12th-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace Women Beat Otterbein, 81-56, for Seventh Straight Win

BEREA, OHIO Senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) scored 16 points tonight (Wednesday, February 13, 2008) as the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Otterbein College, 81-56, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its victory, B-W is 20-2 overall and 13-2 in the OAC and has won seven straight games. It also is B-W's 11th 20-win season in the past 12 years. With its loss, Otterbein dropped to 12-10 overall and 8-7 in the OAC and ended a four-game winning streak.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to an 11-0 lead at the 15:22 mark when sophomore forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/Steele) made a layup.  Otterbein then answered with a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 14-10 when senior guard Sara Fee made a three pointer at the 12:52 mark.  The Jackets then went on a 25-13 run to lead, 39-23, when junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) made layup at the 4:39 mark.  Senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/Warren Local) made two foul shots with 59 seconds to play in the half to give B-W a 45-28 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, B-W increased its lead to 29 points on two occasions with the last time being at the 11:34 mark when junior guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) made jumper.  Both team exchange baskets the down the stretch and the Yellow Jackets went on for the 81-56 victory.

In addition to Eskinazi-Budge, Mondrach had 13 points and freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) had 11.  Otterbein was led by junior guard Laura Roth’s 16 points.

The B-W women will be back in action on Saturday, February 16 when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to play Muskingum College at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #22 HOST Otterbein College

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. in Berea. This is the 15th OAC regular season game and the second of two games against the Cardinals.

RADIO -- All Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The pregame show generally begins at least 15 minutes prior to tipoff.

The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its seventh straight game and 15th of its last 16 as the Yellow Jackets host the Otterbein College Cardinals in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup.

The Yellow Jackets enter the game with a 19-2 overall and 12-2 OAC record following a 71-55 win against Wilmington College on Saturday, February 9 in Berea. B-W has won six straight and 14 of its last 15 games and is currently in first place in the OAC. The Jackets are one game ahead of second place Ohio Northern University (11-3) and two games in front of Wilmington (10-4) and hold the tie-breaker and swept the season series against both ONU and the Quakers.

The Cardinals enter the game with a 12-9 overall and 8-6 OAC record following a 85-79 win against Mount Union College on Feb. 9 in Westerville. Otterbein currently stands in a tie for fourth place in the OAC and is tied with Capital University and John Carroll University. Otterbein, Capital and JCU are now battling for the final home seed in the upcoming, Feb. 26-March 1, OAC Tournament.

The B-W Versus Otterbein All-Time Series -- B-W and Otterbein have previously met 64 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets holding a commanding all-time series lead, 42-22. In the first game this season, B-W beat the Cardinals, 84-70, on Jan. 9, 2008 in Westerville. The last Otterbein victory come on February 7, 2007 as the Cardinals upset the Yellow Jackets, 93-91, in Berea. B-W has won 12 of the past 13 games against Otterbein. The first time B-W and Otterbein met was in 1974-75 when B-W won, 50-49.

In This Year's First B-W versus Otterbein Game -- Baldwin-Wallace -- 84, Otterbein -- 70 -- In the first regular season meeting between B-W and Otterbein, on Jan. 9, 2008 in the Rike Center in Westerville, B-W defeated Otterbein, 84-70. Leading the way to victory for B-W was 5'8'' junior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) with a teamhigh 15 points. Also, 5'11'' freshman guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) had a then career-high 14 points and 5' 8'' senior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) and 6'2" sophomore center Ariel Brough each scored 11 points.  Keys to the win were outrebounding the Cardinals, 49-32, and forcing 17 turnovers.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 70.1 points per game and allows 56.0 ppg. to its opponents for a plus-14.1 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 40.7 rpg. and allow 34.9 rpg. for a plus-5.8 differential. B-W shoots 43.7 percent from the field (550-of-1258), including 33.6 percent from three point range (80-of-238), and makes 67.0 percent of its foul shots (292-of-436).

