Albion (Mich.) Beats Manchester (Ind.), 62-51, in B-W Holiday Tourney Consolation Game

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior guard Melissa Shaw scored 16  points as the Albion (Mich.) College women’s basketball team defeated Manchester (Ind.) College, 62-51, today (Wednesday, December 30, 2009) in the consolation game of the B-W Holiday Tournament in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

In addition to Shaw for the the Brittons, junior guard Keigan Edwards had 14 points and sophomore guard Jaylin Feldt had 11. Manchester was led by junior center Kailey Honn’s 15 points. For their efforts, Albion’s Edwards and Manchester’s Honn were named to the all-tournament team.

With its win, Albion is now 5-6 overall while Manchester drops to 1-11 overall.

In the first half, after Manchester took a 3-0 lead, Albion went on a 9-0 run to take a 9-3 lead at the 15:55 mark when Shaw made two foul shots. After a Spartan foul shot made the score 9-4 at the 15:27 mark, Albion’s Feldt canned back-to-back three-pointers to push the lead to 15-4 at the 13:21 mark.

After an Edwards trey pushed the Britton lead to 18-4 with 12:52 left, Manchester had a 7-0 run to close to 18-11 with 10:13 left when freshman guard Melissa Elzroth made a steal and scored a basket on a driving layup off glass. Albion then outscored the Spartans 16-7 to take a 15-point lead at 34-19 with 3:14 left when junior forward Autumn Haggadrone made one of two foul shots. The Brittons also led at halftime, 36-24.

In the second half, Manchester opened with a 10-2 run to cut Albion’s lead to 38-34 with 14:27 left when Laine Mello made a 10-foot jump shot.  Albion then rebuilt a nine-point lead at 43-34 with 12:31 remaining when sophomore center Patty Rewa made her second straight pair of foul shots.
Manchester again came right back with its own 7-0 run to cut the lead to two points at 43-41 with 9:24 left when sophomore guard Alexandra Starkey made a jumper.  The Spartans got within one point at 48-47 with 5:50 left when senior guard Lauren Kalis canned a triple, but the Britton’s responded with a 9-2 run to rebuild an eight-point bulge at 57-49 with 1:56 left when Feldt made her third trey of the game.
