Loras (Iowa) Beats Albion (Mich.), 68-59, in First Round B-W Holiday Tourney Game in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior guard Sarah Pillon scored a game-high 14 points as the Loras (Iowa) College women’s basketball team defeated Albion (Mich.) College, 68-59, tonight (Tuesday, December 29, 2009) in the first round of the Baldwin-Wallace College Holiday Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win advances the Duhawks  into tomorrow’s championship game against host B-W, a 65-42 winner versus Manchester (Ind.) College in the first game tonight, at 4:00 p.m.

In addition to Pillon for the the Duhawks, now 6-4 overall, sophomore forward Alex Hudson had 13 points, senior guard Lindsey Bava had 12 and senior guard Lisa Morissey had 10 points. Despite their loss, the Brittons, now 4-6 overall, were led by junior guard Keighan Edwards and junior guard Melissa Shaw each had 12 points. Albion now plays Manchester (Ind.) in the consolation game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

For most of  the first half, neither team led by more than two points and  there were seven ties with the last being at 17-17. Loras then outscored Albion 8-2 to take a commanding 25-19 advantage at the 2:02 mark when Bava canned a pair of foul shots. The Duhawks maintained the lead at the intermission at 29-24.

In the second half, Loras extended its lead to 12 points as it scored the first seven points to take a 36-24 lead at the 17:52 mark when Pillon made two foul shots. The lead grew to 15 points at 45-30 at the 11:07 mark when freshman center Melissa Hermann stole the ball, drove the length of the court and scored on a layup. 
The largest Loras lead was 18 points at 52-34 at the 6:52 mark when Pillon canned a three-pointer. Then Albion outscored the Duhawks 19-10 to get within nine points at 62-53 at the 57-second mark when Edwards made a three-pointer and again at 66-57 with 17 seconds left Shaw made a jump shot.
