Baldwin-Wallace Beats Muskingum, 82-53, in New ConcordBEREA, OHIO --Senior guard Natalie Winkelfoos (Bucyrus High School) scored a game-high 18 points today as 10th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College beat rival Muskingum College, 82-53, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Muskingum HPER Center in New Concord. With its win, B-W is now 14-1 overall and 7-1 in the OAC. With its loss, Muskingum fell to 5-9 overall and 1-7 in the OAC. The victory was also B-W's season-high eighth straight. In addition to Winkelfoos, junior guard Karissa Kusick (Chicora, Pa./Karns City H.S.) scored 14 points and senior forward Holly Koepp (Lorain H.S.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Muskingum was lead by Erin McQuaide with 10 points. She was the only Fighting Muskie in double figures. In the first half, B-W led by as many as 21 points at 27-6 with 7:35 left before the intermission when backup center Heather Eckstein (Williard H.S.) scored on a layup. B-W also led at halftime, 32-20. In the second half, B-W led by as many as 29 points at the final buzzer. The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Tuesday, January 21, when they host OAC rival Heidelberg College at 7:30 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. WOMEN'S GAME NOTES #15 vs. MUSKINGUM COLLEGE The tenth-ranked BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET women's basketball team travels to New Concord, Ohio to play an Ohio Athletic Conference game against OAC rival Muskingum College on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Muskingum HPER Center at 3:00 p.m.RADIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College campus station WBWC, 88.3 FM. will broadcast all home and away Yellow Jacket games. The pregame show from New Concord will begin at 2:45 p.m. Seniors Jon Holko (Wadsworth, Ohio) and Ryan Edgar (Lancaster, Ohio) will call the play-by-play and do the color analysis, respectively.
The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket women's basketball team will look to win its eighth straight game when it travels to New Concord to play OAC rival Muskingum College. The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 13-1 overall and 6-1 OAC record following their 61-57 victory against John Carroll University in Berea on Wednesday. The victory was B-W's season-high seventh straight. Muskingum enters this game with a 5-8 overall and 1-6 OAC record following its 62-60 against Capital in Bexley on Wednesday. The Baldwin-Wallace vs. Muskingum All-Time Series -- This is the 44th meeting between Baldwin-Wallace College and Muskingum College in women's basketball. Muskingum leads the all-time series, 22-21. B-W has won two straight games. In 2001-2002, B-W lost to Muskingum, 79-68, in New Concord, defeated the Fighting Muskies, 77-54, in Berea and beat Muskingum, 69-52, in the OAC Tournament in Berea. The last Muskingum win came on December 8, 2001, in New Concord when the Muskies prevailed, 75-67. Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- Look for 6'0" senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Holly Koepp (Lorain Catholic), 5'11" junior center Erika Schultz (Waterville/ Anthony Wayne), 5'5" senior All-OAC guard Natalie Winkelfoos (Bucyrus Senior), 5'7" freshman point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry) and 5'9" junior guard Karissa Kusick (Chicora, Pa./ Karns City) to start. Junior 5'10" All-OAC guard/ forward Sarah Gordon (Wooster Senior), 5'7" sophomore guard Stephanne Musser (Miamisburg), 6'1" senior center Heather Eckstein (Willard) and 5'10" freshman forward Alex Miller (Tiffin Columbian) will be the first players off the bench. In B-W's Last Game-- On January 15, 2003 versus John Carroll in Berea, Ohio: B-W-- 61, John Carroll-- 57 -- The Yellow Jackets defeated OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll in a slugfest, 61-57, at the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea and for the 21st straight time overall. Holly Koepp led the Yellow Jacket attack with a game-high tying 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds. Erika Schultz and Natalie Winkelfoos also scored in double figures adding 13 and 10 points respectively. Tracee Garland led the Blue Streaks with a game-high tying 18 points. The Yellow Jacket Statistical Leaders -- After 14 games B-W is led in scoring and rebounding by Holly Koepp with 12.9 points per game and 8.4 rebounds per game. She also has 21 assists and a team-leading 27 steals and shoots 52.9 percent from three-point range (nine of 17) and 82.6 percent from the foul line (38 of 46). Natalie Winkelfoos is second in scoring at 10.6 ppg. and