21st-Ranked Baldwin-Wallace College Women Beat Mount Union, 65-47, in Berea to Improve to 16-2

BEREA, OHIO  Sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/Highland) scored a career-high 13 points tonight (Wednesday, January 30, 2008) as the 21st-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College women’s basketball team defeated Mount Union College, 65-47, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its victory, B-W is 16-2 overall and 9-2 in the OAC and set up its showdown for first place on Saturday at Ohio Northern University. With its loss, Mt. Union is now 7-11 overall and 4-7 in the OAC.

In the first half, B-W opened the game on a 9-3 run capped by a three pointer by freshman guard Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) at the 15:01 mark.  Mount Union responded with a 6-1 run to cut the Yellow Jacket lead to one point when sophomore guard Haley Drayer made two foul shots to make the score 10-9 with 12:25 left in the half.  B-W then would go on a 21-9 run to take a 13 point lead when sophomore center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) made two foul shots to give the Yellow Jackets a 31-18 advantage with 2:12 left in the half.  Mount Union then cut the lead to 11 points on a jumper from senior center Alicia Williams at the 1:35 mark, but Brough would again extend the Yellow Jacket lead to 13 points when she made a jumper at the 1:16 mark to give B-W a 33-20 mark.  Neither team would score over the final 1:16 and the Yellow Jackets led 33-20 at halftime.

In the second half, B-W came out of the locker room and went on a 20-4 run to lead 50-24 with 8:59 left in the half when sophomore forward Farage made layup.  Mount Union would then use an 18-9 run to cut the lead to 17 points when junior forward Steph Schwartz made one of two foul shots to make the score 59-42 with 2:57 left in the game.  Down the stretch both teams exchanged baskets and they Yellow Jackets went on to the 65-47 win.

In addition to Farage, junior guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights Holy Name) finished in double figures with 10 points.  Williams led the Purple Raiders with 14 points.

The B-W women travel to Ada to play ONU for first place. Game time is 3:00 p.m. at the ONU Sports Center. B-W defeated ONU in the first meeting this season, 79-52, in Berea on December 8. 2007.

Game Notes #18 HOST Mount Union College

The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea at 7:30 p.m. This is the 11th overall and second of two OAC regular season games against the Purple Raiders.

               

 RADIO -- All Yellow Jacket women's basketball games, home and away, are broadcast by campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via the WBWC Internet Web site at www.wbwc.com. The Pregame Setup -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team will look to win its third straight Ohio Athletic Conference game when it hosts arch-rival Mount Union College.

The Yellow Jackets enter the game with a 15-2 overall and 8-2 OAC record following a 58-40 win versus Capital University on Saturday, January 26 in Columbus. B-W has won 10-of-its-last-11 games and is currently in second place in the OAC and one game back on league-leader Ohio Northern University.

The Purple Raiders enter the game with a 7-10 overall and 4-6 OAC record following a 71-54 win against Muskingum College on Jan. 26 in Alliance. Mt. Union has won two of its last three games.

The B-W Versus Mount All-Time Series -- B-W and Mount Union have previously met 67 times in women's basketball with the Yellow Jackets leading the all-time series, 34-33, including a 58-39 victory in the first meeting this season, on December 5, 2007 in Alliance. B-W has won 10 of the last 11 meetings. The last Mt. Union win came last February 20, 2007 in Berea in the OAC Tournament when the Raiders won by the score of 65-61. The first time B-W and Mt. Union met was in 1964-1965 and B-W won, 39-36.

In This Season's First B-W versus Mount Union Game on December 5, 2007 in Alliance: Baldwin-Wallace -- 58, Mount Union -- 39 -- In the first regular season meeting between B-W and Mt. Union this season, on December 5, 2007 in the Timken Physical Education Building in Alliance, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Purple Raiders, 58-39. Leading the way to victory for B-W was 5'9" senior guard Selena Eskinazi-Budge (Beachwood) with a game-high 15 points on six-of-12 shooting from the field and she grabbed four rebounds. In addition, 5'8" junior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma/ Parma Heights Holy Name) had eight points and a game-high eight rebounds. Keys to the Yellow Jacket win were committing just 10 turnovers, forcing Mt. Union into making 19 miscues, forcing the Purple Raiders to shoot just 34.9 percent from the floor and outrebounding them, 38-29. Despite the loss, senior 5'9" guard Ashley Ross led Mt. Union with 10 points.

B-W Information and Probable Starters -- As a team, B-W scores 70.3 points per game and allows 56.2 ppg. to its opponents for a plus 14.1 ppg. differential. The Yellow Jackets grab 41.2 rpg. and allow 35.9 rpg. for a plus 5.3 differential. B-W shoots 42.9% from the field (447-of-1041), including 33.7% from three point range (68-of-202), and makes 66.8% of its foul shots (233-of-349).

