16th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Wilmington College, 71-55, To Win Sixth Straight

BEREA, OHIO — Senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) came off the bench to score a game-high 15 points today (Saturday, February 9, 2008) as the the 16th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 71-55, in an OAC game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The game matched the first place Yellow Jackets against the second place Quakers.

With its victory, B-W is 19-2 overall and 12-2 in the OAC and has won six straight games.  With its loss, Wilmington dropped to 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the OAC and ended a four-game winning streak.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the 17:16 mark when freshman guard Carrie Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell Loudon) made a jump shot. Wilmington then scored the next nine points to take a 10-6 lead at the 13:25 mark when sophomore center Kortney Kinn made a layup.

After B-W regained the lead at 11-10, Wilmington went on an 8-2 run to take its biggest lead of the half at 18-13 with 9:59 left when senior forward Gina Hyle made two foul shots. B-W then outscored the Quakers 18-8 to regain its largest lead of the half at 31-26 with 59 seconds left when senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) made a jumper. A Quaker basket with 40 seconds left gave B-W a 31-28 advantage at the intermission.

In the second half, back-to-back three-pointers by senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) and freshman guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) gave B-W its largest lead of the game at nine points at 37-28 with 17:32 left. B-W increased its lead to 15 points at 53-38 with 8:40 left when Budge made a pair of foul shots. The closest the Quakers would get would be six points at 55-49 with 6:11 left when Kinn made a jumper.

In addition to Flowers, junior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 14 points and freshman guard and twin sister Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell Loudon) added 12. Wilmington was led by sophomore guard Marianne McGoron and senior forward Katie Streck with 12 points each.

The B-W women will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 13 when they host Otterbein College in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea at 7:30 p.m.

Game Notes #21 HOST Wilmington College

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College on Saturday, February 9, 2008 in the Ursprung Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m.. This is the 14th OAC regular season game and the second of two regular season games against the Quakers.

         

 RADIO -- All Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The Pregame Setup -- The 16th-ranked (WBCA poll) Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Wilmington College in a key OAC regular season matchup for both teams. The Yellow Jackets are in first place in the OAC with an 11-2 conference mark and Wilmington is just one game back at 10-3 in league play and tied with Ohio Northern University.

The Yellow Jackets enter the game with an 18-2 overall and 11-2 OAC record following a 79-61 victory versus Heidelberg College on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in Tiffin. B-W has won five straight games.

The Quakers enter the game with a 16-4 overall and 10-3 OAC record following an 86-66 win against Muskingum College on Feb. 6 in Wilmington. Wilmington have won four straight games.

The B-W Versus Wilmington All-Time Series -- B-W and Wilmington have previously met 23 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 13-10. In the first game this season, B-W beat the Quakers, 71-67, on Dec. 15, 2007 in Wilmington. The last Quaker win came on Jan. 13, 2007 when Wilmington beat B-W, 72-69, in Wilmington. The first time B-W and Wilmington met was in 1988-89 when B-W won, 64-61.

B-W and Wilmington OAC Success -- B-W (six) and Wilmington (four) have either won the OAC regular season title or combined (once) to win it in each of the past nine seasons. The Yellow Jackets (four) and Quakers (four) also have won eight of the last nine OAC Tournament titles and the OAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

In This Year's First B-W versus Wilmington Game on Dec. 15 in Wilmington: B-W -- 71, Wilmington -- 67-- In the first regular season meeting between B-W and Wilmington, on Dec. 15, 2007 in the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington, B-W defeated Wilmington, 71-67. B-W was led by 5'8'' senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) with a teamhigh 21 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Jackets was 5'8'' junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) and 5'6'' junior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) with 12 points each. The Quakers were led by 5'9'' senior forward Katie Streck with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 70.1 points per game and allows 56.0 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 14.1 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 40.7 rpg. and allow 36.9 rpg. for a plus 3.8 differential. B-W shoots 43.7 percent from the field (526-of-1205), including 32.9 percent from three point range (76-of-231), and makes 66.1 percent of its foul shots (273-of-413).

