BEREA, OHIO — Freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) scored 12 points and grabbed seven reboundss today (Saturday, January 29, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 68-44, at the Ban Johnson Fieldhouse in Marietta. The win was B-W’s second straight and eighth in its last nine games.
With its win, B-W is now 14-5 overall and 10-2 in the OAC and in second place. With its loss, Marietta is now 7-11 overall and 5-7 in the OAC.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets led by as many as 19 points with 7:31 remaining when sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua) made a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets played suffocating defense as they forced 15 turnovers and only allowed just eight field goals. The Yellow Jackets led at halftime, 32-17.
In the second half, Marietta got as close as 13 points at 32-19 with19:30 left in the game when senior center Rebecca Tokodi scored on a layup. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as 24 points with 9.7 seconds remaining when freshman guard Jessica Diaz (Amherst/ Steele) connected on a pair of free throws.
Joining Westenbarger in double figures were junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) with 12 points, freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) had 11 and freshman guard Allyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior) had 10.
Marietta was led by Tokodi with a game-high 13 points.
B-W next plays on Tuesday, February 1 when it travels OAC-rival Heidelberg College in Tiffin for a 7:30 p.m. game in the Seiberling Gymnasium.

Shiplett is second in scoring at 9.8 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding with 5.1 rpg. and is second in steals with 21. Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 214 career assists and 132 career steals to rank 12th in assists and ninth in steals. Next up on the all-time steal list is Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150. She needs 36 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
