BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Padua Fransiscan) scored a career-high 19 points in a losing effort as the 20th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team fell to Albion (Mich.) College, 67-62, today (December 20, 2004) at the Kresge Gymnasium in Albion, Michigan.
Albion had two players score over 20 points led by Sarah Caseky's game-high 24 points followed by Ruth Sventickas' 21. Caseky also had a game-high nine rebounds.
Jaworski was the only Yellow Jacket to score in double figures. Sophomore Michelle White (Hudson) and junior Nikki Altenweg (Perry) each scored nine points and two players scored seven.
With its victory, Albion improved to 9-1 overall and have won six straight games. B-W falls to 6-3 overall and have lost two consecutive games.
In the first half, Albion led by four points at 20-16 thanks to a three-pointer by Jaime Fornetti at the 6:38 mark. B-W responded with a 13-3 run capped by a layup by sophomore forward Jessica Latimer (Brooklyn) with 2:12 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets would take a 29-26 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, B-W would increase its lead to five on a successful jumper by White with 17:20 left in the game. Albion oustscored the Yellow Jackets 14-5 to take a 42-38 lead on a Emi Guimond basket at the 9:32 mark. Sophomore Kristin Matushevsky (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) would score on a jumper to cut the lead to 48-47 with 5:20 left in the game, but B-W could not take the lead as Albion went on to the 67-62 victory.
The Yellow Jackets next play on Wednesday, December 29 when they travel to Rockford, Illinois and will play the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh in the first round of the Rockford Holiday Tournament at 6:00 p.m. The consolation (2:00 p.m.) and championship (4:00 p.m.) games will be played the next day.

The Yellow Jackets enter this game at 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the OAC following a 56-52 loss to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University last Saturday in Berea. With the loss , B-W had its six-game winning streak snapped.
The Brittons enter the game with an 8-1 overall and 3-0 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association record following an 84-72 win against MIAA arch-rival Hope (Mich.) College on Saturday in Albion. The Brittons have won five straight games.
The Baldwin-Wallace College versus Albion (Mich.) College Series Information -- The Baldwin-Wallace College and Albion (Mich.) College women's basketball teams have met four times previously in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets holding a 4-0 series advantage. The Yellow Jackets won the last meeting with Albion a year ago in Berea on December 30, 2003 by a score of 59-46. B-W also won the first-ever meeting between the two schools, 75-47 during the 1988-89 season.
The Division III National Rankings -- B-W was ranked 20th in Division III in last week's WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) national poll and listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in the D3hoops.com internet web site national poll. Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The B-W Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jackets Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5'7" junior point guard Nikki Altenweg (Perry), 5'10" freshman guard Ashley Westenbarger (McComb) in the backcourt. Look for 5'9" sophomore Michelle White (Hudson), 5'10" freshman Cara Shiplett (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and 6'0" junior Jenn Neal (Mentor) to start on the inside. Shiplett is tied for the team lead in scoring at 10.9 ppg., is first in rebounding with 6.0 rpg. and is second in steals with 11. She is also canning a team-leading 53.0 percent of her field goals (35-of-66). Altenweg is tied for the team lead in scoring at 10.9 ppg. and tops the team in assists with 36 and steals with 24. Westenbarger is scoring 7.3 ppg. and is second with 18 assists and tied for third in steals with seven. Neal is scoring 5.8 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg. and tops the team with eight blocked shots. White scores 7.5 ppg. and is second with 5.5 rpg.
Off the bench, look for coach Harrer to play as many as nine players, depending on the opponent and matchups. The Albion Probable Starters--Look for Albion Head Coach Doreen Belkowski to start 6'0" sophomore forward Ruth Sven-tickas and 6'0" junior forward Liz Marcuz in the post positions. Look for 5'10" senior guard Sarah Caskey and 5'7" junior guard Jaime Fornetti to be accompanied by 5'6" senior guard Vanessa Thompson in the backcourt. Caskey tops the team in scoring at 18.6 ppg., three-pointers with 21, assists with 48, and steals with 16, and is second in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. She has also canned 42-of-48 foul shots for 87.5 percent. Marcuz is scoring 4.5 ppg. and tops the team in rebounding at 6.6 rpg. Sventickas is second in scoring at 13.0 ppg., grabs 4.2 rpg. and shoots 57.1 percent from the floor (52-of-91). Thompson is third in scoring at 8.4 ppg., grabs 3.1 rpg. and has canned 11 triples. Fornetti scores 7.3 ppg., has passed for 20 assists and is second with 14 steals Off the bench, look for Coach Belkowski to play 6'0" sophomore forward Blair Meyer, 5'5" junior guard Kellyn Glynn, 5'9" sophomore guard Jessica Babcock and 6'1" freshman forward Emi Guimond. In last year's meeting between B-W and Albion, the Yellow Jackets captured a 59-46 victory at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The key to the victory for the Yellow Jackets was outrebounding Albion, 46-30. Leading the way for B-W was graduated senior All-American forward Erika Schultz with a game-high 19 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Joining her in double figures was current junior point guard Nikki Altenweg with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Albion was led by current sophomore forward Ruth Sventickas with 15 points and urrent junior forward Liz Marcuz chipped in with 11 points.
In B-W's Last Game on December 18, 2004 versus Capital University in Berea, Ohio: Capital -- 56, Baldwin-Wallace -- 52 -- The Yellow Jackets fell to OAC-rival Capital University on December 18, 2004 at the Ursprung Gym in Berea. Despite the loss, B-W was led by junior point guard Nikki Altenweg and sophomore forward Michelle White with 10 points each. Altenweg also added five rebounds and five assists with NO turnovers in 29 minutes. White totaled a team-leading seven rebounds.
In Albion's Last Game on December 18 versus Hope (MIch.) in Albion, Michigan: Albion --84, Hope College -- 72 -- In Albion's last game, on Saturday at home, the Brittons upset nationally-ranked and visiting Hope College 84-72, at the Kresge Gymnasium. The Brittons were led by senior guard Sarah Caskey with a game-high 22 points and nine assists. She was joined in double figures by senior guard Vanessa Thompson with 19 points, including four-of-four shooting from three-point range. In addition, sophomore forward Ruth Sventickas had 14 points and seven rebounds, and freshman forward Emi Guimond came of the bench to tally 12 points and grab a team-high eight rebounds. Albion connected on 24-of-44 shots from the floor, including 11-of-16 three-pointers), and canned 25-of-31 foul shots for good measure.

OAC Titles and NCAA Excellence --- Last winter, the Yellow Jacket women's basketball team won its fourth OAC regular season title in the last six years. B-W won OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 1999-2000, 2000-2001 and 2001-2002. The Yellow Jackets have also advanced to the NCAA Division III National Tournament in seven of the last nine years, including in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 when it advanced to the "Elite Eight" each year.
Eight Straight 20-Win Seasons -- The Yellow Jackets have eight straight 20-win season. During that time span, B-W is 200-35 overall.
Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 284 victories. Harrer is 284-110 in her career with a .721 winning percentage in 15 seasons at B-W.