leads the team with 21 three-pointers. She cans 54.2 percent of her field goals (58 of 107) and an amazing 60 percent of her three-pointers (21 of 35). She also is third with 34 assists and second with 26 steals. Sarah Gordon is third at 10.2 ppg. She cans 50 percent of her field goals (51 of 102), is second with 18 three-pointers and shoots 52.9 percent from "three-point land" on 18 of 34 attempts, fourth with 33 assists and first with 14 blocked shots. Karissa Kusick is fourth in scoring at 8.4 ppg., fourth with 3.2 rpg. and 11 three-pointers and second with 43 assists. Erika Schultz is fifth in scoring at 7.8 ppg., second in rebounding with 4.5 rpg. and second in field goal shooting at 53.6 percent on 52 of 97 attempts. Stephanne Musser is sixth in scoring at 6.9 ppg. Nikki Altenweg is seventh in scoring at 4.5 ppg., first with 52 assists and third with 21 steals. Scouting The Fighting Muskies of Muskingum College: Look for Head Coach Kerry Hamsher to start 5'7" junior guard Lindsay Mast, 5'7" junior guard Heidi Van Dyke, 5'6" junior guard Erin McQuaide, 5'9" junior forward Katie Workman, and 5'11" senior center Jessica Gates. Off the bench, look for 5'3" sophomore guard Jennifer Huffman, 5'7" junior guard Erin Calabrese, 5'8" sophomore guard Leslie Kimble, and 5'10" freshman guard Joanna Clark to all see action. In Muskingum's Last Game-- On January 15, 2003 versus Capital in Bexley, Ohio: Capital-- 62, Muskingum-- 60-- The Fighting Muskies lost a heart-breaker to the Capital Crusaders, 62-60, in Bexley. Despite the defeat, Jessica Gates led the Muskies with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsay Mast was the only other double figure scorer for the Muskies with 14 points. Danielle Meyer led the Crusaders with a game-high 19 points. Jennifer Lilly contributed a game-high 11 rebounds. The Fighting Muskie Statistical Leaders -- After 13 games, Muskingum is led in scoring by Jessica Gates with 14.4 ppg. She also leads the team in rebounding with 7.4 rpg and has 13 steals. Lindsay Mast is second on the team in scoring with 11.5 ppg. She also leads the team with 23 steals. Erin McQuaide is third in scoring with 11.2 ppg. She is second on the team in assists with 42 per game, averages 3.8 rpg, and has 12 steals. Katie Workman is tied for fourth in scoring at 6.1 ppg. She is second on the team in rebounding at 3.8 per game. Leslie Kimble is also tied for fourth on the team in scoring at 6.1 ppg. She also has 14 steals. Koepp Moves Closer to 1,000 Career Points -- Senior two-time All-OAC forward Holly Koepp, this week's OAC Player of the Week, scored 18 points against John Carroll and is now 33 points shy of becoming the 10th player in school history to score 1,000 points. For her career, Koepp now has 967 career points. Yellow Jackets Are Ranked 10th Nationally -- The B-W women are ranked 10th nationally in the sixth weekly national poll (Jan. 13) for Division III by the d3hoops.com Internet Web site. The Yellow Jackets were also ranked 10th nationally by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in its second weekly poll (Jan. 15). The Difference -- After 14 games, the Yellow Jackets are outscoring the opposition by 16.7 points per game. The Yellow Jacket Tradition of Excellence -- B-W is seeking a seventh straight 20-win season in 2002-2003. The Yellow Jackets have appeared in six of the last seven NCAA Division III National Tournaments. B-W has appeared in each of the last five OAC Championship Games. In both 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, B-W advanced to the "Elite" Eight of the Division III National Tournament. Harrer is the Winningest All-Time Women's Coach -- Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in school history with 243 victories. Academic Excellence -- The Yellow Jacket women’s basketball team had an outstanding Fall Semester in the classroom. Overall, 20 players combined for a 3.418 grade point average for Fall Semester. Leading the way were seniors Sarah Gordon and Holly Koepp and junior Erika Schultz with 4.0 G.P.A.s. Freshman Nikki Altenweg also had a 3.917 and junior Lindsay Meek (Port Clinton/ Huron) a 3.943. Overall, 17 of the 20 players were above a 3.1 G.P.A., and seven made the Dean’s List.Meek a Great Story -- Lindsay Meek returned to basketball this year after a long absence from the court. She left Port Clinton High School after graduation to attend Division II the University of Massachusetts - Lowell on a scholarship with her twin sister, Lori. But Lori developed cancer and has since passed away. Lindsay, now 26 years old and married, decided to go back to school and to resume playing basketball. She is a backup for the Yellow Jackets.
