Hope (Mich.) Women Beat Juniata (Pa.), 76-47, in Berea, Ohio in NCAA Tournament

BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore guard Philana Greene and sophomore forward Jenny Cowen each scored 12 points tonight (Friday, March 1, 2008) as the Hope (Michigan) College women’s basketball team defeated Juniata (Pa.) College, 76-47, in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium of the Lou Higgins Center in Berea in the first game of a doubleheader in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Flying Dutch now advance to tomorrow's Regional Championship Game.

With its victory, Hope is now 28-0 overall while Juniata ends its season at 18-10 overall.

In the first half, Hope jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the 15:49 mark when  senior forward Stacy Warsen made a layup. The Flying Dutch increased their lead to 14-0 before Juniata junior forward Kelly Ashcraft made a jump shot at the 14:03 to cut the lead to 14-2. Hope’s largest first half lead was 21 points at 40-19 at the 1.1-second mark when junior forward Courtney Knox made a hook shot.

In the second half, Hope continued to built its lead to 29 points at 70-41 with 4:35 left when freshman forward Ericka Bruinsma made a three-pointer.

In addition to Green and Cowen for Hope, freshman backup center Carrie Snikkers had 10 points. For Juniata, freshman forward Jen Hnatuck led the way with 12 points, junior guard Claudia McDowell had 11 and Ashcraft had 10.
