Baldwin-Wallace Women Defeat Ohio Northern, 79-52, in Berea to Improve to 7-1 Overall

BEREA, OHIO – Sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) scored a game and career-high 16 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 79-52, today (Saturday, December 8, 2007) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its victory, B-W is now 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the OAC and has won two straight games. With its loss, ONU fell to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

 In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 11-4 lead at the 11:45 mark when senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) made a layup. ONU then went on a 15-6 run to take a 19-17 lead at the 6:50 mark when Markle made a three-pointer. B-W then went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-19 lead at the 3:41 left before the intermission when Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) made a triple. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to their largest of the first stanza at eight points at 29-21 when Budge made a jumper seven seconds before halftime.

In the second half, B-W extended its lead to 16 points at 54-38 with 7:47 left when senior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Holy Name) canned a three-pointer. The Yellow Jackets also led by as many as 29 points at 79-50 when freshman forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Marion Steele) made a layup.

 In addition to Brough, Budge had 14 points, Courtney Ritzler had 11 and junior guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) had 10. ONU was led by senior forward Leah Zimmerman with 10 points.

 The Yellow Jacket women will be back in action on Saturday, December 15 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio and play Wilmington College in an OAC game at 3:00 p.m.

Game Notes #8 HOSTS Ohio Northern University

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University on Saturday, December 8 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 3:00 p.m. This is the third regular season game for the Yellow Jackets.

               

 RADIO -- All Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The pregame show generally begins at least 15 minutes prior to tipoff.

The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University in the first of two Ohio Athletic Conference regular season clashes this season.

The Yellow Jackets, who are receiving votes in this week's d3hoops.com and WBCA polls, enter this game with a 6-1 overall and 1-1 OAC record following a 58-39 win against Mount Union College on Wednesday (Dec. 5) in Alliance. B-W opened the OAC regular season last Saturday (Dec. 1) when it lost to Capital University, 72-64 in overtime.

The Polar Bears enter this game with a 5-1 overall and 2-0 OAC record following their 66-39 win against Heidelberg College on Wednesday (Dec. 5) in Ada. ONU has won four straight games.

The B-W Versus ONU All-Time Series -- B-W and Ohio Northern have previously met 52 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 28-24. The Yellow Jackets have won 25 of the last 26 meetings. A year ago, B-W beat the Polar Bears in the first meeting of the season by a 65-55 score on Dec. 9, 2006 in Berea. ONU won the second meeting on January 27, 2007 in Ada by the score of 68-62. The first time B-W and Ohio Northern met was in 1974-1975 when ONU won, 67-42, in Berea.

In Last Year's First B-W vs. ONU: B-W-- 65, ONU-- 55-- In the first of two regular season meetings between B-W and ONU, on Dec. 9, 2006 in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea, B-W defeated ONU, 65-55. Leading the way to victory for B-W was current 5'10" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds and graduated forward Jessica Lattimer had 11 points. Current 5'8" senior guard Megan Cevasco paced ONU with 15 points.

In Last Year's Second B-W vs. ONU Game: B-W -- 62, ONU -- 68 -- In the second of two regular season meetings between B-W and ONU, on January 27, 2007 in the ONU Sports Center in Ada, B-W was upset by the Polar Bears, 68- 62. Leading the way for B-W was current 5'8" junior All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) with 12 points. Ohio Northern was led by current 5'10" senior center Erin Brand with 18 points. The Polar Bear win ended a 25-game Yellow Jacket win streak dating back to 1995.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to start Amanda Mondrach and 5'6" junior Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) in the backcourt along with 5'8" senior Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood). On the inside, look for 5'8" senior Stacia Shrider(Marietta/Warren Local) to start at forward and for 6'2" sophomore Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start at center. To date, Mondrach scores 8.3 points per game, grabs 3.6 rebounds per game, canned six three-pointers and passed for nine assists. Quiring scores 7.0 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and has a team-leading 16 assists. Brough averages 6.3 ppg. and 3.7 rpg. and tops the team with 11 blocked shots.  Shrider scores 3.4 ppg. and tops the team with 6.7 rpg. Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-leading 11.1 ppg., grabs 5.9 rpg., is second with 13 assists and six blocked shots and is tied for the team lead in steals with 13.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use Carly Flowers , 5'10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/Steele), 5'10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'9" freshman guard Amanda Schroeder and 5'7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon). Flowers scores 7.1 ppg. and grabs 4.6 rpg. Courtney scores 5.7 ppg., grabs 2.9 rpg. and has a team-leading eight three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game at Mount Union College: B-W--58, Mt. Union-- 39 -- On Wednesday night in Alliance, B-W defeated Mount Union, 58-39. Selena Eskinazi-Budge scored a game-high 15 points to lead B-W and she was the only double figure scorer for the Yellow Jackets.

Scouting the Ohio Northern Polar Bears -- As a team, Ohio Nothern averages 70.3 points per game and allows 52.8 ppg to their opponents. ONU also outrebounds its opponents 32.0 rpg. to 30.5 rpg. for a plus 1.5 rpg. The Polar Bears shoot 49.8 percent from the field and 40.4% from three point range and 69.2% from the charity strike.

Look for Head Coach Michele Durand to start 5'2" senior guard Jenny Markle, 5'4" junior point guard Emily Culbertson, 5'10" center Erin Brand, 5'6" Senior Leah Zimmerman and 5'8" senior Megan Cevasco. Brand leads the team in scoring with 13.3 ppg., grabs 4.8 rpg. and shoots 60.9% from the floor (39-of-64). Markle averages 10.7 ppg. and leads the team with 17 steals and 16 three-pointers. Zimmerman scores 8.0 ppg. and grabs 3.8 rpg Cevasco averages 5.7 ppg. and leads the team in rebounds with 5.2 rpg. and assists with 23. Culbertson averages 5.2 ppg.

Off the bench, look for Durand to utilize 5'4" junior guard Alisha Rinehart and 5'8" junior forward Tricia Fuller. Also look for 5'10" senior center Tara Butler and 5'10"sophomore forward Brittany Bogart. Rinehart is second on the team in scoring with 12.2 ppg. and shoots 82.8% from the foul line (24-of-29). Fuller averages 4.5 ppg., Butler 4.2 ppg. and Bogart 2.5 ppg.

In Ohio Northern's Last Game Against Heidelberg College in Ada: ONU -- 66, Heidelberg-- 39 -- In Ohio Northern's last game, a 66-39 victory against Heidelberg College in Ada, Erin Brand led the Polar Bears in scoring with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. In addition, Leah Zimmerman scored 12 points and collected a team-high seven rebounds.
