The Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat OAC-Rival Mt. Union, 73-55, in Alliance

to Improve to 8-4 and 4-1 in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore backup guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) scored 12 points tonight (January 5, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 73-55, at the Timken Physical Education Building in Alliance.

With its win, B-W is now 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC and has won two straight. With its loss, Mt. Union fell to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as 18 points at 35-17 with 1:52 left before halftime when freshman guard Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) scored on a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 35-19.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 23 points at 44-21 with 15:26 left in the game when sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) split a pair of free throws at the 15:26 mark. The Purple Raiders made a late run to cut the lead to 15, but B-W pulled away again.

In addition to Jaworski for B-W, freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) had 11 points and also grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds.

Mt. Union was led by senior forward Ashley Bourdeau who went 11 - of -19 from the floor and scored a game-high 26 points.

B-W next plays on Saturday when it hosts nationally-ranked Wilmington College at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET women's basketball team will travel to Alliance, Ohio to play OAC rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. at the Timken Physical Education Building.

PREGAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its second straight game as it travels to Alliance to resume 2004-2005 Ohio Athletic Conference action against OAC arch-rival Mount Union College.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 7-4 overall and 3-1 OAC record following their 82-57 win against Fransiscan (Iowa) College on December 30 in the consolation game of the Rockford (Ill.) College Holiday Tournament.  B-W lost to third-ranked Wisconsin Oshkosh in the first round, 74-59.
        The Purple Raiders enter the contest with a 3-8 overall and 0-4 OAC mark following their 68-62 win against Grove City (Pa.) College on December 30 in Alliance, Ohio.  The win ended a seven-game losing streak.

The Baldwin-Wallace versus Mount Union All-Time Series Information -- This is the 60th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Mt. Union College in women's basketball.  The Purple Raiders hold the series lead at 32-27.  B-W won both meetings a year ago as they topped the Purple Raiders, 82-59, in Alliance on January 28, 2004 and 82-51 in Berea on December 17, 2003.  The last Mt. Union win came in 2002 when the Purple Raiders beat the Yellow Jackets, 66-63, in Alliance. In the first-ever meeting in 1964-65, B-W won, 39-36.

The Division III National Rankings --  B-W was ranked 20th in the last Division III poll that was released on December 21, 2004 by the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association). The Yellow Jacjers were also listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in the D3hoops.com internet Web site national poll on December 21.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets --  The B-W Probable Starters --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt.  Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside.
Shiplett tops the team in rebounding with 5.3 rpg. and is second in scoring at 10.0 ppg., second in steals with 13. She is also canning 51.2 percent of her field goals (43-of-84). Altenweg is scoring a team-leading 10.1 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 47 and steals with 31. Westenbarger is scoring 6.6 ppg. and is second with 21 assists and third with 12 steals.  Neal is scoring 6.0 ppg. and grabs 3.7 rpg. and tops the team with 11 blocked shots.  White scores 8.5 ppg. and is second with 5.0 rpg.  She tops the team with a 51.3 field goal percentage (39-of-76) and is second on the team with seven blocked shots.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as nine players, depending on the opponent and matchups.  Look for 6'0" junior forward Lindsay Mamula (Clinton/ Massillon Jackson),5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore).  Mamula is averaging 1.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in limited action.  Jaworski is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 8.2 ppg. and leads the team with 18 three-pointers.

The Purple Raider Probable Starters and Bench Players  -- Look for Mount Union  Head Coach Jen Henley to start , 5'4" freshman Ellie Geiger, 5'7" junior Kyla Hogan and 5'9" sophomore Lauren Friedrich in the backcourt.  Up front, look for 6'0" senior Ashley Bourdeau and 5'9" freshman Ashley Ross to start.  Hogan tops the team in scoring at 15.1 ppg. and also tops the team with 17 three-pointers and 56 steals.  She is also second with 28 assists.  Bourdeau is second at 14.9 ppg. and first with 6.3 rpg. She also has 12 assists, 13 blocked shots and 18 steals. Friedrich rounds out the double-figure scorers at 11.7 ppg. She also grabs four rebounds per game and is second with 16 treys.  Ross is scoring 8.1 ppg. and is second with 5.1 rpg. She has 19 assists and 21 steals.  Geiger is starting her third game and averages 2.4 ppg.
        Off the bench, look for Coach Henley to play 5'6" senior guard Jen Brozak, 5'7" junior guard Tana Keller, 5'5" freshman guard Lindsey Shaw and 5'11" freshman forward Jen Moreck.  Brozak has started eight times this year and averages 4.5 ppg. and leads the team with 34 assists. Keller also scores 3.5 ppg.

