B-W Beats Ohio Northern, 80-62, in Ada

Senior forward Holly Koepp (Lorain) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds tonight as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated rival Ohio Northern University, 80-62, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the ONU Sports Center in Ada.

With the win, B-W improves to 11-1 overall, 4-1 in the OAC and is ranked 10th nationally in Division III.  With its loss, ONU fell to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the OAC.

Joining Koepp in double figures were senior guard Sarah Gordon (Wooster) with 17 points, including four three-pointers, and senior guard Natalie Winkelfoos (Bucyrus) with 15 points.  Meredith VanDyke led ONU with 12 points.

In the first half, B-W led by as many as 25 points at 44-19 as junior guard Karissa Kusick (Chicora, Pa./Karns City High School) scored on a follow shot at the buzzer.  In the second half, B-W extended its lead to as many as 27 points at 80-53 with 2:16 remaining when freshman guard Ashley Torain (Pickerington H.S.) canned a pair of foul shots.  The closest ONU would get would be the final score.

The Yellow Jackets will next be in action on Saturday, January 11, when they travel to Columbus to play Capital University in an OAC game in the Capital Center at 3:00 p.m.

GAME NOTES #12 vs. OHIO NORTHERN UNIVERSITY

The sixth-ranked BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET women's basketball team will travel to Ada, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at the ONU Sports Center at 7:30 p.m.

RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus station WBWC, 88.3 FM. will broadcast all home and away Yellow Jacket games. The pregame show from Ada will begin at 7:15 p.m. Seniors Jon Holko (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Ryan Edgar (Lancaster, Ohio) will call the play-by-play and do the color analysis, respectively.

The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket women's basketball team will look to win its fifth straight game following its trip to the Surf & Slam Tournament in San Diego, California.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 10-1 overall and 3-1 Ohio Athletic Conference record following their 55-47 victory against Point Loma Nazarene University in the championship game of the Surf & Slam Tournament on December 30. Point Loma was the host school. At the tourney, B-W also defeated Coe (Iowa.) College, 77-45, and the Univeristy of Wisconsin at Whitewater,72-44.

Ohio Northern enters this game with a 4-7 overall and 0-4 OAC record following its 70-65 victory over Benedictine (Ill.) University in the championship game of the Polar Bear Invitational Tournament in Ada on December 27-28. ONU also beat Dominican (Ill.) University, 67-33.

The B-W vs. Ohio Northern All-Time Series -- This is the 42nd meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Ohio Northern University in women's basketball. B-W leads the all-time series record, 23-18, including 16 straight victories. A year ago, B-W beat ONU in Berea, 77-65, and in Ada, 67-63.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- Look for 6'0" senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Holly Koepp (Lorain Catholic), 5'11" junior center Erika Schultz (Waterville/ Anthony Wayne), 5'5" senior All-OAC guard Natalie Winkelfoos (Bucyrus Senior), 5'7" freshman point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and 5'9" junior guard Karissa Kusick (Chicora, Pa./ Karns City) to start. It was B-W's fourth straight victory. Junior guard Karissa Kusick led B-W with a game-highs of 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists and canned three three-pointers.

The MVP and All-Tournament Team -- Senior forward Holly Koepp was named as the Surf & Slam Tournament Most Valuable Player and senior guard Natalie Winkelfoos joined her on the all-tournament team. Koepp totalled 32 points and 15 rebounds and canned 12 of 12 shots from the floor. Winkelfoos had 28 points and canned three of her four three-point attempts.

