The Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Ohio Northern, 76-54, in Berea for

Seventh Straight and Remain in First Place in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO —  Junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored 14 points tonight (Wednesday, February 16, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 76-54, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  The win was B-W’s season-high seventh straight and 13th in its last 14 games.  It was also B-W's 22nd straight win against ONU and gives the Yellow Jackets a 24-23 all-time series lead.

With its win, B-W is now 19-5 overall and 15-2 in the OAC and remains in a first place tie with Wilmington College. The Yellow Jackets can now clinch a ninth straight 20-win season with a win on Saturday at third place Capital University.  With its loss, ONU is now 11-13 overall and 6-11 in the OAC.

B-W opened the game with a 10-2 run, with five of those points coming from senior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor).  The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 16 points, 33-17, with 6:33 remaining in the first half when sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) converted on a layup.  The Polar Bears cut the lead to seven points, 36-29, when forward Jen Hrovat made a pair of free throws, before Altenweg hit a three pointer with 10 seconds left to put the halftime score at 39-29.

In the second half, Ohio Northern pulled with six points of B-W with 9:25 remaining, at 57-51, before the Yellow Jackets went on a 14-0 run sparked by seven points from Altenweg.  B-W held its largest lead of the game at 22 points, 76-54, when sophomore guard Kim Johnson (Athens) scored on a layup.  The Yellow Jackets shot 57.1 percent from behind the three point line as they made eight of their fourteen three point shots.

Joining Altenweg in double figures for the Yellow Jackets was freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) with 11 markers.

ONU was led by Danielle Andreasen who scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds.

This Saturday's game at Capital is key for B-W.  The Crusaders handed the Yellow Jackets one of their two OAC losses by beating B-W, 56-52, on December 18, 2004.

Game Notes vs. Ohio Northern

 

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET women's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, Febuary 16, 2005 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, Ohio.  This is the second to last regular season game for both teams.  The 2005 OAC Tournament begins on Feb. 22.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its seventh straight game when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in Berea. In addition, with wins this week against ONU and at Capital University on Saturday, B-W can clich its second straight OAC regular season championship.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 18-5 overall and 14-2 OAC record following their 87-58 win against OAC-rival Muskingum College last Saturday in New Concord.  The victory was B-W's season-high-tying sixth straight and 12th win in its last 13 contests.  The win also kept B-W in a first place tie in the OAC Standings.
        The Polar Bears enter this game with an 11-12 overall and 6-10 OAC record following a 58-54 overtime loss to Marietta College in Ada last Saturday.  ONU has lost two straight games and eight of its last 10 contests.

The Baldwin-Wallace versus Ohio Northern All-Time Series Information -- B-W and ONU have met 46 times previously in women's basketball with the all-time series tied at 23-23 following a 67-45 Yellow Jacket victory in the first meeting this season on December 15, 2004 in Ada. The Yellow Jackets have won 21 straight meetings against ONU, including twice last season.  The last Polar Bear win against B-W came on January 7,1995 when ONU won, 66-46, in Ada.  The first meeting took place in 1974-75 when ONU beat the Yellow Jackets, 67-42.

The Division III National Rankings -- B-W and ONU enter this game unranked in the last released D3hoops.com and ESPN/ USA TODAY/ WBCA polls on Tuesday, Feb. 8.  The next set of polls will be released on Feb. 15.

The Ohio Athletic Conference Race -- B-W is tied with Wilmington College for first place in the OAC at 14-2.  Capital and Otterbein College are tied for third place at 12-4 in the OAC.  All four teams have secured a home court advantage for the upcoming OAC Tournament which begins on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

The B-W Probable Starters --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb), and 5'9" sophomore guard Michelle White (Hudson) on the perimeter.  Look for 5'10" freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest), and 6'0" junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start at forward.  After 23 games, Shiplett tops the team in scoring at 10.7 ppg. and rebounding with 5.0 rpg.  She is also canning 51.6 percent of her field goals (98-of-190) and has 28 steals.  Altenweg also is in double-digit scoring at 10.3 ppg. She also grabs 3.5 rpg., tops the team in assists with 86 and steals with 62 and has canned 26 three-pointers. Neal is fourth in scoring at 8.1 ppg., grabs 4.2 rpg., shoots 51 percent from the floor and has blocked a team-leading 19 shots. The versatile White is scoring 7.0 ppg., is second with 4.7 rpg. and cans a team-leading 52.4 percent of her shots from the floor.  Westenbarger scortes 6.3 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg., is second with 54 assists and has 25 three-pointers.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore).  Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.5 ppg. and is leading the team with 35 three-pointers.
       
