The Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Heidelberg, 80-47, in Berea For Sixth

Straight Win and Remain in First Place in the OAC

BEREA, OHIO —  Freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds tonight (Tuesday, January 18, 2005) as the 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 80-47, at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  The win was B-W's sixth straight and its third consecutive against Heidelberg.

With its win, B-W is now 12-4 overall and remains in first place in the OAC at 8-1.  With its loss, Heidelberg is now 8-7 overall and 3-6 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets built an early five-point lead at 11-6 with 16:14 left when freshman forward Cara Shiplett scored her third basket on an out-of-bounds play. The Student Princes then closed to within two points of B-W at 15-13 at the 11:48 mark before the Jackets went on an 11-0 run and held Heidelberg scoreless to build a 26-13 advantage with 8:17 left before intermission when freshman forward Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) scored on a putback.  B-W then built its biggest lead at 19 points at 43-24 with 58.94 seconds before halftime when freshman guard Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) made a pair of foul shots.  Heidelberg then scored the last five points of the first stanza and the Yellow Jackets led at halftime, 43-29.

In the second half, B-W scored the first seven points of the stanza to break it open and led 51-29 with 16:08 left when Shiplett canned a foul shot.  B-W then built its biggest lead at 34 points at 72-38 with 7:49 left in the game when Westenbarger scored on a jumper.

In addition to Shiplett for B-W, junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) had 11 points.  Overall, 14 of 15 Yellow Jackets who saw action scored points.

Heidelberg was led by senior guard Rachel Babione with a game-high 20 points, including 15 in the first half, and freshman guard Amanda Campbell had 14 markers.

B-W next plays on Saturday, January 22 when it travels to Wilmington, Ohio and will play for first place against the Wilmington College Quakers at the Fred Raizk Arena at 3:00 p.m.

PREGAME NOTES -- The 22nd-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its sixth straight game when it faces Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College in Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  A win would tie an earlier B-W season-high six-game winning streak.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with an 11-4 overall and 7-1 OAC record following their 93-54 win against Marietta College on Saturday in Berea.  B-W has won five straight games and is in first place in the OAC and one game ahead of both Capital University (6-1) and Wilmington College (6-1).  Capital and Wilmington play each other tomorrow night (Jan. 19).  During its streak, B-W is outscoring opponents by 24.4 points per game.
        The Student Princes enter this game 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC following their 59-44 loss against Ohio Northern University in Ada last Saturday. Heidelberg has lost two straight games and three of its last four contests.

The Baldwin-Wallace versus Heidelberg All-Time Series Information -- This is the 57th all-time meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Heidelberg College in women's basketball.  B-W holds the series lead at 32-24.  B-Wwon two of three meetings with the Student Princes a year ago.  The Student Princes beat B-W in Tiffin, 82-64, on Jan. 20, 2004, and then B-W beat Heidelberg at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, 66-53, on Feb. 4, 2004 and 84-58, on Feb. 24, 2004 in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament.  The first ever meeting between the two teams occurred in 1965-66.  B-W won that game, 59-37.

The Division III National Rankings --  B-W was ranked in a tie for 22nd in the last WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III national poll and was listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in the D3hoops.com internet web site Division III national poll.  The new poll for each group will be released on Jan. 18.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets --  The B-W Probable Starters --  Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westen-barger (McComb) in the back-court.  Look for 5'9" sophomore Mich-elle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside.  Altenweg currently tops the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg., assists with 57 and steals with 44. Shiplett is second on the team in scoring at 9.3 ppg., first in rebounding with 5.2 rpg. and is second in steals with 17.  She is also canning a team-leading 53.3 percent of her field goals (57-of-107).  Westenbarger is scoring 6.0 ppg. and is second with 31 assists and third in steals with 16.  Neal is scoring 7.4 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg. and tops the team with 14 blocked shots.  White scores 7.9 ppg. and is second with 4.9 rpg.
        Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as seven players, depending on the opponent and matchups.  Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore).  Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.3 ppg. and leads the team with 23 three-pointers.

