BEREA, OHIO — Junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) scored 13 points tonight (Saturday, January 29, 2005) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 72-44, at the Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin. The win was B-W’s third straight and ninth in its last 10 games.
With its win, B-W is now 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the OAC and in second place. With its loss, Heidelberg is now 10-9 overall and 5-8 in the OAC.
In the first half, after Heidelberg took a brief 2-0 lead, led by Altenweg, B-W went on a 15-0 run to lead 15-2 with 13:56 remaining before halftime. The Yellow Jackets led in the first half by as many as 27 points at 36-9 with 2:40 left before the intermission when sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) capped a 12-0 run with a layup. B-W led at halftime, 40-16.
Heidelberg opened the second half by outscoring B-W 16-6 to get as close as 46-32 with less than 13 minutes remaining in the game, but the Yellow Jackets countered with its own 16-3 run and led by as many as 30 points in coasting to their victory.
Joining Altenweg in double figures for the Yellow Jackets was sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan) with 11 points.
Heidelberg was led by freshman guard Amanda Campbell with 13 points and senior guard Rachel Babione had 11 markers.
B-W next plays on Saturday, February 5 when it hosts OAC-rival and third place Otterbein College in a key OAC game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 14-5 overall and 10-2 OAC record following their 68-44 win against Marietta College on Saturday in Marietta. B-W has won two straight games and is one game behind first place Wilmington College (11-1) in the OAC Standings. B-W also is one game ahead of third place Otterbein College (9-3), who comes to Berea on Saturday to play B-W.
The Student Princes of Heidelberg College enter this game 10-8 overall and 5-7 in the OAC following their 81-53 victory against Ohio Northern University on Saturday in Tiffin at Seiberling. The win was Heidelberg's second in its last three games.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Heidelberg All-Time Series Information -- This is the 58th all-time meeting between B-W and Heidelberg in women's basketball. B-W holds the series lead at 33-24. The Yellow Jacktes won the first meeting of the year, 80-47, in Berea, on January 18, 2005. B-Wwon two of three meetings with the Student Princes a year ago. The Student Princes beat B-W in Tiffin, 82-64, on Jan. 20, 2004, and then B-W beat Heidelberg at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, 66-53, on Feb. 4, 2004 and 84-58, on Feb. 24, 2004 in the quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament. Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The B-W Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Alten-weg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the back-court. Look for 5'9" sophomore Mich-elle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Altenweg currently tops the team in scoring at 10.5 ppg., assists with 66 and steals with 51. Shiplett is second on the team in scoring at 9.8 ppg., first in rebounding with 4.9 rpg. and is secpond in steals with 22. She is also canning a team-leading .528 percent of her field goals (76-of-144). Westenbarger is scoring 6.1 ppg. and is second with 39 assists and third in steals with 18. Neal is scoring 7.7 ppg. and grabs 4.1 rpg. and tops the team with 18 blocked shots. White scores 7.1 ppg. and is second with 4.7 rpg.
Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as seven players, depending on the opponent and matchups. Look for 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/Padua), 5'4" sophomore guard Kelly Williams (Canfield), 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local), 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore). Jaworski is third on the team in scoring, averaging 8.3 ppg. and leads the team with 29 three-pointers.
The Heidelberg College Probable Starters and Bench Players -- Look for Heidelberg College Head Coach Karen Mc-Connell to start 5'10" senior Rachel Babione and 5'6" freshman Amanda Campbell in the backcourt. Also look for 5'7" freshman guard Stephanie Tanner, 5'8" freshman guard Steph-anie Sample and 5'10" junior forward Katie Borngen to get the call. Babione is the top scorer at 12.9 ppg. She also grabs 5.4 rpg. and leads the team with 30 treys, 45 assists and 50 steals. Campbell is second in scoring at 12.6 ppg., grabs 7.3 rpg. with 25 treys, 33 assists and 42 steals. Nikki Altenweg is Among the Top All-Time Assist Markers and Steal Leaders -- Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg currently has 216 career assists and 133 career steals to rank 12th in assists and ninth in steals. Next up on the all-time steal list is Holly Koepp (1999-2003) who had 150. She needs 36 more assists to crack the Top-10 on that list.
OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