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start Amanda Mondrach and 5' 6" junior point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/Holy Name) in the backcourt along with 5' 8" senior Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood). On the inside, look for Stacia Shrider to start at forward and Ariel Brough at center. To date, Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 10.0 ppg. and leads in steals with 38. She is also second with 19 blocks and 37 assists and tied for third grabbing 4.1 rpg. Mondrach is second in scoring and tallies 8.0 points per game, has canned a team-high 21 three-pointers, is third on the team with 36 assists, and leads the team with a 44.7 threepoint shooting percentage (21-of-47). Quiring is third and scores 7.8 ppg., leads the team in assists with 42, and shoots 78.1 percent (25-of-32) from the charity stripe, good for second place on the squad. Brough averages 7.5 ppg., is second with 5.1 rpg. and tops the team with 38 blocked shots. Shrider rounds out the starting five by scoring 5.4 ppg. and tops the team with 7.2 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 10" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5' 10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), Amanda Schroeder and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers leads the bench in scoring 7.1 ppg. and is grabbing 4.1 rpg. Schroeder scores 6.9 ppg. and pulls down 2.7 rpg. Courtney Ritzler is scoring at 6.0 ppg. and second with 25 steals. Samara scores 4.5 ppg., and grabs 3.9 rpg.

In B-W's Last Game versus Wilmington College on Feb. 9 in Berea: Baldwin-Wallace -- 71 --, Wilmington -- 55 -- In B-W's last game, a 71-55 win against OAC rival Wilmington College on February 9 in the Ursprung Gym, the Yellow Jackets were led by Carly Flowers, who came off the bench to score 15 points. In addition, Rachael Quiring scored 14 points and Courtney Ritzler added 12 more off the bench. Keys to the victory included outrebounding Wilmington in the second half by 18 caroms and causing the Quakers to shoot just 29.5% for the game on 18-of-61 attempts. B-W's bench also outscored Wilmington's, 36-10.

Scouting the Otterbein College Cardinals -- Look for Head Coach Connie Richardson to start 5' 11" senior guard/forward Ana Gamble and 5' 11" sophomore forward/guard Katy Miller on the inside. In the backcourt, look for 5' 7'' junior Laura Roth, 5' 6" sophomore guard Karli Volkmer and 5' 10'' Sara Fee . Roth leads the team in scoring at 16.5 ppg., is first in assists with 101, and shoots 43.4% from the field. Gamble is second in scoring at 13.7 ppg., and third on the team with 48 assits and 34 steals. Volkmer averages 11.7 ppg., grabs 4.6 rpg., and has 39 assists. Fee scores 11.1 ppg., adds 4.5 rpg., and second on the team with 14 blocked shots. Miller averages 9.4 ppg. and has a team-high 9.1 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Richardson to utilize 6' 0'' sophomore forward Allison Huettel, 5' 11" junior forward Carla Lewis, and 5' 6" senior forward Chelsea Callif. Huettel leads the bench in scoring at 3.2 ppg. and Lewis is second on the bench in rebounding with 2.8 rpg.

In Otterbein's Last Game Against Mount Union College in Westerville: Otterbein -- 85 --, Mount Union -- 79 -- In Otterbein's last game, a 85-79 win on Feb. 9 against Mount Union Collge at the Rike Center in Westerville, the Cardinals were led by Katy Miller who scored 18 points and 10 rebounds. In addition to Miller, Anna Gamble had 16 points and Laura Roth added 15 points. Mount Union was led by Alecia Willams with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 366 victories. Harrer is 366-128 in her career for a .740 winning percentage.

Ariel Brough Sets the B-W Single-Season Block Record -- With her four blocks versus Wilmington, sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) broke B-W's single-season block record of 37 set by Jen Stepp in 1993-1994 and matched by Sarah Gordon in 2002-2003. To date, Brough has 69 career blocks and is one shy of Stepp's career mark.
