The Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Otterbein, 79-68, in Berea to Improve

to 16-5 overall and 12-2 in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO —  Freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) scored 19 points today (Saturday, February 5, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College, 79-68, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  The win was B-W’s fourth straight and 10th in its last 11 games.

With its win, B-W is now 16-5 overall and 12-2 in the OAC and remains tied for first place with Wilmington. With its loss, Otterbein is now 13-8 overall and 10-4 in the OAC and in third place.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as 12 points at 26-14 with 7:20 left before haltime when freshman guard Alyson Cotter (Salem) made a three-pointer. Otterbein then went on a 15-5 run to close to within two points at 31-29 with 2:03 left when junior guard Jennifer Duke scored on a layup. B-W led at halftime, 33-31.

In the second half, B-W built an 11-point advantage at 10:54 mark at 55-44 when Shiplett made a jumper.  Otterbein then went on a 7-0 run to make the score 55-51 with 8:42 left when sophomore guard Janel Iden scored on a layup.  B-W then outscored the Cardinals 24-17 the rest of the half, including making its final 12 straight foul shots in the final 3:41 to capture its win.

Joining Shiplett in double figures for the Yellow Jackets were sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) and junior center Jenn Neal (Mentor) with 14 points each.       

Otterbein was led by the trio of Iden, senior Danielle Holbrook and senior guard Valerie Ruschau with 15 points each. 

B-W next plays on Wednesday, February 9 when it hosts OAC-rival Mount Union College in an OAC game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET women's basketball team host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College on Saturday, February 5, 2005 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.  Prior to the game, B-W will recognize current assistant coach and 2004 graduate Erika Schultz for her 2004 Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-American award.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look for its fourth straight victory and to remain in first place in the OAC Standings when it hosts OAC-rival Otterbein College at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 15-5 overall and 11-2 OAC record following its 72-44 victory on Tuesday night in Tiffin against Heidelberg College.  At 11-2 in the OAC, B-W is tied for first place in the OAC Standings with Wilmington College.  The Yellow Jackets have won three straight and nine of their last 10 games overall.
        The Cardinals enter the game 13-7 overall and 10-3 in the OAC following their 80-57 victory against Marietta College on Wednesday in Westerville.  The Cardinals have won four straight games and nine of their last 10 games overall, including an 80-67 win at fourth place Capital University last Saturday (Jan. 29).

The Baldwin-Wallace versus Otterbein All-Time Series Information -- The Baldwin-Wallace and Otterbein have played 56 times previously in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets holding a 35-21 series advantage.  B-W won the first meeting between the two teams this season, 72-70, in Westerville, on December 4, 2005.   B-W won both regualr season meetings a year ago, 71-58, in Westerville and 65-51 in Berea.  The Cardinals beat the Yellow Jackets 59-56 in the 2004 OAC Tournament.  The series began in 1974-75 and B-W won the first-ever meeting, 50-49.

The Division III National Rankings -- Baldwin-Wallace and Otterbein both enter this game unranked in both the D3hoops.com internet web site and ESPN/USA TODAY/ WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) national Division III polls.

The Yellow Jacket Probable Starters --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb), and 5'9" sophomore guard Michelle White (Hudson) on the perimeter.  Look for 5'10" freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest), and 6'0" junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start at forward.  After 20 games, Altenweg leads the team in scoring at 10.6 ppg., and is first with 69 assists, 57 steals and shoots a team-leading 81.6 percent from the foul line.  Shiplett is second in scoring at 9.8 ppg. and tops the team with 4.8 rebounds per game. She also shoots a team-leading 52.3 percent from the floor.  White scores 6.9 ppg. and grabs 4.6 rpg. and has blocked 10 shots.  Neal scores 7.7 ppg., grabs 4.0 rpg. and tops the team with 18 blocked shots.  Westenbarger scores 6.2 ppg. and has 40 assists and 23 three-pointers.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). Jaworski is third on the team in scoring at 8.4 ppg. and leads the team with 31 three-pointers.  Latimer scores 3.2 ppg. and is third with 4.1 rpg.