Look for Head Coach Cheri Harrer to play at least 12 student-athletes in this game. She will start Amanda Mondrach and 5'6" junior Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Hts. Holy Name) in the backcourt along with Selena Eskinazi-Budge. On the inside, look for 5' 8" senior Stacia Shrider (Marietta/ Warren Local) to start at forward and for 6' 2" sophomore Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) to start at center. To date, Eskinazi-Budge scores a team-best 11.1 ppg., grabs 4.4 rpg. and leads the team in steals with 33, is second with 17 blocked shots and third with 29 assists. Mondrach, the 2005-2006 OAC Freshman of the Year, is second in scoring and tallies 8.3 ppg., grabs 3.4 rpg., has canned a team-high 18 three-pointers and is second with 30 assists. Brough scores 7.8 ppg., is second with 4.9 rpg. and tops the team with 28 blocked shots. Quiring scores 7.6 ppg., leads the team in assists with 36, is third with 11 triples and shoots 79% (22-of-28) from the charity stripe. Shrider rounds out the starting five by scoring 5.1 ppg. and topping the team with 7.2 rpg.

Off the bench, look for Harrer to use 5' 10" senior forward Carly Flowers (North Baltimore), 5' 10" sophomore transfer forward Sasha Samara (Amherst/ Steele), 5'10" sophomore forward Serena Farage (Medina/ Buckeye), 5'11 freshman forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove), 5' 7" freshman guards and twin sisters Carrie and Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) and 5'5" junior point guard Jessica Butzer (Orrville). Flowers adds 6.9 ppg. and 4.5 rpg. and has 19 steals. Courtney Ritzler scores 6.1 ppg., grabs 2.4 rpg. and is second on the squad with 16 threepointers and 23 steals. Schroeder scores 6.8 ppg. and has 10 three-pointers.

In B-W's Last Game: versus Capital University on Jan. 19 in Columbus: Baldwin-Wallace -- 58, Capital -- 40-- In B-W's last game, a 58-40 victory against OAC arch-rival Capital University on January 26 in Columbus, Stacia Shrider led the Yellow Jackets by scoring a game-high 12 points and grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Amanda Schroeder also scored 10 points and made a key three-pointer late in the game to squash a Capital rally. The victory marked B-W's 19th in the last 26 meetings with the Crusaders and avenged an overtime loss to Capital earlier this season. B-W held Capital to 21.3% shooting from the floor, including 0-of-15 from 3-point range.

Scouting the Mount Union Purple Raiders -- Look for Head Coach Suzy Venet to start 5'6" senior Ellie Geiger, 5'4" sophomore Haley Drayer and 5'7" sophomore Tessa Pohovey in thed backcourt and for 5'9" senior forward Ashley Ross and 6'1" senior center Alicia Williams to start on the inside. Williams tops the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg., is second in rebounding at 7.6 rpg. and first with 16 blocked shots. Drayer is second in scoring at 10.1 ppg., grabs 2.7 rpg. and has 26 assists and has canned 14 three-pointers. Pohovey is third in scoring at 8.3 ppg. and has 28 assists, 15 triples and 12 steals. Ross scores 6.0 ppg. and leads the team with 8.6 rpg. Geiger scores 4.4 ppg. and tops the team with 32 assists and 18 steals.

Off the bench, look for Coach Venet to play 5'3" freshman guard Krista Johnson, 5'8" sophomore guard Brielle Sautter, 5'5" freshman guard Katie Crider, 5'10 freshman forward Lauren Forqquer , 5'11" junior forward Steph Schwartz, 5'4" sophomore guard Tiffany Oster, 5'8" freshman forward Nicole Plant and 5'7" freshman guard Taylor Hartung. Crider has the top scoring average off the bench at 6.9 ppg. and she has connected on a team-leading 21 threepointers.

In Mount Union's Last Game: versus Muskingum College on Han. 19 in Alliance: Mount Union -- 71, Muskingum -- 54 -- In Mount Union's last game, a 71-54 victory against Muskingum College on January 19 in the Timken PE Building in Alliance, the Purple Raiders were led by Haley Drayer with 20 points, including three three-pointers. She was joined in double-figure scoring by Tessa Pohovey with 13 points and Alicia Williams with 11 points and five rebounds. Steph Schwartz and Lauren Forquer both came off the bench to combine for 15 rebounds, including a teamhigh eight by Schwartz.

Cheri Harrer is the Winningest Women's Coach in B-W History -- Yellow Jacket veteran Head Coach Cheri Harrer is the winningest women's basketball coach in B-W history with 362 victories. Harrer is 362-128 in her career and the second winningest active coach in the OAC.

National Rankings Come Out on Tuesday's -- Both weekly Division III national polls, the WBCA/ USA Today (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) and d3hoops.com (the www.d3hoops.com Internet Web site), are usually released by Tuesday afternoon.
