The Baldwin-Wallace College Women Defeat John Carroll, 70-59, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO —  Junior guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored a career-high 20 points tonight (Wednesday, January 26, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Cleveland cross-town and Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll University, 70-59, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, B-W is now 13-5 overall and remains in second place in the OAC at 9-2 just a half game behind first-place Wilmington College. With its loss, John Carroll is now 7-10 overall and 4-7 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets built an early six-point lead at 10-4 with 13:06 left when junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor) tipped in a missed jumper by sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua).  The Blue Streaks would then go on a 14-3 run spanning the next 4:43 capped by junior forward Meghan Banks' 14-foot jumper to give JCU a five-point lead, its biggest of the game at 18-13 with 8:23 remaining in the first half.  The Yellow Jackets would battle back to tie the game for the fifth and final time in the first half at 26-26 when Altenweg hit a short jumper with just 1:19 left to play in the first stanza.  A three-pointer from senior guard Amanda Karel with 16 seconds remaining would wipe out two free throws made by Neal giving JCU a 29-28 lead, but B-W would answer when sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) knocked down a four-foot jump shot with 2.21 seconds left to give the Yellow Jackets a 30-29, halftime lead.

In the second half, B-W went on an early 14-3 run over the first 8:57 capped by a three-pointer from Jaworski giving the Yellow Jackets a 48-32 lead.  B-W stretched its lead out to 19, its biggest of the game with the fourth and final time coming with just 5:15 remaining in the game when freshman forward Alyson Cotter (Salem) knocked down a pair of free-throws to give the Yellow Jackets a 64-45 lead.  The final five minutes would allow a 14-6 John Carroll run, but it wasn't enough as B-W went on to win, 70-59.

In addition to Altenweg for B-W, Neal and freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) chipped in with 14 and 12 points, respectively.  Sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

John Carroll was led by junior guard Shayla Bell with 18 points.  Banks was also in double figures for the Blue Streaks, scoring 15.  Senior forward Meagan Heller scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

B-W next plays on Saturday, January 29 when it travels to Marietta, Ohio to play the Pioneers from Marietta College at 3:00 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in Berea.  B-W ended a six-game winning streak last Saturday and needs a win to remain in OAC regular season title contention.  The Yellow Jackets also beat JCU in University Heights earlier this season and has won 26 straight games against its biggest rival.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 12-5 overall and 8-2 OAC record following their 75-56 loss at OAC arch-rival and defending NCAA Division III national champion Wilmington College last Saturday at the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington.  B-W's six-game winning streak had tied a season-high.
        JCU enters this game with a 7-9 overall and 4-6 OAC record following its 68-65 loss at Marietta College last Saturday.  The Blue Streaks have lost three straight games and four of their past five overall.  JCU plays better away from home with a 5-2 record away from University Heights.

The OAC Standings --  The Yellow Jackets currently stand in second place at 8-2 and one-half game behind first place Wilmington (8-1) and one games ahead of third place Capital University (7-3).  B-W does not play Wilmington again and ends its regular season in Bexley on Feb. 19.

The Baldwin-Wallace versus John Carroll All-Time Series Information -- This is the 47th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and John Carroll University in women's basketball.  The Yellow Jackets hold the series lead at 29-17, including wins in each of the last 26 meetings. B-W won the first meeting of the season in Univeristy Heights  on January 12 by a socre of 62-50. B-W also won both meetings a year ago as they topped the Blue Streaks, 58-42,  in University Heights on January 14, 2004 and 68-52 in Berea on February 18, 2004.  In the first-ever meeting in 1975-76, JCU won, 57-56.

The Yellow Jacket Probable Starters and Bench --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt.  Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside.  Altenweg is first in scoring at 10.5 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 62 and steals with 46.  She has also canned 19 three-pointers. Shiplett is second on the team in scoring at 9.6 ppg., first in rebounding with 5.2 rpg. and is second in steals with 19. She is also canning a team-leading 53.1 percent of her field goals (68-of-128). Westenbarger is scoring 6.1 ppg., is second with 37 assists and third with 17 steals. She has also canned 19 treys.  Neal is scoring 7.1 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg. and tops the team with 16 blocked shots.  White scores 7.3 ppg., is second with 4.6 rpg. and shoots 51,3 percent from the floor.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as seven players, depending on the opponent and matchups.  Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore).  Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.9 ppg. and leads the team with 27 three-pointers.

The John Carroll University Probable Starters and Bench Players  -- Look for Wilmington  Head Coach Kristie Maravalli to start 5"7" junior guard Shayla Bell, 5'5" sophomore Jessica Gibbons and 5'7" guard Mary Hladky in the backcourt.  On the inside, look for 6'1" junior forward Caitlin Hubach and 6'0" senior forward Meagan Heller to start.  Bell tops the Blue Streaks in scoring at 19.0 ppg. and is second with 5.3 rpg.  She is third with 20 steals and has gone to the foul line 96 times (74-of-96 for 77.1 percent). Gibbons has nade eight starts and scores 7.3 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg, has passed for 34 assists and has a team-leading 32 steals and 23 three-pointers.  Hladky scores 3.8 ppg. and has started four times, including last Saturday at Marietta. Heller is second in scoring at 13.1 ppg. and tops the team with 7.1 rpg. She is shooting 47.3 percent from the floor (78-of-165) and 75.8 percent from the foul line (50-of-68). Huback scores 3.3 ppg. and grabs 3.5 rpg. and has started nine games.
        Off the bench, look for coach Maravalli to play 5'6" senior guard Amy Esser, 5'7" sophomore guard Mary Gilloon, 5'10" junior forward Meghan Banks and 5'10" senior guard Amanda Karel.  Esser scores 1.7 ppg.  Banks has the top bench average at 5.2 ppg. and grabs 4.4 rpg.

In the First Meeting Between B-W and JCU on Jan. 12, 2005 in Berea:  B-W -- 62, John Carroll -- 50 -- In the first meeting this season between B-W and JCU, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Blue Streaks, 62-50, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights on Jan. 12.  In victory, junior point guard Nikki Altenweg led the offense with a season and career-high 18 points.  Junior forward Jenn Neal also chipped in with 12 points and canned five-of-eight shots from the floor.  Junior guard Shayla Bell led JCU with 18 points.

In B-W's Last Game on January 22, 2005 versus Wilmington in Wilmington:  Wilmington -- 75, B-W -- 56--   In B-W's last game, a 75-56 loss at OAC arch-rival Wilmington College last Saturday, the Yellow Jackets lost an OAC showdown for first place. With its loss, B-W fell to 8-2 in the OAC while Wilmington fell to 7-2 in OAC play.  Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by sophomore backup guard Steffani Jaworski with 18 points. Sophomore backup forward Jessica latimer grabbed a game and career-high 11 rebounds.

In John Carroll's Last Game on  January 22 versus Marietta in Marietta:  Marietta -- 68, B-W -- 65 -- In JCU's last game, a 68-65 loss at Marietta College last Saturday, the Blue Streaks dropped their third straight game and slipped to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the OAC.  Despite the loss, junior guard/ forward Shayla Bell was the lone JCU player in double figures with 23 points.

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 213 career assists and 128 career steals to rank 14th in assists and ninth in steals.  Next up on the all-time steal list is Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150.  She needs 36 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years.  B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season.  During that time span, B-W is 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 290 victories.  Harrer is 290-113 in 15 seasons at B-W.
