BEREA, OHIO -- The fourth-ranked Capital University women's basketball team defeated 20th-ranked and Ohio Athletic Conference arch-rival Baldwin-Wallace College, 56-52, today (December 18, 2004) at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.
Capital was led by junior guard Kati Todd with 18 points, including three three-pointers. In addition, junior guard Sara Heitkamp scored 14 points and made six steals.
Junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and sophomore forward Michelle White (Hudson) led the Yellow Jackets with 10 points a piece.
With its victory, Capital stayed unbeaten and improved to 9-0 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the OAC. B-W, now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the OAC, ended a six-game winning streak.
In the first half, B-W opened with four quick points before Capital scored 12 unanswered points to take a 12-4 advantage with 13:05 left before halftime when Heitkamp made a steal and scored on a layup. B-W then scored nine straight points, capped by a three-pointer by Altenweg, to lead 13-12 with 10:48 left in the stanza. The game remained close the rest of the half with B-W leading at the intermission, 32-28.
In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 11 points at 45-34 with 12:52 left in the game when freshman guard Alyson Cotter (Salem) canned a three-pointer. Capital then went on a 18-0 run to take the lead at 3:57 when freshman forward Tiffany Withers grabbed an offensive rebound and made a jumper.
The Yellow Jackets next play on Monday, December 20 in Albion, Michigan against 11th-ranked Albion College at 6:00 p.m.
In addition, B-W will also play on Wednesday, December 29 when they travel to Rockford, Illinois and will play the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh in the first round of the Rockford Holiday Tournament at 6:00 p.m. The consolation (2:00 p.m.) and championship (4:00 p.m.) games will be played the next day.

This is a key game for both teams. A year ago, B-W and Capital tied for the OAC regular-season title.
The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 6-1 overall and 3-0 OAC record following a 67-45 win against Ohio Northern University in Ada on Wednesday (Dec. 15). B-W has won six straight games after a season-opening loss.
The Crusaders are 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the OAC following their 86-64 win December 11 against Mount Union College at the Capital Center in Bexley.
The Baldwin-Wallace versus Capital All-Time Series Information -- The Baldwin-Wallace College and Capital University women's basketball teams have met 45 times previously in women's basketball with the Crusaders holding a 32-13 series advantage. The Yellow Jackets won the last meeting with Capital, 76-73, on February 14, 2004 in Bexley. The Crusader beat B-W, 63-61, on January 10, 2004 in Berea. In the last 16 meetings, B-W has won 13 times. The Yellow Jacket Probable Starters and Players Who Will Come Off the Bench and Play -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt. On the inside, look for Harrer to start 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson) and 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) at the forward positions and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) at the center position.
Shiplett tops the team in scoring at 11.6 ppg., rebounding with 6.3 rpg. and is tied for second with in steals with eight. She is also canning a team-leading 51.6 percent of her field goals (32 -of-62). Altenweg is scoring at 11.0 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 31 and steals with 20. Westenbarger is scoring 7.4 ppg. and is second with 17 assists and tied for second with eight steals. Neal is scoring 6.6 ppg. and grabs 3.4 rpg. and tops the team with seven blocked shots. Look for 5'6" junior forward Sara Heitkamp, 5'8" junior guard Kati Todd and 5'3" sophomore guard Kate Leopard in the backcourt. Heitkamp, who is one of the best all-around players in the OAC, leads the team in scoring with 17.6 ppg, is grabbing 6.5 rpg. and tops the OAC with 32 steals. Lilly is scoring 12.0 ppg., leads the Crusaders in rebounding at 7.4 rpg. and cans 59 percent of her field goal opportunities. Todd is tied with Lilly for second in scoring at 12.0 ppg. and has 24 assists. Leopard is scoring 9.4 ppg. and is an outside threat as she has canned 19 three-pointers. Boyer is scoring 4.3 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg. In B-W's Last Game on December 15, 2004 versus Ohio Northern in Ada, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 67, ONU -- 45 -- The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the OAC with a 67-45 victory against Ohio Northern University at the ONU Sports Center in Ada on Wednesday. Leading the way for B-W was Ashley Westenbarger who had 15 markers. Joining her in double figures was Cara Shiplett who had ten points and grabbed a team high five rebounds. The Yellow Jackets shot 50.0 percent from the field for the game (26-of-52) and 62.5 percent from behind the three point arc (10-of-16).
In Capital's Last Game on December 11 versus Mount Union in Bexley, Ohio: Capital -- 86, Mount Union -- 64 in Bexley -- The fourth-ranked Crusaders remained unbeaten at 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the OAC with an 86-64 victory against Mount Union College at the Capital Center in Bexley. Junior guard Sara Heitkamp led the way with 23 points and a game-high seven assists. Junior forward Jennifer Lilly had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Crusaders shot 50.8 percent from the field. (31-of-61) and 50.0 percent from "three-point land" (six-of-12).

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 201-35 with an .851 winning percentage.
