Heights to Remain in First Place in the OAC
BEREA, OHIO — Junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored a career high 18 points tonight (Wednesday, January 12, 2005) as the 21st-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 62-50, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights. The win was B-W's fourth straight and its 26th consecutive victory against JCU dating back to the 1992-93 season.
With its win, B-W is now 10-4 overall and remains in first place in the OAC at 6-1. With its loss, JCU is now 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the OAC.
In the first half, John Carroll jumped out to an early six point advantage at 15-9, at the 11:04 mark when junior forward Caitlin Hubach scored on a jumper. The Yellow Jackets would respond with a 20-2 run over the final 10 minutes of the first half. The run resulted with 29-17 halftime lead for the Yellow Jackets. The Blue Streaks did not score a a single point during the final 9:15 of the first half, as they shot just 29.6% (8 - of - 27) from the floor in the first stanza.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets played dominating defense and never trailed. John Carroll never got closer than ten points at the 18:53 mark when junior guard and OAC leading scorer Shalya Bell scored on a layup to make the score 29-19. The B-W's largest lead was 20 points with 6:59 left, when freshman forward Allyson Cottter (Salem) scored on jumper to make the score 53-33. John Carroll made a late run and outscored the Yellow Jackets 17-9 over the final six minutes, but could not overcome the large Yellow Jacket lead and B-W went onto win 62-50.
In addition to Altenweg for B-W, junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) had 12 points and freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/Nothwest) had eight.
John Carroll was led by Bell who had 18 points.
B-W next plays on Saturday, January 15 when it hosts Marietta College at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 3:00 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its fourth straight game as it faces Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in Berea. The Yellow Jackets are currently all alone in first place in the OAC with a 5-1 record. Capital University and Wilmington College are tied for second at 4-1 in league play.
B-W enters this game with a 9-4 overall record following its 84-56 win against defending NCAA Division III national champion and previously OAC-unbeaten Wilmington in Berea on Jan. 8. The win was B-W's third straight.
The Blue Streaks enter this game with a 6-5 overall and 3-3 OAC record following a 68-59 victory against Marietta College at the DeCarlo Center. The win was JCU's second straight and third in its last four games. The game with Marietta was originally scheduled to be played at Marietta, but flooding along the Ohio River and in Marietta caused a switch in venue.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus John Carroll All-Time Series Information -- This is the 46th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University in women's basketball. The Yellow Jackets hold the series lead at 28-17, including wins in each of the last 25 meetings. B-W also won both meetings a year ago as they topped the Blue Streaks, 58-42, in University Heights on January 14, 2004 and 68-52 in Berea on February 18, 2004. In the first-ever meeting in 1975-76, John Carroll won, 57-56.
The Yellow Jacket Probable Starters and Bench -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt. Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Shiplett is second on the team in scoring at 9.5 ppg., first in rebounding with 5.5 rpg. and is second in steals with 15. She is also canning a team-leading 53.3 percent of her field goals (49-of-92). Altenweg is first in scoring at 9.7 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 54 and steals with 38. Westenbarger is scoring 6.3 ppg., is second with 25 assists and third with 13 steals. Neal is scoring 6.4 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg. and tops the team with 13 blocked shots. Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as seven players, depending on the opponent and matchups. Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). Jaworski is tied for third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.3 ppg. and leads the team with 20 three-pointers.
The John Carroll University Probable Starters and Bench Players -- Look for Wilmington Head Coach Kristie Maravalli to start 5"7" junior guard Shayla Bell and 5'6" senior guard Amy Esser in the backcourt. Up front, look for 5'10" junior forward Meghan Banks, 6'1" junior forward Caitlin Hubach and 6'0" senior forward Meagan Heller to start. Bell tops the Blue Streaks in scoring at 18.5 ppg. and is second with 5.5 rpg. She is third with 14 steals and has gone to the foul line 72 times (56-of-72 for 77.8 percent). Heller is second in scoring at 12.4 ppg. and tops the team with 7.0 rpg. She is shooting 47.7 percent from the floor (52-of-109) and 73.2 percent from the foul line (30-of-41). Banks is scoring 5.3 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg. and also shoots well from the foul line at 74.9 percent (32-of-43). Esser is the playmaker who leads the team with 28 assists, scores 2.0 ppg. and is second with 15 steals. Huback scores 3.0 ppg. and grabs 3.1 rpg.
Off the bench, look for coach Maravalli to play 5'5" sophomore guard Jessica Gibbons, 5'7" sophomore guard Mary Gilloon, 5'7" junior guard Mary Hladky, and 5'10" senior guard Amanda Karel. Gibbons, who has started seven games, scores 7.6 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg., is first with 26 steals and has canned a team-leading 17 three-pointers. Gilloon scores 3.7 ppg. and has nine three's, and Hladky adds 3.5 ppg.
In B-W's Last Game on January 8, 2005 versus Wilmington in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 84, Wilmington -- 56-- In B-W's last game, an 84-56 win last Saturday against Wilmington College in Berea, the Yellow Jackets moved into first place all alone. B-W led from start to finish and tied its all-time season series with the Quakers at 8-8. Freshman back up guard Stacia Shrider led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with a career-high 11 points and sophomore backup forward Jessica Latimer had 10 points and six rebounds. The trio of freshman Ashley Westenbarger, junior center Jenn Neal and backup guard Kelly Williams each scored nine points. Sophomore forward Michelle White scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. B-W outrebounded the Quakers, 54-35.
In John Carroll's Last Game on January 8 versus Marietta in University Heights: John Carroll -- 68, Marietta -- 59 -- In JCU's last game, a 68-59 win against Marietta last Saturday in University Heights, the Blue Streaks won for the second straight time and third time in their last four games. Junior swingplayer Shayla Bell led JCU with 17 points and eight rebounds. She was joined in double figures by junior guard Mary Hladky with 11 points off the bench and senior forward Meagan Heller had 10 points and seven rebounds. JCU raced out to a 35-19 lead at halftime and then held off the Pioneers in the second half.

Nikki Altenweg is Approaching the All-Time Assist and Steal Lists -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 204 career assists and 120 career steals to rank 14th in assists and 11th in steals. Altenweg is one steals shy of Kim Stuart (1986-90), who had 121 steals, and five shy of ninth place Stephanie Fleming (1986-90), who had 124.
The Yellow Jackets Have Led Almost Every Game at Halftime -- The Yellow Jackets have either been ahead or tied at halftime in every game this season. The only game that was tied was with Otterbein (32-32). B-W has also led three nationally-ranked teams at halftime: Capital University (32-28), the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (34-29) and Albion, Mich. (29-26).
The Teams Who Have Beat B-W This Year -- The Yellow Jackets four losses are to teams with a combined 42-7 record and .857 winning percentage. Capital, the previously No.2-ranked team in Division III (until JCU beat the Crusaders last week in Bexley), is 10-1. In addition, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, who is the new No.1 team in Division III, is 15-0; Albion (Mich.) is 12-1; and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University is 5-5 overall.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 193-34 with an .850 winning percentage.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 287 victories. Harrer is 287-112 in her career with a .719 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
