The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to start the 2004-05 season with a victory over Case Western Reserve University in the first round of the Greater Cleveland Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Notre Dame College of Ohio. B-W will try to defend the title it won last year when it defeated NDCO in the first round and Case in the championship game.
The Yellow Jackets, 24-3 overall and 13-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference a year ago, return nine letterwinners and two starters from a year ago. B-W will be looking to keep alive a streak of eight straight seasons with 20 or more wins, to regain the OAC title and return to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
CWRU is coming off a season in which it finished 10-15 overall and is under the direction of first-year Head Coach Jacki Windon. The Spartans return 11 letterwinners and three starters as they hope to be competitive in the tough University Athletic Association.
The Yellow Jacket Outlook -- B-W does not have a senior and will be led by 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 6'2" junior forward Lindsay Mamula (Clinton/ Massillon Jackson) and 6'0" junior forward Jenn Neal (Mentor). Altenweg will start at the point and was the team’s fifth leading scorer last season as she canned 41 percent of her field goals and averaged 6.6 points per game. Altenweg also led the OAC in assists with 96 and assist-to-turnover ratio and led the team in steals with 64. For her efforts, she was named honorable mention All-OAC. Mamula started in 16 games a year ago and averaged 6.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. This year, she will begin the season coming off the bench. In addition, Mamula was second on the team in blocked shots with 15. Neal came off the bench last year and will start this year. She averaged 4.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while recovering from off-season knee surgery. Neal is healthy now, and that should be a BIG plus for Harrer and the Jackets.
Joining Altenweg in the starting backcourt will be 5'10" freshman Ashley Westenbarger (McComb). Westenbarger is a solid perimeter shooter and defender and gives Harrer added height in the backcourt. Joining Neal in the starting lineup on the inside will be 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson) and 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest). White is the top returning scorer at 7.1 ppg. and rebounder with 3.8 rpg. as has the ability to be dominant both inside and on the perimeter.
In addition to Mamula coming off the bench this year, look for Harrer to play 5'4" sophomore Kelly Williams (Canfield/ 2.7 ppg. with 42 assists and 39 steals), 5'8" sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn/ 3.2 ppg. and 3.2 rpg. in 24 games) and 5'6" sophomore guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma Padua/ 2.7 ppg. and 10 three-pointers in 23 contests) as well as 5'10" freshman guard/ forward Alyson Cotter (Salem/ Senior), 5'11" freshman forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5'7" sophomore guard Kristin Matushevski (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) and 5'9" freshman forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local).
The key for the Yellow Jackets is gaining experience. This may be one of the youngest teams in Harrer's 15 years at B-W, and may also turn out to be one of her most talented. Only time will tell.
The CWRU Outlook --Look for first-year Head Coach Jacki Windon to start the 5'7" senior Keesha Allen, 5'7" junior Amber Hammell and 5'8" sophomore Dana Dempsey in the backcourt and 6'0" junior Andrea Haylett and 5'10" junior Carmen Rowan at the forward positions. Allen was a second-team All-UAA pick a year ago when she played in 18 games and averaged 11.4 ppg., 6.0 rpg. and led the team with 77 assists and 62 steals. Hammell, who started just eight games, averaged 4.6 ppg. Dempsey played in 24 of 25 games last year and came off the bench to score 4.4 ppg. and can 14 three-pointers. Haylett earned honorable mention All-UAA accolades a year ago when she started 20 games and averaged 8.6 ppg. and 5.5 rpg. in 22 total contests. Rowan started 17 contests and played in all 25 and averaged 5.8 ppg. and 4.9 rpg.
