in Berea to Remain in First Place in the OAC
BEREA, OHIO — Junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored a game-high 18 points today (Saturday, January 15, 2005) as the 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 93-54, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win was B-W's fifth straight and its 20th consecutive against Marietta.
With its win, B-W is now 11-4 overall and remains in first place in the OAC at 7-1. With its loss, Marietta is now 4-9 overall and 2-6 in the OAC.
In the first half, B-W began the game by going on a 13-0 run spanning 3:20 that was capped by junior forward Jenn Neal's (Mentor) layup. During the run, the Yellow Jackets hit three three-pointers. B-W led by as many as 26 points with 7:08 to play in the period when sophomore forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/Northwest) hit a short jumper to make the score 36-10. B-W hit its first eight three-pointers to start the game and finished the half at 75 percent (nine-of-12) to lead 47-29.
In the second half, B-W expanded its lead out to as many as 44 points with just 5:03 to play when freshman guard Jessica Diaz (Amherst/Marion Steele) hit a three-pointer. Diaz's three capped a 15-1 run that spanned 4:10 and saw B-W take an 87-43 advantage. The Yellow Jackets would only make three more shots from beyond the arc and would finish 12-of-20 for the game.
In addition to Altenweg for B-W, Neal scored 16 points and two other Yellow Jacket players scored nine each. Freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) grabbed a game-high six rebounds.
Marietta was led by Rebecca Tokodi with 14 points and Katie Moriarty with 13.
B-W next plays on Tuesday, January 18 when it hosts Heidelberg College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-4 overall and 6-1 OAC record following their 62-50 win against OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in University Heights on Jan. 12. The victory was B-W's fourth straight and 26th straight against the Blue Streaks.
The Pioneers enter this game with a 4-8 overall and 2-5 OAC record following a 76-64 victory against Mount Union College on Wednesday at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta. The win was Marietta's second in its last three games.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Marietta All-Time Series Information -- This is the 42nd all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Marietta College in women's basketball. The Yellow Jackets hold the series lead, 28-13, including 19 straight wins. B-W defeated Marietta both times they played a year ago: 56-49 in Berea on January 3, 2004 and 62-41 in Marietta on February 7, 2004. In the first-ever meeting in 1981-82, B-W won, 71-48.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The B-W Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt. Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Altenweg tops the team in scoring at 10.3 ppg., and also leads in assists with 55 and steals with 41. Shiplett is second in scoring at 9.4 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 5.4 rpg. and is second in steals with 16. She is also canning a team-leading 52.5 percent of her field goals (53-of-101). Westenbarger is scoring 6.0 ppg. and is second in assists with 25 and also has 13 steals. Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as nine players, depending on the opponent and matchups. Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). The Marietta College Probable Starters and Bench Players -- Look for Marietta Head Coach Vicki Giffin to start 5'5" senior guard Heather Bowman and 5'8" junior Tabi Taylor in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5'9" senior Beth Bakos, 5'9" senior Katie Moriarty and 6'2" senior Rebecca Tokodi to start. Tokodi tops the team in scoring with 12.2ppg. and is second in rebounding with 5.5 rpg. She is also leading the team in field goal percentage at 52.0% (64-of-123). Bakos is second on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg. and pulls down 5.1 rpg. She also leads the team in three pointers with 14. Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets was junior point guard Nikki Altenweg with a career-high 18 points. Jen Neal chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds. Freshmen Cara Shiplett and Stacia Shrider added eight and seven points, respectively, and freshman guard Alyson Cotter topped the Jackets with seven rebounds.

Union College in Marietta, the Pioneers beat the Purple Raiders, 76-64, for their fourth win of the season and second in their last three games. MC also improved its OAC record to 2-5. Rebecca Tokodi scored a team-high 22 points. Justine Pagenhardt scored 20 points. Abby Hess came off the bench to add 10 point for the Pioneers.

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 205 career assists and 123 career steals to rank 14th in assists and 10th in steals. Altenweg is one steal of ninth place Stephanie Fleming (1986-90), who had 124.
The Yellow Jackets Have Led Almost Every Game at Halftime -- The Yellow Jackets have either been ahead or tied at halftime in every game this season. The only game that was tied was with Otterbein (32-32). B-W has also led three nationally-ranked teams at halftime: Capital University (32-28), the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (34-29) and Albion, Mich. (29-26).
The Teams Who Have Beat B-W This Year -- The Yellow Jackets four losses are to teams with a combined 43-8 record and .857 winning percentage. Capital, the previously No.2-ranked team in Division III (until JCU beat the Crusaders last week in Bexley), is 11-1. In addition, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, who is the new No.1 team in Division III, is 15-1; Albion (Mich.) is 12-1; and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University is 5-5 overall.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
