Capital Women Defeat Baldwin-Wallace, 76-59, in Key OAC Match-Up in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Senior forward Caitlin Elsass scored a game-high 24 points as the Capital University women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 76-59, today (Saturday, February 6, 2010) in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The loss snaps B-W’s 12-game win streak and gives Capital possession of first place in the OAC.

With the win, the Crusaders improve to 15-6 overall, 12-2 in the OAC, and sweep the regular season series with the Yellow Jackets. B-W falls to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in the OAC.

In addition to Elsass for Capital, Kristen Richardson scored 22 points. B-W was led by junior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) with 17 points.

For the game, the Crusaders forced the Yellow Jackets into a season-high tying 26 turnovers.  

In the first half, Capital jumped out to an 8-2 lead with a Kristen Richardson layup at the 17:42 mark. B-W answered with a 7-0 run ending in a three-point play by Schroeder that made the score 9-8 at 16:27. Capital regained the advantage for the next four and a half minutes until B-W moved back ahead 18-17 at 11:56 when freshman point guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) drove for a layup, was fouled, and hit the charity shot for a three-point play.

The two sides then went back and forth until Capital broke a 26-26 tie with a 13-2 run ending in a Richardson fast-break layup with one second left in the period, making the score 39-28.

In the second half, B-W was never able to get its deficit below nine. Capital’s largest lead was 20 on four separate occasions, the latest coming at 76-56 with 14 seconds left to play.  

B-W is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 10 when third-place Mount Union College visits Berea and the Ursprung Gym for a 7:30 p.m. game.
