BEREA, OHIO — Senior forward Siobhan Zerilla scored 16 points and led four Wilmington players in double figures today (Saturday, January 22, 2005) as the Quakers women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 75-56, in a battle for first place in the OAC at the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington.
With its win, Wilmington is now 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the OAC. With its loss, 22nd-ranked B-W is now 12-5 overall and 8-2 in the OAC.
In the first half, it was a back-and-forth battle that saw 12 lead changes in the first 12 minutes. During that time, B-W led by as many as four points at 15-11, with 11:13 remaining when freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) nailed a three-pointer. Wilmington would respond and come back to take the lead at the 8:12 mark when Zerilla scored on a layup to make the score 22-21. The Quakers would then open a substantial lead, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 20-7 in the final minutes of the first half. The Quakers led by as many as 16 points at 42-26, with 2:43 remaining when sopohomore guard Samantha Hood buried a three-pointer. B-W would cut the lead to 14, at 42-28 when sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) made two free throws with 2:28 remaining. Wilmington also led at halftime, 42-28.
In the second half, B-W came out with a 7-2 run to cut the Wilmington lead to nine points at 44-35, with 17:24 remaining when sophomore guard Michelle White (Hudson) split a pair of free-throws. Wilmington would then respond by going on an 18-4 run, and led by 23 points at at the 8:52 mark when sophomore forward Kelly Peters split a pair of free throws. B-W could not get any closer than 17 points with 6:48 remaining when Jaworski, who scored a game-high 18 points, nailed a three-pointer to make the score 62-45.
Wilmington was led by Zerilla who scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Also, in double figures for the Quakers was junior guard Courtney Balser who had 14, Hood who had 13 and freshman guard Katie Streck with 11.
In addition to Jaworski, sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. No other Yellow Jacket was in double figures.
B-W next plays on Wednesday, January 26 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.

PREGAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to stretch its winning streak to seven games when it plays a key Ohio Athletic Conference game at OAC-rival and defending NCAA Division III National Champion Wilmington College at the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington.
B-W enters the game with a 12-4 overall record and is all alone in first place in the OAC with an 8-1 record following its 80-47 victory on Tuesday against Heidelberg College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The Yellow Jackets have won six straight games, including an 84-56 decision against the Quakers two weeks ago. During its six-game streak, B-W is outscoring the opposition by 25.8 points per game.
Wilmington comes into the contest with a 12-3 overall record and is in second place in the OAC with a 7-1 record. The Quakers beat eighth-ranked Capital University, 65-56, on Wednesday in Wilmington. The Quakers enter the game with a three-game win streak.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Wilm ington All-Time Series Information -- This is the 17th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Wilmington College in women's basketball. The series between these schools is tied at 8-8 and is one of the best in Division III as well as the OAC. The Yellow Jackets won the first meeting of the season, 84-56, on January 8 in Berea. B-W and Wilmington have combined to win the past six OAC titles. B-W tied Capital for the title last year. B-W and Wilmington split its two meetings a year ago as the Yellow Jackets topped the Quakers, 73-57, in Wilmington, but lost, 80-70, in Berea. In the first-ever meeting in 1988-89, B-W won, 64-61. B-W and Wilmington have also played twice in the NCAA Division III National mTournament and split those games.
The Division III National Rankings -- The Yellow Jackets are ranked 22nd in this week's USA TODAY/ ESPN/ WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) national Division III poll and is listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in this week's D3hoops.com internet web site poll. Wilmington is ranked 24th in the WBCA poll and is not listed in the D3hoops.com poll.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The B-W Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the back-court. Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Altenweg tops the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg., assists with 60 and steals with 45. Shiplett is second in scoring at 9.9 ppg., first in rebounding with 5.4 rpg. and is second in steals with 18. She is also canning a team-leading 54.6 percent of her field goals (65-of-119). Westenbarger is scoring 6.1 ppg. and is second with 33 assists and third in steals with 16. Neal is scoring 7.1 ppg. and grabs 4.2 rpg. and tops the team with 14 blocked shots. White scores 7.4 ppg. and is second with 4.9 rpg.
Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as seven players, depending on the opponent and matchups. Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.3 ppg. and leads the team with 24 three-pointers.
The Wilmington Probable Starters and Bench Players -- Look for Wilmington Head Coach Jerry Scheve to start 5"5" sophomore Sam Hood, 5'11" junior Courtney Balser, and 5'6" junior Shawna Thomas in the backcourt. Up front, look for 5'8" senior Siobhan Zerilla and 5'10" sophomore Kelly Peters to start. Balser tops the team in scoring at 12.5 ppg. and is third on the team with 11 three-pointers. Zerilla is second on the team in scoring at 11.7 ppg. and is first in rebounding at 11.7 rpg. and tied for first in steals with 15. She is also second on the team, canning 57.3 percent of her field goals (67 of 117). Hood is fifth in scoring at 6.1 ppg. and tops the team with 69 assists and in three-pointers with 15. Peters and Thomas are scoring 5.0 and 4.7 ppg., respectively.
Off the bench, look for Coach Scheve to play 5'9" freshman guard/ forward Katie Streck, 5'11" guard sophomore Erica Smith, 5'5" point guard freshman Jackie Hauke, 5'11" forward sophomore Kara Robinson and 5'5" freshman guard Anne Haky. Streck is third on the team in scoring at 10.7 ppg., second in rebounding at 5.3 rpg., and is first in blocked shots with eight. She is also shooting a team-leading 57.4 percent from the floor (58-of-101). Smith is fourth on the team in scoring at 7.7 ppg.

She was supported by sophomore forward Jessica Latimer who also came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds. B-W led 37-23 at halftime and by as many as 32 points and 14 of 15 Yellow Jackets who saw action scored points. B-W outrebounded Wilmington, 54-35. Freshman Katie Streck led the Quakers with 12 points.
In B-W's Last Game on January 19, 2005 versus Heidelberg in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 80, Heidelberg -- 47-- In B-W's last game, the Yellow Jackets defeated Heidelberg College, 80-47,on Tuesday at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. Freshman forward Cara Shiplett led the Yellow Jackets in scoring and rebounding with 18 points and nine caroms as B-W improved to 12-4 overall, and remained in first place in the OAC at 8-1. The win tied a season-high of six straight victories. In addition, junior point guard Nikki Altenweg chipped in with 11 points.
In Wilmington's Last Game on January 19, 2005 in Wilmington: Wilmington 65, Capital 56 -- In Wilmington's last game, a 65-56 victory over then number eighth ranked (ESPN/USA Today/WBCA poll) Capital, the Quakers overcame an early 7-0 deficit to hold a 31-28 edge at intermission. Wilmington took its first lead of the game at the 8:37 mark when Erica Smith canned a three pointer. In the second half Capital took a one point lead behind a Jennifer Lilly layup, however the Quakers took the lead for good when Courtney Balser made the back end of a pair of free throws with 7:51 remaining. Siobhan Zerilla led Wilmington with 14 points and 17 rebounds.

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 210 career assists and 127 career steals to rank 14th in assists and ninth in steals. Next up on the all-time steal list is Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150. She needs 36 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list.
The Yellow Jackets Have Led Almost Every Game at Halftime -- The Yellow Jackets have either been ahead or tied at halftime in every game this season. The only game that was tied was with Otterbein (32-32). B-W has also led three nationally-ranked teams at halftime: Capital University (32-28), the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (34-29) and Albion, Mich. (29-26).
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 290 victories. Harrer is 290-112 in her career with a .724 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
