katie Streck with a game-high 12 points.
B-W next plays on Wednesday, January 12 when it travels to University Heights, Ohio to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at the Tony DeCarlo Center at 7:30 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to stretch their winning streak to three games when they play host to OAC rival and defending NCAA Division III National Champion Wilmington College in a key match-up for both teams. Wilmington enters the game all alone in first place in the OAC standings with B-W and Capital University both tied for second at 4-1 in league play.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 8-4 overall record following their 73-55 win against Mount Union on Wednesday night in Alliance. It was B-W's second straight win.
The Quakers enter this game ranked 18th in the latest ESPN/USA TODAY/ WBCA Coaches Association national poll with a 9-2overall record. The Quakers have been idle since recording a 72-58 victory against Marietta College in Wilmington on December 30.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Mount Union All-Time Series Information -- This is the 16th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Wilmington College in women's basketball. The Quakers hold the series lead at 8-7 in a series that is one of the best in Division III as well as the OAC. B-W and Wilmington have combined to win the past six OAC titles. B-W tied Capital for the title last year. B-W and Wilmington split its two meetings a year ago as the Yellow Jackets topped the Quakers, 73-57, in Wilmington, but lost, 80-70, in Berea. In the first-ever meeting in 1988-89, B-W won, 64-61. B-W and Wilmington have also played twice in the NCAA Division III National mTournament and split those games.
The Division III National Rankings -- B-W is not listed in the Top-25 of either the D3hoops.com internet web site Division III national poll and is listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in the ESPN/USA TODAY/WBCA Coaches Association national poll. Wilmington is ranked 22nd by D3hoops.com and 18th in the ESPN/USA TODAY/ WBCA Coaches poll.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The B-W Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westen-barger (McComb) in the back-court. Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Shiplett tops the team in scoring at 10.1 ppg., rebounding with 5.5 rpg. and is second in steals with 14. She is also canning a team-leading 52.7 percent of her field goals (48-of-91). Altenweg is second in scoring at 9.9 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 50 and steals with 35. Westenbarger is scoring 6.1 ppg. and is second with 33 assists and third in steals with 13. Neal is scoring 6.2 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg. and tops the team with 12 blocked shots. White scores 8.3 ppg. and is second with 5.0 rpg.
Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as seven players, depending on the opponent and matchups. Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.5 ppg. and leads the team with 20 three-pointers.
The Wilmington Probable Starters and Bench Players -- Look for Wilmington Head Coach Jerry Scheve to start 5"5" sophomore Sam Hood, 5'11" junior Courtney Balser, and 5'6" junior Shawna Thomas in the backcourt. Up front, look for 5'8" senior Siobhan Zerilla and 5'10" sophomore Kelly Peters to start. Balser tops the team in scoring at 13.5 ppg. and is teid for second on the team with 10 three-pointers. Zerilla is second on the team in scoring at 11.6 ppg. and is first in rebounding at 11.5 rpg. and in first steals with 12. She has also canned a team-leading 62.2 percent of her field goals (51-of-82). Hood is fifth in scoring at 6.1 ppg. and tops the team with 55 assists and first in three-pointers with 12. Peters and Thomas are scoring 5.5 and 4.2 ppg., respectively.
Off the bench, look for Coach Scheve to play 5'9" freshman Katie Streck, 5'11" sophomore Erica Smith, 5'5" freshman Jackie Hauke, 5'11" sophomore Kara Robinson and 5'5" freshman Anne Haky. Streck is third on the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg., second in rebounding at 5.9 rpg., and first in blocked shots with five. She is also second on the team, shooting 56.8 percent from the floor (46-of-81). Smith is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.4ppg.
In B-W's Last Game on January 5, 2005 versus Mount Union in Alliance: Baldwin-Wallace -- 73, Mount Union -- 55-- The Yellow Jackets built a 35-19 advantage in the first half behind eight points from sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski,who came off the bench to can two-of-three three-point shots; and seven ponits from junior guaard Nikki Altenweg. Five of Altenweg's points came from the free throw line. Jaworski lead B-W in scoring with 12 and freshman forward Cara Shiplett also scored in double figures with 11 points and also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
In Wilmington's Last Game on January 5, 2005 @ Ohio Northern in Ada: was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. Wilmington last played December 30 when it defeated Marietta College, 72-58, in Wilmingtron. The Quakers jumped out to a 28-25 halftime lead and coasted to the victory. Junior guard Courtney Balser had a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Also in double figures were senior forward Siobhan Zerilla who had 13 points and 12 rebounds and freshman Jackie Hauke with 11 points.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 193-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 286 victories. Harrer is 286-112 in her career with a .719 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
