68-49, in Berea for its Fifth Straight Victory
BEREA, OHIO -- Junior Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored 14 points today (December 11, 2004) as the 21st-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 68-49, at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The victory was B-W's fifth straight.
With its win, B-W improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the OAC. With its loss, Muskingum fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.
In the first half, B-W led by as many as 28 points at 37-9 just before the end of the half when sophomore Michelle White (Hudson) scored on a layup with two seconds left in the half. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Fighting Muskies to just nine points and 17 percent shooting from the field (four of 23).
In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 33 points at 51-18 with 13:54 left in the game when Altenweg connected on a three-pointer. Muskingum would cut the B-W lead to 17 at 62-45 with 2:50 left in the game thanks to a three-point basket by Renee Thatcher, but the Muskies would could not get any closer as the Yellow Jackets went on to the 68-49 victory.
In addition to Altenweg for B-W, freshman Alyson Cotter ( Salem/ Senior) also scored double figures with 10 points. Sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) led the Yellow Jackets with seven rebounds.
Muskingum was led by Jennifer Huffman's game-high 16 points followed by Leah Miller who scored 10 points. Miller also had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Yellow Jacket women will next play on Wednesday, December 15 when they travel to Ada to play OAC-rival Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its fifth straight game when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College at the Ursprung Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 4-1 overall and 1-0 OAC record following a last-second, 72-70 victory against Otterbein College last Saturday (Dec. 4) in Westerville. Since its season-opening, 66-63 overtime loss to Case Western Reserve University, B-W has beaten Oberlin College (78-45), traditional rival Wittenberg University (72-62) in Springfield, Grove City College of Pennsylvania (84-60) in Berea and Otterbein.
The Fighting Muskies enter this game with a 1-4 overall and 1-2 OAC mark following a 77-69 win on Wednesday (Dec. 8) to OAC-rival Mount Union College in New Concord. The Muskies are coached by first-year mentor Beth Fox.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Muskingum All-Time Series Information -- The Baldwin-Wallace and Muskingum have played 46 times previously in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets holding a 24-22 series advantage. The Yellow Jackets took advantage in the series by winning six the last six straight and 23 of the last 24 games. In the last meeting, in New Cocord, B-W won 73-51. The Current WBCA National Poll -- In the most recent WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III national poll, releases on Tuesday, December 7, the B-W women were ranked 21st. It is the first poll since the WBCA preseason poll that was conducted on November 17. The Yellow Jackets were ranked 18th in the preseason poll. B-W is one of three OAC teams ranked by the WBCA. Capital University is sixth and defending NCAA Division III national champ, Wilmington is 10th.
The B-W Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt. Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Shiplett tops the team in scoring at 12.6 ppg., rebounding with 6.8 rpg. and is second in steals with six. She is also canning a team-leading 51.1 percent of her field goals (23-of-45). Altenweg is scoring at 11.0 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 24 and steals with 13. Westenbarger is scoring 6.2 ppg. and is second with 13 assists and eight steals. Neal is scoring 7.8 ppg. and grabs 4.4 rpg. and tops the team with six blocked shots. White scores 7.0 ppg. and is second with 6.0 rpg.
Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as nine players, depending on the opponent and matchups. Look for 6'0" junior forward Lindsay Mamula (Clinton/ Massillon Jackson),5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). Mamula is averaging just 1.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in limited action. Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.4 ppg. and is leading the team with seven three-pointers.
The Muskingum Probable Starters --Look for Muskingum Head Coach Beth Fox to start 5'5" junior guard Sarah Duncan and 5'8" senior guard Leslie Kimble in the backcourt along with 5'3" senior point guard Jennifer Huffman. On the inside, look for 5'9" sophomore forward Kortney Kaser and 5'11" sophomore forward Leah Miller to start. Kimble is the top scorer at 11.8 ppg., grabs 4.2 rpg. and shoots 52.2 percent from the floor on 26-of-46 attempts. Huffman is also scoring double digits at 10.6 ppg. and tops the team with 11 assists. Miller is third in scoring at 8.4 ppg. and third in rebounding at 4.0 rpg. Kaser is fourth in scoring at 6.2 ppg. and first with 5.0 rpg. Duncan is scoring 3.8 ppg. and grabbing 3.8 rpg.
Off the bench, look for Coach Fox to play 5'7" junior guard Mindy Workman, 5'10" sophomore guard Crystal Berry, 5'11" sophomore forward Ashley Tarney and 5'7" freshman guard Renee Thatcher. Berry is scoring 4.4 ppg. and grabbing 2.8 rpg. to lead the "bench bunch".

In B-W's Last Game on December 4, 2004 versus Otterbein in Westerville, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 72, Otterbein -- 70 -- In B-W's last game, the Yellow Jackets beat OAC-rival Otterbein College, 72-70, in Westerville in the OAC-opener for each team on December 4. Junior forward Jenn Neal canned a jumper with 12.6 seconds left for the game-winner, and B-W withstood a final three-pointer by the Cardinals that could have won the game. Neal was one of two B-W players in double figures with 13 points. In addition, sophomore forward Michelle White scored a team-high 15 points and tied with freshman forward Cara Shiplett for team-high rebounding honors with eight each.
In Muskingum's Last Game on December 8, 2004 versus Mount Union in New Concord, Ohio: Muskingum -- 77, Mount Union -- 69 -- In Muskingum's last game, the Fighting Muskies improved to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the OAC by beating OAC-rival Mount Union Collge, 77-69, in New Concord on Wednesday. Jennifer Huffman led all scorers with 18 points as she canned six-of-11 floor shots and six-of-seven foul shots. She also passed for four assists, grabbed three rebounds and made a steal. In addition, Holly Gavarkavich came off the bench to score 14 points and Leah Miller had 12 points and five rebounds.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 193-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 278 victories. Harrer is 282-109 in her career with a .721 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