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start Amanda Mondrach, Rachael Quiring and Selena Eskinazi-Budge in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5' 8" senior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) to start at forward and for 6' 2" sophomore Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start at center. To date, Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 10.2 points per game, grabs 4.3 rebounds per game and leads the team in steals with 37 and is also second with 18 blocked shots and third with 36 assists. Mondrach, a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference pick and the 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, is second in scoring and tallies 8.5 ppg., grabs 3.0 rpg., has canned a team-high 21 threepointers and has passed for 35 assists. Brough averages 7.4 ppg., is second with 5.0 rpg. and tops the team with 34 blocked shots. Quiring scores 7.5 ppg., leads the team in assists with 40, and shoots 78.6% from the charity stripe. Shrider scores 5.4 ppg. and tops the team with 7.3 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 10" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5'10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'11 freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove), 5'6" junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers scores 6.8 ppg. and grabs 4.1. Courtney Ritzler scores 5.7 ppg., is second with 18 three-pointers and steals with 24. Schroeder scores 6.9 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and has made 12 triples.

In B-W's Last Game versus Heidelberg College on Feb. 5 in Tiffin: Baldwin-Wallace -- 79, Heidelberg -- 61 -- In B-W's last game, a 79-61 win against OAC rival Heidelberg College on February 5 at the Sieberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, the Yellow Jackets were led by Amanda Schroeder with 14 points and Amanda Mondrach had 13. Ariel Brough led the Yellow Jackets with nine rebounds. The key to the win was B-W shooting 58.3 percent from the floor on 28-of-48 attempts.

Scouting the Wilmington College Quakers -- Look for Head Coach Jerry Scheve to start 6'1'' sophomore post Kortney Kin, 5'8'' senior Gina Hyle and Katie Streck on the inside. In the backcourt, look for 5'5'' senior Jackie Hauke and 5'7'' sophomore Marianne McGordon. Streck leads the team in scoring at 16.4 ppg., is second in rebounding at 6.9 rpg. and shoots 54.8% from the field (119-of-217). She also has 15 three-pointers. Kin is second in scoring at 13.0 ppg., and tops the team in rebounding with 7.1 rpg. Hyle averages 10.1 ppg., grabs 5.9 rpg., and has 44 assists. Hauke scores 8.6 ppg., grabs 3.5 rpg. and has the most steals on the team with 45. McGordon averages 10.1 ppg., has a team-high 76 assists and leads Wilmington with 36 three-pointers.

Off the bench, look for Scheve to utilize 6'0'' sophomore wing Claire Brown, 6'0'' sophomore post Ki Godfrey, 5'7'' freshman guard Allie Meranda and 5'5'' senior guard Anne Haky. Brown leads the players off the bench in scoring with 3.9 ppg.

In Wilmington's Last Game Against Muskingum College in Wilmington: Wilmington -- 88, Muskingum -- 66-- In Wilmington's last game, an 88-66 win on Feb. 6 against Muskingum Collge at the Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington, the Lady Quakers were led by Katie Streck with 16 points. She was joined in double-figures by Shawnae Adams with 13 points, Gina Hyle with 12 points and Kristine Bingley with 10 points.

Yellow Jackets Back in First Place — B-W is back in first place in the OAC Standings following a Wednesday loss by Ohio Northern University. B-W holds the tie-breaker with two wins versus the Polar Bears and can gain that same advantage with a win versus Wilmington.

The Division III National Polls -- B-W is ranked 16th nationally in this week's WBCA/ USA TODAY Division III Coaches poll and 17th in the d3hoops.com Internet Web site Division III poll.

Serena Farage Perfect From the Floor Last Week and is This Week's OAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week — Sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) made ALL 11 of her field goal attempts last week. She is still seven straight made field goals away from either the B-W or OAC-record of 18 straight by B-W graduate Anjee Beard during the 1999-2000 season. For her efforts of scoring 26 points in 24 minutes and setting a career-high of 13 points against Mount Union College on January 30 and then tying it with 13 more on Feb. 2 at ONU, Farage is this week's OAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. She also set a career-high with six rebounds versus ONU.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 365 victories. Harrer is 365-128 in her career.