In B-W's First Game of the Rockford (Ill.) College Tournament on December 29, 2004 versus Third-Ranked The University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh:  UW Oshkosh -- 74, Baldwin-Wallace --  59 --  The Yellow Jackets lost to third-ranked the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, 74-59, in the opening round of the Rockford College Tournament in Rockford, Illinois. It was the third straight loss for B-W against a nationally-ranked opponent and the loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 6-4 overall while the Titans improved to 12-0.   Despite tn the loss, sophomore forward Michelle White led the team with 12 points and six rebounds.  In addition, sophomore forward Jessica Latimer came off the bench  and had a team-high eight rebounds.  B-W led 34-31 at halftime, but was outscored 43-25 in the second half.

In B-W's Second Game: The Consolation Game of the Rockford (Ill.) College Tournament on December 30, 2004 versus Fransiscan (Iowa) University:  Baldwin-Wallace --  82, Fransiscan 57 --  The Yellow Jackets broke a three-game losing streak against Fransiscan (Iowa) University, 82-57, in the consolation game of the Rockford College Holiday Tournament in Rockford, Illinois.  Leading the way for B-W were freshman forward Cara Shiplett and sophomore forward Michelle White each with 12 points.  Junior guard Niki Altenweg chipped in with 10 points, and overall, 11 different players scored points for the Yellow Jackets.  Shiplett also topped the team with six rebounds.

In Mount Union's Last Game on December 30, 2004 versus Grove City (Pa.) in Alliance:  Mount Union --  68, Grove City (Pa.) -- 62  --  In Mount Union's last game, the Purple Raiders beat Grove City of Pennstlvania, 68-62, on December 30 in Alliance.  Mt. Union was led by junior guard Kyla Hogan's game-high 23 points, including making 11-of-12 foul shots. Hogan also had four rebounds, four steals, three assists and two three-pointers.  In addition, senior forward Ashley Bourdeaux had 18 points and agame-high 11 rebounds.  The Purple Raiders took advantage of 31 GCC turnovers to outscore the Wolverines, 30-11, in points scored off turnovers.


Yellow Jacket Chatter 

Michelle White Proves Herself During Holiday Tournaments -- Baldwin-Wallace College sophomore forward Michelle White was named to the all-tournament team at the Rockford (Ill.) College Holiday Tournament last week.  White scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds in two games and led B-W to a third place finish.  Last winter, White was named as the Most Valuable Player of the Franklin (Ind.) College Holiday Tournament as she scored 23 points, grabbed five rebounds and made six steals as B-W won the team title.

Despite its Youth, B-W Has Led at the Half --  The women's basketball team is young and does not include a senior.  It is learning and getting better by the day.   But....... B-W has been ahead (10 times) or tied (once) with each its 11 opponents at halftime.

This is a Young and Talnted Team Who Can Play With the Best in Division III -- By leading 10-of-11 opponents and being tied with the other at halftime, the Yellow Jackets have shown that they have the young talent and ability to stay with some of the best teams in Division III.  The young B-W team has led both second-ranked Capital and third-ranked Wisconsin Oshkosh at the half.

Nikki Altenweg on the Verge of History --  Despite being just a junior, point guard and team captain Nikki Altenweg is on the verge of entering B-W's Top-10 in both assists and steals.  Currently, Altenweg stands 15th in assists with 197 and 13th in steals with 113.  She needs 48 more assists and eight more steals to move into the Top-10 or each catagory.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence -- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years.  B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season.  During that time span, B-W is 193-34 with an .850 winning percentage.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 285 victories.  Harrer is 285-112 in her career with a .718 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