Scouting The Otterbein Cardinals -- Look for Otterbein Head Coach Connie Richardson to start four guards in, 5'8" senior Valerie Ruschau, 5'8" junior Abby Perez, 5'8" senior Amanda Fisher and 5'10" sophomore Janel Iden. On the inside, look for 5'11" senior center Danielle Holbrook to be the go-to player.  Holbrook is the leading scorer 16.3 ppg. and rebounder 8.6rpg., shoots 57.9 percent from the floor, 78.6 percent from the foul line, has blocked a team-leading 20 shots and has added 23 steals.  Perez is second in scoring at 13.6 ppg., tops the Cardinals with 103 assists and 68 steals and has canned 19 three-pointers.  In 17 starts, Ruschau is scoring 8.0 ppg. and cans 78.2 percent of her foul shots.  Fisher is fifth in scoring at 5.7 ppg., shoots 85.2 percent from the foul line and has 15 treys.  Iden scores 3.8 ppg. and grabs 2.5 rpg.
        Off the bench look for Coach Richardson to play 5'7" junior Michelle Keeney, 5'9" freshman guard Sara Fee, 5'10" freshman guard Ana Gamble, 6'1" sophomore center Lauren Roman, 6'0" freshman forward Ericka Falcone and 5'7" freshman center Chelsea Callif.  Fee is fourth omn the team in scoring at 6.5 ppg., has 30 assists and 24 steals and shoots 76.1 percent from the foul line.  Keeney scores 5.2 ppg. and has 18 treys.  Callif scores 4.6 ppg. and grabs 2.8 rpg.

In the First Meeting Between B-W and Otterbein, on December 4, 2005 in Westerville:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 72, Otterbein --  70--  In the last game between B-W and Otterbein, the  Yellow Jackets won, 72-70, at the Rike Center in Westerville.  Junior forward Jenn Neal  scored the game-winning bucket with 12.6 seconds remaining to give the Yellow Jackets the win.  Neal finished with 13 points and two rebounds.  Sophomore forward Michelle White had a team high 15 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman forward Cara Shiplett added eight rebounds and eight points.  Otterbein was led by junior guard Michelle Keeney with a game-high 16 points and four assists.  Senior center Danielle Holbrook chipped in with 15 points and a team-high six rebounds.  Junior guard Abbey Perez had 10 points and freshman guard Sara Fee came off the bench to also score 10 markers.

In B-W's Last Game, on February 1, 2005 versus Heidelberg in Tiffin:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 72, Heidelberg --  44 --  In the Yellow Jackets last game, a 72-44, victory against Heidelberg College on Wednesday (Feb. 1) in Tiffin, B-W improved to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the OAC, won its third straight game and its ninth in its last 10 games overall. Junior point guard Nikki Altenweg led B-W in scoring with 13 points. She also grabbed six rebounds, passed for three assists and made six steals. In addition, sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski came off the bench to score 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

In Otterbein's Last Game, on February 2 versus Marietta College in Westerville:  Otterbein--80, Marietta --57--  In Otterbein's last game, an 80-57 victory against Marietta College on Wednesday night (Feb. 2) in Westerville, the Cardinals improved to 13-7 overall and 10-3 in the OAC and won their fourth straight game.  Senior center Danielle Holbrook led Otterbein in scoring with 32 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, and six rebounds.  Junior guard Michelle Keeney and freshman guard Sara Fee joined Holbrook in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Sophomore forward Lauren Roman led Otterbein with seven rebounds and junior guard Abby Perez had nine assists.


Yellow Jacket Chatter

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 219 career assists and 139 career steals to rank 12th in assists and ninth in steals.  Next up on the all-time steal list is ninth-ranked Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150.  She needs 26 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list and tie 10th-place Mandy Zolciak (1998-2001), who had 245.

Cheri Harrer is Quickly Approaching 300 Career Wins -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 293 victories.  Harrer is 293-113 in 15 seasons at B-W.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years.  B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season.  During that time span, B-W is 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
