The Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Franciscan (Iowa), 82-57, to Win

the Consolation Game at Rockford (Ill.) Tourney

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) and freshman forward Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) each scored 12 points today (December 30, 2004) as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Franciscan (Iowa) University, 82-57, in the consolation game at Rockford College Tournament in Rockford, Illinois. The win ended a three-game Yellow Jacket losing streak, all to nationally-ranked opponents.

With its win, B-W improved to 7-4 overall and next plays on January 5 when it resumes Ohio Athletic Conference play against Mount Union College in Alliance. With its defeat, Franciscan fell to 4-9.

In the first half, Franciscan led by as many as three points before B-W took its first lead at 12-11 when sophomore backup point guard Kelly Williams (Canfield) connected on a three-pointer at the 13:26 mark. Williams' trey spurred a 27-3 run that helped B-W to lead by as many as 22 points at 36-14 with 2:41 left in the first half when junior starting point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) stole the ball and scored on a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 40-23.

In the second half, B-W increased its lead to as many as 29 points at 76-47 with 4:44 left in the game when freshman guard Alyson Cotter (Salem) made a pair of foul shots. The closest that Franciscan got to B-W after that point was 23 points at 80-57 with 1:49 remaining.

In addition to White and Shiplett's scoring for B-W, Altenweg had 10 markers. Shiplett also led B-W in rebounding with six. Franciscan was led by senior forward Melissa Harden scored 17 points and junior backup forward Megan Beelman scored 14 points.
