Mount Union Women Upset B-W, 65-61, in Berea in a First OAC Tourney Game

BEREA, OHIO — Junior center Alicia Williams scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the sixth-seeded Mount Union College women's basketball team upset third-seeded Baldwin-WallaceCollege, 65-61, tonight (Tuesday, February 20, 2007) in a first round Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The win ended a nine-game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets.

With its win, Mt. Union improves to 14-12 overall and advances to an OAC semifinal game on Thursday, Feb. 22 against second-seed Capital University in Columbus at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets end the season at 19-7 overall and one game shy of their 11th straight 20-win season.

In addition to Williams for Mt. Union, senior guard Lauren Friedrich scored 11 points. B-W was led by junior forward Carly Flowers' (North Baltimore) 16 points.

In the first half, Mt. Union broke from a 4-4 tie to outscored the Yellow Jackets 21-12 to take its first of three nine-point leads with 10:14 left before the intermission when Williams scored off of a missed shot.  The last of the three nine-point leads came with 41.6 seconds left when Williams again rebounded a missed shot and scored. Mt. Union also led at halftime, 39-30.

In the second half, Mt. Union gained its largest advantage of 11 points at the 19:09 mark when Williams scored on a layup for a 41-30 lead. B-W then outscored the Purple Raiders 31-20 to finally tie the score at 61-61 with 2:11 left when sophomore guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) made a jump shot in the lane. The Raiders regained the lead at 63-61 with 58.72 seconds left when Williams made a jumper. A pair of Friedrich free throws with 17.53 seconds sealed the win.

The winner of the Mount Union versus Capital game on Thursday advances to Saturday's OAC Championship Game at 3:00 p.m. The winner of the OAC Tournament receives the OAC's automatic berth in the 2007 NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins next week.

The third-seeded Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will host Ohio Athletic Conference rival and sixthseeded Mount Union College on Tuesday, February 20, 2007 in the first round of the OAC Tournament at 7:30 p.m. in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.. The winner advances to the semifinal round on Thursday, February, 22 and face the winner of the second-seeded Capital University versus John Carroll University game at the site of the highest remaining seeded team at 7:30 p.m.

Union, on December 6, 2006 in the Timken PE Building in Alliance, B-W defeated Mt. Union, 77-52. Leading the way to victory for B-W was 5'8" junior forward Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) with 15 points, 5'10" junior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore) with 14 points and nine rebounds and senior Academic All-OAC guard Steffani Jaworski (Parma/ Holy Name) came off the bench to score 10 points. No Mt. Union player scored in double figures. B-W led by 20 points at halftime, 38-18, and cruised to the win.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- Look for Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer to count on veteran players to lead the Yellow Jackets. Overall, Harrer goes deep on her bench with a 12-player rotation all seeing double-digit minutes on the floor. Amanda Mondrach is expected to start at a wing position with 5'9" senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Michelle White (Hudson). On the inside, look for 5'8" junior forward Jessica Lattimer (Brooklyn) and Stacia Shrider to start. Sophomore 5'6" point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Holy Name) will run the offense. Mondrach, an All-OAC player and 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, averages 9.5 ppg. and has 36 assists and 20 steals. White scores 7.4 ppg., grabs 3.8 rpg., shoots 49 percent from the floor (68-of-140)) and second on team with 25 blocked shots. Latimer scores 6.8 ppg., pulls down 4.9 rpg. and shoots 52 percent from the floor (56-of-107). Shrider scores 6.1 ppg., leads the team with 6.2 rpg. and has 38 assists and 32 steals. Quiring averages 4.9 ppg., is first the team with 60 assists and has 23 steals.

