Improve to 17-5 overall and 13-2 in the OAC
BEREA, OHIO — Freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) scored 14 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds tonight (Wednesday, February 9, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 84-57, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win was B-W’s fifth straight and 11th in its last 12 games.
With its win, B-W is now 17-5 overall and 13-2 in the OAC and remain in a first place tie with Wilmington College. With its loss, Mount Union is now 4-18 overall and 1-14 in the OAC.
B-W held Mount Union scoreless for the first 5:42 of the game as they jumped out to a 14-0 lead. In the first half, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as 17 points at 42-25 with 1:12 left before halftime when sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) scored on a layup. B-W led by as many as 15 points on three separate occasions and held a halftime advantage of 13 points at 42-29. In the second half, B-W built its largest lead of the game of 29 points at 84-55 with :10 remaining when freshman guard Jessica Diaz (Amherst/ Steele) converted on a layup.
Joining Shiplett in double figures for the Yellow Jackets were sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson), who scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) who each scored 11.
Mt. Union was led by Ashley Bourdeau who scored 22 points.
B-W next plays on Saturday, February 12 when it travels to New Concord, Ohio to play OAC-rival Muskingum College in an OAC game at the Muskingum HPER Center at 3:00 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to extend its winning streak to six games a s it hosts OAC arch-rival Mount Union College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 16-5 overall and 12-2 OAC record following their 79-68 win against Otterbein College last Saturday in Berea. The win was B-W's fifth straight and 11th in their last 12 games and kept it in a first place tie with Wilmington College.
The Purple Raiders enter the contest with a 4-17 overall and 1-3 OAC mark following their 62-53 loss to Ohio Northern University on Saturday in Ada. Mt. Union has lost five straight games and nine of its last 10.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Mount Union All-Time Series Information -- This is the 61th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace and Mt. Union in women's basketball. The Purple Raiders hold the series lead at 32-28. B-W won the first meeting between the two teams this season by a score of 73-55 in Alliance on January 5, 2005. B-W won both meetings a year ago as they topped the Purple Raiders, 82-59, in Alliance and 82-51 in Berea. The last Mt. Union win came in 2002 when the Purple Raiders beat the Yellow Jackets, 66-63, in Alliance. In the first-ever meeting in 1964-65, B-W won, 39-36.

The Purple Raider Probable Starters and Bench Players -- Look for Mount Union Head Coach Jen Henley to start , 5'7" junior Tana Keller, 5'7" junior Kyla Hogan and 5'6" senior Jen Brozak the backcourt. Up front, look for 6'0" senior Ashley Bourdeau and 5'9" senior Lauren Friedrich to start. Bourdeau tops the team in scoring at 16.7 ppg, rpg. 5.7 and also tops the team in blocks at 23 . Hogan is second at ppg. at 13.5, third with 4.6 rpg,, second in assists 64 and leads the team in steals with 100. Friedrich is third on the team in scoring at 11.9 and grabs 3.6 rebounds per game and leads the team with 34 treys. Brozak is scoring 4,2 ppg. and is leads the team in assists with 70. Off the bench, look for Henley to play 5'4" freshman guard Ellie Gieger , 5'11", freshaman forward Jen Moreck, 6'1" fresshman forward Alicia Williams, 5'5" freshman Diane Synder and 5'5 sophomore guard Caitlin Carroll. Williams has the top scoring average off the bench at 3.5 ppg. in 14 contests.
In the First Meeting This Season, on Jan. 12, 2005 in Alliance: Baldwin-Wallace -- 73, Mount Union -- 55 -- In the first meeting this season between B-W and Mount Union, on Jan. 12, 2005 in Alliance, the Yellow Jackets beat the Purple Raiders, 73-55, to capture their fourth straight win against Mt. Union. Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua) led the Yellow Jackets with 12 points. In addition to Jaworski for B-W, freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) had 11 points and also grabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds. Mt. Union was led by senior forward Ashley Bourdeau who went 11 - of -19 from the floor and scored a game-high 26 points.

B-W also won its fifth straight game and 11th in its last 12 contests. Leading the way was freshman forward Cara Shiplett with a game-high 19 points. Joining her in double figures were sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski and junior forward Jenn Neal with 14 points each. Neal led the team with seven rebounds.
In Mount Union's Last Game on Feb. 5 versus Ohio Northern in Ada: Ohio Northern -- 62 Mount Union -- 53 -- In Mount Union's last game, the Purple Raiders lost at Ohio Northern University, 62-53, last Saturday (Feb 5) at the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The loss dropped Mt. Union to 4-17 overall and 1-13 in the OAC. Despite the loss, sophomore forward Lauren Friedrich had a game-high 20 points. Also in double figures was junior guard Kyla Hogan with 18 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and eight steals.

Six-Game Winning Streaks -- Baldwin-Wallace will be seeking a third six-game win streak this season when it faces Mt. Union. B-W won six consecutive games on two other occassions: from November 11, 2004 until Dec. 18 and from Dec. 30 through January 22, 2005. The second streak included a 73-55 win at Mt. Union on Jan. 5.
Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 224 career assists and 141 career steals to rank 12th in assists and ninth in steals. Next up on the all-time steal list is ninth-ranked Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150. She needs 21 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list and tie 10th-place Mandy Zolciak (1998-2001), who had 245.
Cheri Harrer is Quickly Approaching 300 Career Wins -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 294 victories. Harrer is 294-113 in 15 seasons at B-W.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets are seeking a ninth straight 20-win campaign in 2004-2005. B-W currently owns a streak of eight straight 20-win seasons. During that time span, B-Ware 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