The Heidelberg College Probable Starters and Bench Players  -- Look for Heidelberg College  Head Coach Karen McConnell to start 5'10" senior Rachel Babione and 5'6" freshman Amanda Campbell in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5'10" senior forward Holly Brodman, 5'10" junior forward Katie Borngen, and 5'11" junior forward Sharonda Willis to get the call.  Babione is the tops scorer at 12.1 ppg. She also grabs 5.1 rpg. and has 21 treys, 35 assists and 40 steals.  Campbell is second in scoring at 10.8 ppg., grabs 6.5 rpg. with 17 treys, 25 assists and 31 steals.  Willis is tied for third in scoring at 8.3 ppg., is first with 9.2 rpg. and has blocked 10 shots.  She also has 27 steals.  Brodman scores 8.3 ppg., grabs 6.0 rpg. and has canned 22-of-25 foul shots for 88 percent. Borgen scores 5.7 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg.
        Off  the bench, look for Coach  McConnell to play 5'9" sophomore guard Kyle Davison, 5'8" freshman guard Stephanie Sample, 5'10" freshman forward Hollie Knott, and 5'8" freshman guard Brittany Briem.   Davison is the top scorer off the bench at 4.4 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game on January 15, 2005 versus Marietta in Berea:  Baldwin-Wallace --  93, Marietta --  54-- In B-W's last game, the Yellow Jackets defeated Marietta College, 93-54, on Saturday, January 15 at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea to improve to 11-4 overall, remain in first place in the OAC with a 6-1.  It was the fifth straight win for the Yellow Jackets.  Leading the way fo B-W was junior point guard Nikki Altenweg who tied a career-high with 18 points.  Junior forward Jenn Neal joined her in double figures with 16 points as she canned seven-of-10 shots from the floor.  Freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger scored six points, grabbed a game-high six rebounds and passed for a game-high six assists.  B-W shot 56.5 percent from the floor for the game, including 60 percent from three-point range and made its first eight three-pointers.

In Heidelberg's Last Game on January  15, 2005 vs. Ohio Northern in Ada:  Heidelberg--44, Ohio Northern-59-  In Heidelberg's last game, the Student Princes lost 59-44 to Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center in Ada on January 15 to drop to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the OAC.  Despite the loss, freshman guard Amanda Campbell scored  11 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Junior forward Sharonda Willis grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and freshman guard Stephanie Tanner chipped in with nine points.

The Last Meeting:  On Tuesday, February 24, 2004 in Berea in OAC Quarterfinals:  B-W--84, Heidelberg--58-- In the last meeting between B-W and Heidelberg, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Student Princes 84-58 in the quarterfinals of the 2004 OAC Tournament at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.  In the victory, B-W was led by graduated senior All-American forward and current assistant coach Erika Schultz with 14 points and graduated senior guard Karissa Kusick with 10 points.  Current junior point guard Nikki Altenweg scored 11 points and had a team-high seven assists.  The Yellow Jackets shot 50.8 percent from the field, including eight three-pointers.  In addition, B-W played stellar defense in forcing the Student Princes to shoot 36.7 percent from the field and committed 22 turnovers.


Yellow Jacket Chatter 

Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 207 career assists and 126 career steals to rank 14th in assists and ninth in steals.  Next up on the all-time steal list is Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150.  She needs 39 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list.

The Yellow Jackets Have Led Almost Every Game at Halftime  -- The Yellow Jackets have either been ahead or tied at halftime in every game this season.  The only game that was tied was with Otterbein (32-32).  B-W has also led three nationally-ranked teams at halftime:  Capital University (32-28), the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (34-29) and Albion, Mich. (29-26).

The Teams Who Have Beat B-W This Year --  The Yellow Jackets four losses are to teams with a combined 49-10 record and .829 winning percentage.  Capital, the previously No. 2-ranked team in Division III (until JCU beat the Crusaders last week in Bexley), is 12-2.  In addition, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, who is the new No.1 team in Division III, is 16-1; Albion (Mich.) is 15-1; and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University is 6-6 overall.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years.  B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002.  The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.

Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season.  During that time span, B-W is 194-34 with an .850 winning percentage.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 289 victories.  Harrer is 289-112 in her career with a .721 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