Off the bench, look for Carly Flowers, 5'5" freshman point guard Sandra Busser (Parma/ Padua), Steffani Jaworski, 5'8" sophomore guard Leah Mottayaw (Mansfield/ Madison), 6'2" freshman post Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and 5'6" sophomore guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville) all to see action. Jaworski averages 3.8 ppg. and is third with 16 three-pointers. Flowers leads the team in scoring with 11.0 points per game, has a team-leading 50 steals, grabs 4.9 rebounds per game and shoots 54 percent from the floor ((116-of-217). Mottayaw scores 4.5 ppg. and is second on the squad with 20 three-pointers. Busser scores 2.5 ppg. Junior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood via Miami of Florida), who averaged 9.0 ppg., 3.2 rpg. and had 35 steals in 20 games, is out for the season with an injury. Butzer has played in 20games and is scoring 5.8 ppg. and has 37 assists. Brough scores 3.6 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and leads the team with 29 blocked shots.

Scouting the Pruple Raiders of Mount Union College -- Look for Head Coach Suzy Venet to start 5'6" junior point guard Ellie Geiger, 5'4" freshman point guard Haley Drayer, senior guard/forward Lauren Friedrich, and 6'1" junior center Alicia Williams and 5'9'' junior forward Ashley Ross in the post. Williams lead the team in scoring with 14.2 ppg. and grabs 8.3 rpg. She also leads the team in blocked shots with 21. Friedrich is second in scoring with 11.1 ppg. and grabs 1.9 rpg. and leads the team with 34 three-pointers. Drayer averages 8.7 ppg. and shoots 94 percent from the freethrow line (32-of-34 attempts). Ross scores 5.0 ppg. and second on the team in rebounding with 6.4 rpg. and has 33 steals and 17 blocks. Geiger scores 3.2 ppg. and has team leading 53 assists.

Off the bench, look for Venet use 5'6" freshman guard MeghanSimons, 5'5'' junior point guard Dana Gerenyi, 5'6'' senior guard/forward Caitlin Carroll, 5'8'' freshman guard Brielle Sautter, and 5'1'' sophomore center Steph Schwartz. Simons lead the scoring off the bench with 6.9 ppg. and grabs 3.9 rpg. Gerenyi ties the team in assists with 48 and scores 2.2 ppg.

In B-W's Last Game versus Marietta on February 17 in Berea, Ohio: Baldwin-Wallace -- 84--, Marietta -- 39-- In B-W's last game, a 84-39 victory against Marietta College on Saturday in Berea, Carly Flowers and Leah Mottayaw led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points each. Mottayaw's 15 set a career-high. Jessica Lattimer added 12 points and six rebounds. Keys to the victory for B-W were shooting 53.8 percent from the floor on 35-of-65 field goal attempts and outscoring Marietta in the paint, 42-12; forcing 24 Pioneer turnovers and converting the turnovers into 28 points; and outrebounding MC, 40-33.

In Mount Union's Last Game versus Ohio Northern University on February 17 in Alliance, Ohio: Mount Union -- 69--, ONU -- 61-- In Mount Union's last game, a 69-61 victory versus Ohio Northern University on Saturday in Alliance, the Purple Raiders were led in scoring by Alicia Williams with 16 points and six rebounds. In addition, Haley Drayer added 14 points and eight rebounds and Lauren Friedrich had 13 points. Keys in the win were outscoring ONU at the foul line, 20-13; outrebounding ONU, 44-32, and having 13 assists in 22 baskets scored.

Current National Rankings -- B-W was ranked 23rd in the Feb. 13 WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Division III poll and listed among the "Others Receiving Votes" in the d3hoops.com poll.

Previous Yellow Jacket OAC Tournament Success -- The Yellow Jacket women's basketball team has won four of the past eight OAC Tournament titles, including two years ago in 2005.

Michelle White Need Four More Blocked Shots to Set a Career Record -- Michelle White currently stands second all-time with 67 blocked shots. Jen Stepp (1992-94) is the all-time leader with 70. White also is 10th all-time with 133 steals. She also has scored 833 career points, grabbed 431 rebounds, passed for 118 assists and made 38 three-pointers.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 348 victories. Harrer is 348-125 in her career with a .740 winning percentage and is in her 17th season at B-W.
