21st-Ranked Baldwin Wallace University Women Beat Ohio Northern, 62-56, to Move into First Place Tie
BEREA, OHIO — Sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye) tied a career-high with 13 points today (Saturday, February 2, 2008) as the 21st-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women’s basketball team defeated Ohio Northern University, 62-56, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the ONU Sports Center in Ada. The win moved the Yellow Jackets into a first place tie with the Polar Bears.
With its victory, BW is 17-2 overall and 10-2 in the OAC and was its fourth straight victory this season and gave the Yellow Jackets a sweep of the season series. With its loss, ONU fell to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the OAC and ended a six-game winning streak.
In the first half, ONU jumped out to a 12-6 lead at the 12:24 mark when junior guard Alisha Rinehart made a layup. BW outscored the Polar Bears 18-9 to take a three-point lead at 24-21 for the third time in the first stanza and with 6:30 left when Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) made a layup. ONU then went on a 10-2 run to rebuild its lead to 31-26 with 2:19 left when Markle made two foul shots. ONU led by one point at halftime, 31-30.
In the second half, BW scored the first four points to lead 34-31 with 16:26 left when Quiring made a jumper. BW had its largest lead of the game of eight points at 59-51 with 27 seconds left when Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) made two foul shots.
In addition to Farage, Quiring had 10 points and Shrider grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. For ONU, senior center Erin Brand had a game-high 18 points and senior guard Jenny Markle had 13.
The BW women will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Tiffin to play OAC rival Heidelberg College at the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team will look to win its fourth straight game and move into a first place tie in the Ohio Athletic Conference when it travels to Ada to play upstart Ohio Northern University.
The Yellow Jackets enter the game with a 16-2 overall and 9-2 OAC record following a 65-47 win versus Mount Union College on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in Berea. BW has won three straight games and 11 of its last 12 and stands all alone in second place in the OAC and one game back of ONU.
The Polar Bears enter the game atop the OAC with a 15-3 overall and 10-1 OAC record following a 65-57 win against Heidelberg College on Jan. 30 in Tiffin. ONU has won six straight games and 10 of its last 11, but that loss came to nationally-ranked Depauw (Ind.) University. ONU's three losses are all to top-ranked opponents (BW, Depauw and top-ranked Hope, Mich. College).
The BW versus ONU All-Time Series -- BW and Ohio Northern have previously met 53 times in women's basketball with the Polar Bears leading the all-time series, 28-25, but the Yellow Jackets won the first meeting this season, on December 8, 2007 in Berea by a score of 79-52. The teams split the season series last season with each squad picking up a home victory. BW beat the Polar Bears, 65-55, in the first meeting last season on December 9 , 2006 in Berea. ONU came back with a victory in Ada on January 27, 2007 by a score of 68-62. The first time BW and ONU met was in 1974-1975 and ONU won, 67-42.

Sophmore 6'2" center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) had a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds for BW. In addition, 5'8" senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) had 14 points, 5'8" freshman guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) had 11 and 5'6" junior guard Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had 10. ONU was led by 5'6" senior guard Leah Zimmerman's 10 points.
BW Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, BW scores 70.0 points per game and allows 55.7 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 14.3 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 40.7 rpg. and allow 35.3 rpg. for a plus-5.4 differential. BW shoots 43.1 percent from the field (473-of-1097), including 34.3 percent from three point range (73-of-213), and makes 66.8 percent of its foul shots (241-of-361).
Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start 5' 9'' junior 2-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/HolyName), Rachael Quiring and Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) in the backcourt. On the inside, look for 5' 8" senior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) to start at forward and for Ariel Brough to start at center. To date, Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 10.7 ppg. and leads in steals with 35. She is also second with 17 blocks and second with 33 assists and 4.5 rpg. Mondrach, the 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, is second in scoring and tallies 8.4 points per game, has canned a team-high 20 three-pointers, has passed for 31assists, and is in the top-three in all three shooting percentage categories. Brough averages 7.7 ppg., is second with 4.8 rpg. and tops the team with 30 blocked shots. Quiring is fourth and scores 7.3 ppg., leads the team in assists with 37, and shoots 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the charity stripe, good for second place on the squad. Shrider rounds out the starting five by scoring 5.1 ppg. and tops the team with 7.3 rpg.
Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 10" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5'10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'11 freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler. Flowers, who led BW in scoring a year ago, leads the bench in scoring with 6.6 ppg. and is third with 20 steals. Courtney Ritzler is seventh in scoring at 6.1 ppg. and is second with 23 steals.

Scouting the Ohio Northern Polar Bears -- Look for Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5' 4" junior point guard Emily Culbertson, 5' 2" senior guard Jenny Markle, 5' 8" senior guard Megan Cevasco, Leah Zimmerman and 5' 10" senior center Erin Brand. Brand tops the team in scoring at 13.3 ppg. and rebounding with 5.3 rpg. Markle is second at 11.2 ppg., grabs 2.2 rpg. and has a team-leading 53 three-pointers and 54 assists. Zimmerman is fourth in scoring with 8.4 ppg., grabs 3.6 rpg., has 15 triples and 31 assists. Cevasco scores 6.4 ppg., grabs 4.7 rpg., has 42 assists and 19 steals and leads the team with 10 blocked shots. Culbertson is scoring 4.5 ppg. and leads the team with 36 steals.
Off the bench, look for Coach Durand to play 5'4" junior guard Alisha Rinehart, 5'8" junior forward Tricia Fuller 5'10" sophomore forward Brittany Bogart, and 5'10" senior center Tara Butler. Rinehart leads the bench scoring with 11.2 ppg. and grabs 3.1 rpg.
In Ohio Northern's Last Game Against Heidelberg College in Tiffin: Ohio Northern -- 65 --, Heidelberg-- 57-- In ONU's last game, a 65-57 win at Heidelberg College on January 30 in Tiffin, the Polar Bears were led by Erin Brand with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds. Also in double figures were Jenny Markle with 13 points and Leah Zimmerman with 10.
