The 20th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat ONU, 67-45, in Berea

for its Sixth Straight Victory

BEREA, OHIO - Freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) scored a career-high 15 points tonight (December 15, 2004) as the 20th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 67-45, at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The victory was B-W's sixth straight and set up a showdown this Saturday in Berea with fifth-ranked and unbeaten Capital University.

Westenbarger canned four-of-five three-pointers and five-of-seven shots overall and added a foul shot enroute to her career-best game.

With its win, B-W improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the OAC. With its loss, ONU fell to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 19 points on two occassions with the last one being at 40-21 at with 1:01 left before halftime when freshman guard Alyson Cotter (Salem) canned a pair of foul shots. The Yellow Jackets also led at halftime, 40-23.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 24 points on two occassions with the last one being at 67-43 with 1:49 left in the game when sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield) scored on a layup.

In addition to Westenbarger for B-W, freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) scored 10 points and led the team with five rebounds.

ONU was led Jenny Fruth with 13 points and Erin Brand had 10.

The Yellow Jacket women will next play on Saturday, December 18 when they host fifth-ranked Capital University at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #7 vs. Ohio Northern

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET women's basketball team goes on the road for a match up against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in an OAC game on Wednesday, December 15, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. in the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its sixth straight game as it travels to Ada to play OAC-upstart Ohio Northern University in a key early-season OAC game at the ONU Sports Center.  B-W is also looking for its 21st straight win against the Polar Bears.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 5-1 overall and perfect 2-0 OAC record following a 68-49 victory against Muskingum College last Saturday at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  B-W has won five straight games since a season-opening loss.  The Yellow Jackets are also seeking its ninth straight 20-win season and its fifth OAC regular season title in the last seven years
        The Polar Bears, under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Michelle Durand, may be the most improved team in the conference and enter the game at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC following a 59-50 win at the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta on Saturday.

The Baldwin-Wallace versus Ohio Northern All-Time Series Information -- The Baldwin-Wallace College and Ohio Northern University have met 45 times previously in women's basketball with the Polar Bears holding a  23-22 series advantage. The Yellow Jackets have won 20 straight of the past meetings with ONU, including a 75-66 decision in the last meetins a year ago on February 11, 2004 in Ada, Ohio.  The last Polar Bear win against B-W came on January 7,1995 when ONU won, 66-46, in Ada, Ohio.

The Division III National Rankings -- B-W was ranked 21st in the latest (Dec. 7) WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III national poll.  It was just the second WBCA poll of the year.  The Yellow Jackets were ranked 18th in the WBCA preseason poll but fell to No. 21 in its second poll.  To date, B-W has not been ranked in the weekly D3hoops.com national Division III poll.  The Yellow Jackets were listed in the "Others Receiving Votes" section in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, but have not been listed in any of its first two regular season polls.

The B-W Probable Starters --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb), and 5'9" sophomore guard Michelle White (Hudson) on the perimeter.  Look for 5'10" freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest), and 6'0" junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start at forward.  After four games, Shiplett tops the team in scoring at 11.8 ppg. and rebounding with 6.5 rpg.  She is also canning a team-leading .509 percent of her field goals (27-of-53).  Nikki Altenweg is the only other player in double-digit scoring at 11.5 ppg. Altenweg and Ashley Westenbarger are leading the team in assists as Altenweg has 26 and Westenbarger has 16.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as nine players, depending on the opponent and matchups.  Look for 6'0" junior forward Lindsay Mamula (Clinton/ Massillon Jackson),5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore).  Mamula is averaging 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in limited action.  Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.8 ppg. and is leading the team with nine three-pointers.
       
The ONU Probable Starters --Look for ONU Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5'9" freshman forward Erin Brand, 5'9" senior forward Jen Hrovat and 5'10" sophomore forward Danielle Andreasen on the inside. In the backcourt, look for 5'6" senior Jenny Fruth and 5'6" senior Sandy Ziegler to start.  Brand is third on the team in scoring at 9.1 ppg and first in rebounding at 6.7 rbg.
        Off the bench, look for Coach Durand to play 5'2" freshman guard Jenny Markle, 5'9" senior forward Jenny Beane, 5'9" sophomore forward Kristin Crawford and 5'6" sophomore guard Sarah Giese.  Markle tops the team in scoring at 10.3 points per game.

THE LAST MEETING:  On February 11, 2004 inAda, Ohio:  Baldwin-Wallace --  75 -- ONU-- 66.  In the last game between B-W and ONU on February 11, 2004 in Ada at the ONU Sports Center, B-W defeated the Polar Bears, 75-66, for its 20th straight win against ONU.  Leading the way was graduated All-American and current assistant coach Erika Schultz with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds. Joining her in double figures was current junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg with 13 points and seven assists and current sophomore forward Michelle White with 11 points.  Graduated senior Alyssa Rickert led ONU with a game-high 27 points, including five-of-five shooting from three-point range.

In B-W's Last Game on December 11, 2004 versus Muskingum in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace --  68, Muskingum --  49--  In B-W's last game on Saturday, Dec. 11, a 68-49 victory against Muskingum College in Berea, the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.  Leading the way was junior point guard Nikki Altenweg with 14 points.  Joining Altenweg in double-figures and coming off the bench was freshman wing player Alyson Cotter with 10 points. The Yellow Jackets built a quick 13-2 lead and led by 28 points at halftime.  In the second half, B-W led by as many as 31 points. B-W outrebounded Muskingum, 40-27, and made eight-of-12 three-pointers.  Sophomore guard Steffani Jaworsi came off the bench to lead B-W with a career-high seven rebounds.

In ONU's Last Game on December 11 versus Marietta in Marietta, Ohio:  Ohio Northern -- 59, Marietta --  50 --  In ONU's last game on Saturday, Dec. 11, the Polar Bears defeated the Pioneers from Marietta College  59-50 at the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta.  The Polar Bears improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC and are having their best start in many years.  Leading the way for ONU was freshman forward Erin Brand with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Freshman guard Jenny Markle and sophomore forward Kristin Crawford both came off the bench to each chip in with 10 points.


Yellow Jacket Chatter 

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years.  B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season.  During that time span, B-W is 199-34 with an .854 winning percentage.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 284 victories.  Harrer is 283-109 in her career with a .722 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