The ONU Probable Starters --Look Polar Bear Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5'9" freshman Erin Brand, 5'9" senior Jen Hrovat and 5'9" sophomore Kristin Crawford on the inside. In the backcourt, look for 5'6" senior Jenny Fruth and 5'6" senior Sandy Ziegler to start.  Brand tops the team in scoring at 11.1 pp, grabs 4.9 rpg., has passed for 26 assists and made 17 steals.  Hrovat is second in scoring at 9.1 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg., cans 51.9 percent of her field goals and 83 percent of her foul shots.  Crawford has started eight games, including Saturday against Marietta. She averages 5.2 ppg. and 3.9 rpg.  Fruth scores 6.1 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg., has passed for 37 assists and made 27 steals.  Ziegler scores 5.9 ppg., grabs 2.4 rpg. and leads the team with 39 assists.
        Off the bench, look for Coach Durand to play 5'2" freshman guard Jenny Markle, 5'9" senior forward Jenny Beane, 5'10 sophopmore forward Danielle Andresen, 5'8" freshman guard Megan Cevasco and 5'6" sophomore guard Sarah Giese.  Also, 5'4" sophomore guard Diana Smith has played in 13 games. Markle is the top bench player in scoring at 6.7 points per game and is among the nation's best Division III three-point shooters, canning 55.1 percent (38-of-69).

In the First Meeting This Season Between B-W and ONU, on December 15, 2004 in Ada:  Baldwin-Wallace -- 67, ONU -- 45 --  In the first meeting this season between B-W and ONU, on December 15, 2004 in Ada, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Polar Bears, 67-45.  It was B-W's 21st straight win against ONU and evened the all-time series record at 23-23.  In the win, freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger scored a career-high 15 points and canned four-of-five three-pointers.  Supporting Westenbarger in the win was Carra Shiplett with 10 points and a team-high five rebound.  Despite the loss, ONU was led by senior guard Jenny Furth with 13 points and freshman forward Erin Brand with 10 points

In B-W's Last Game on Feb. 12, 2005 versus Muskingum in New Concord, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace --  87, Muskingum --  58--  In B-W's last game, on Saturday, Feb. 12 in New Cocord, the Yellow Jackets defeated OAC-rival Muskingum College, 87-58.  The win was B-W's sixth straight and 12th in its last 13 contests. Sophomore forward Kara Shiplett led four double figure scorers with 18 points. Junior center Jenn Neal had 17 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Kelly Williams came off the bench to score 10 points.

In ONU's Last Game, on Feb. 12, 2005 in Ada:  Marietta -- 58, Ohio Northern -- 54 in overtime --  In ONU's last game, on Saturday, Feb. 12, the Polar Bears lost at home in overtime to the Marietta College Pioneers, 58-54.  Despite the loss, freshman forward Erin Brand scored a team-high 12 points and freshman guard Megan Cevasco scored 11 markers.

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 236 career assists and 144 career steals to rank 12th in assists and ninth in steals.  In steals, Altenweg needs seven more to surpass ninth-ranked Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150.  She needs nine more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list and tie 10th-place Mandy Zolciak (1998-2001), who had 245.

Cheri Harrer is Approaching The 300-Win Plateau -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 296 victories and needs four more to reach the 300-win plateau.  Harrer is 296-113 in 15 seasons at B-W.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- With wins in its final two regular season games, the Yellow Jackets can win their fifth OAC regular season title in the last seven years.  B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. A year ago, B-W tied Capital University for the regular season crown.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- Also with two wins this week, the Yellow Jackets can clinch a ninth straight 20-win season in 2004-2005.  B-W currently owns a streak of  eight straight 20-win seasons.  During that time span, B-Ware 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