The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 11 games B-W is led in scoring and rebounding by Holly Koepp with 10.7 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game. She also has 18 assists and a team-leading 19 steals and shots 53.8 percent from three-point range (seven of 13) and 77.8 percent from the foul line (21 of 27). Natalie Winkelfoos is second in scoring at 10.1 ppg. and leads the team with 17 three-pointers. She cans 53.1% of her field goals (43 of 81) and an amazing 63% of her three-pointers (17 of 27). She also is fourth with 23 assists and third with 17 steals. Sarah Gordon is third at 10.0 ppg. She cans 51.3% of her field goals (40 of 78), is second with 14 three-pointers, third with 26 assists and first with 12 blocked shots. Karissa Kusick is fourth in scoring at 9.0 ppg., third with 3.6 rpg. and 10 three-pointers and second with 39 assists. Erika Schultz is fifth in scoring at 7.8 ppg., second in rebounding with 4.3 rpg. and first in field goal shooting at 55.3% (42 of 76). Stephanne Musser is sixth in scoring at 7.2 ppg. Nikki Alrenweg is seventh in scoring at 4.5 ppg., first with 44 assists and second with 18 steals.

Scouting The Polar Bears: Look for ONU Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5'6" junior guard Sandy Ziegler, 5'8" sophomore guard Kendra Bailey, 5'9" junior forward Alyssa Rickert, 5'10" junior forward Jodi Brown and 6'2" junior center Angela Gaio. Also look for 5'8" junior guard Krista Bailey, 5-11 senior forward Meredith VanDyck, 5'9" sophomore forward Jen Horvath, 5'7" sophomore guard Emily Zura and 6'0" junior forward Jackie O'Flaherty among others to see action.

In Ohio Northern's Last Game-- On December 28, 2002 versus Benedictine (Ill.) in Ada, Ohio: ONU-- 70, Benedictine-- 65-- The Polar Bears improved to 4-7 overall when they defeated Benedictine (Ill.), 70-65, in the championship game of the ONU Polar Bear Invitational in Ada, Ohio on Saturday, December, 28. In victory, the Polar Bears were led by Alyssa Rickert with a team-high 17 points. Joining her in double figures were Kendra Bailey and Meredith VanDyck with 12 points each and Angelo Gaio had 10 points. Van Dyck led ONU in rebounding with eight.

The Polar Bears Statistical Leaders -- After 11 games, ONU is led in scoring by Kendra Bailey at 14.5 points per game and 22 steals. Alyssa Rickert is second on the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg. Third on the team in scoring is Meredith Van Dyck at 6.5 ppg. She also leads the team in rebounding at 4.6 rebounds per game. Fourth on the team in scoring is Jen Horvath at 6.5 ppg. Fifth on the team in scoring is Sandy Ziegler at 5.0 ppg and leads the team with 30 assists.

Winkelfoos "HOT" From Three-Point Land -- In B-W's last six games, senior All-OAC guard Natalie Winkelfoos has canned 14 of her last 20 three-pointers for 70 percent. She has nailed an amazing 63 percent of her treys for the season (17 of 27).

Yellow Jackets Are Ranked Sixth Nationally -- The B-W women are ranked sixth nationally in the third weekly national poll for Division III by the d3hoops.com Internet Web site. The Yellow Jackets are also ranked 21st nationally by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in its preseason poll. B-W began the d3hoops.com poll ranked 11th, moved to ninth in the first weekly poll, sixth in the second poll and stayed sixth in week three.

The Difference -- After 11 games, the Yellow Jackets are outscoring the opposition by 18.3 points per game.

The Yellow Jacket Tradition of Excellence -- B-W is seeking a seventh straight 20-win season in 2002-2003. The Yellow Jackets have appeared in six of the last seven NCAA Division III National Tournaments. B-W has appeared in each of the last five OAC Championship Games. In both 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, B-W advanced to the "Elite" Eight of the Division III National Tournament.

Excellence Extends to the Classroom -- The B-W women's basketball excellence extends to the classroom. Last year's team was ranked eighth nationally in terms of grade point average.

Harrer is the Winningest All-Time Women's Coach -- Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in school history with 240 victories.

The Theme for 2002-2003 is "Back to Business" -- The Yellow Jackets have selected the theme of "Back to Business" in 2002-2003. B-W's goal is to return to the top of the OAC Standings and back to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
